_ August 13 th, 2013 Tuesday Visits to historic house museums in Meeting place: Cidade das Artes, at 8.00 a.m. Transport provided by the organizers 09.00 a.m. Maré Museum (Avenida Guiherme Maxwell, 26 Maré) The Maré Museum is located in the Maré Complex, a cluster of favelas and housing in Rio de Janeiro. Its main purpose is to register, preserve and divulge the history of the Maré communities, showing its cultural, social and economic aspects. The museum originated from an experience initiated in 1989 after taking some images of the community and registering stories told by its dwellers. 11.00 a.m. Açude Museum (Estrada do Açude, 764 Alto da Boa Vista) Located in the Tijuca Forest, the Açude Museum is a place where the cultural and natural heritages are intertwined. The property was inherited by the family of the art collector and entrepreneur Castro Maya in 1913. After being renovated in 1920, it was transformed into a neocolonial residence. In the Portuguese inspired houses and gardens, tiles and chinaware from the Porto region stand out, as well as a rare collection of Chinese, Indian and Indochinese sculptures, chinaware of several origins, French crystal and Portuguese-Brazilian furniture. An outdoor permanent exhibition integrates contemporary art to the surrounding landscape. 01.00 p.m. Lunch provided by the organizers 02.00 p.m Chácara do Céu Museum (Rua Murtinho Nobre, 93 Santa Teresa) The name Chácara do Céu goes back to 1876. The house was inherited by the entrepreneur and collector Castro Maia around 1930. Renovated in 1954, it is renowned by its modern architectonic style and its privileged location. It holds Brazilian and European visual arts collections, especially works of art by modernist artists, from 19 th century travelers, maps from the 17th and 18th centuries belonging to the Brasiliana collection and a library comprising about 8000 titles. Along with the Açude Museum, it forms the Castro Maya Museums, whose collections reflect his refined look and the taste of an era. 03.30 p.m. Benjamin Constant Historic House Museum (Rua Monte Alegre, 255 Santa Teresa) The Benjamin Constant Historic House Museum shows the social-cultural context in which the founder of the Brazilian Republic lived, as well as his family environment. It is one of the most relevant collections of classical art that can be found in Brazilian museums, comprising over two thousand works of art from Ancient Egypt to Impressionism. The historic house museum, located in the residence where Eva Klabin lived for over 30 years, is open to the public and shows paintings, sculptures, furniture objects of decorative art. and 11.00 a.m. Presentation of the Breathing Project by Marcio Doctors, Curator of the Eva Klabin Foundation. Created in 2004, the Breathing Project aims creating interventions of contemporary art to in the collection of classical art from Eva Klabin Foundation. It was opened as a house museum in 1930. The neoclassical style house is situated in the middle of a huge garden. Rio Branco, 241 Centro The Justiça Federal Cultural Center was opened in 2001 in the building that previously housed the Supreme Court of Justice. Designed by Adolpho Morales de Los Rios, an architect from Seville, Spain, it is one of the most outstanding examples of the eclectic architecture that was the trend in Brazil at the beginning of the 20 th century. It has thirteen rooms for exhibitions, a theater, a library, a cinema and a cafeteria. The internal staircase is lighted by a stained glass window produced by Formenti. The National Museum, from Federal University, is the oldest scientific institution in Brazil (1818) and the biggest museum of natural and anthropological history in Latin America.
