The University Oxford is home to a world famous University of Oxford, and most of the colleges and university buildings are located in the centre of Oxford, within easy walking distance of each other. The centre of Oxford is dominated by the University colleges, the most famous being Christ Church, Trinity, and Balliol, and along with a plethora of world famous sites and attractions is a magnet for over 9 million visitors each year. Welcome to Christ Church Christ Church is one of the colleges of Oxford University and sits in the heart of the city. Founded in 1546, today it is a key part of a very modern university, offering a home, undergraduate teaching and graduate supervision to over six hundred students. Its academic staff cover almost all subjects taught at Oxford. It stands out for its size, the beauty of its buildings, and its welcoming atmosphere, as well as the distinguished research and teaching that goes on within its walls. It is unique in another way too: it is a cathedral as well as a college. 17

The castle in Oxford has been brought to life at Oxford Castle & Prison. Visitors can enjoy a guided tour and meet past inhabitants of Oxford Castle and discover their true stories as you; Climb the Saxon St George s Tower, Oxford s oldest building, and enjoy its stunning 360 view Descend deep underground into the dark atmosphere of the 900- year-old Crypt Explore the austere confines of the 18th-century Debtors Tower and Prison D-Wing Scale the Mound of the 11th-century motte-and-bailey castle! 18

LET S GO TO GREENWICH! What is the name of this very famous boat?... What does this device show?...... Is the longitude of Velaux : o at 5.253 east or o at 5.253 west? Tick the right answer. What is this strange object? Who made it? When? Who was it for? Who needed such a device? 19

Oxford and Cambridge = Oxbridge are not only the UK s most famous universities, and two of its highest ranking they re also different to other institutions in a number of key ways. The first key Oxbridge element is the college system. Oxford and Cambridge are each made up of colleges more than 40 at Oxford, more than 30 at Cambridge and prospective students usually choose a particular college to apply to. What is an Oxbridge college? It s basically a collection of buildings, often historic and attractive, which form a small self-enclosed community. Within each college complex you ll find student accommodation, common rooms, cafes and bars, library and computer facilities (often open 24/7), and offices for staff members. Welcome to Trinity College, University of Cambridge. Trinity was founded by Henry VIII in 1546, when he combined two existing colleges (King s Hall and Michaelhouse) and seven hostels (Catherine s, Garratt, Gregory s, Ovyng s, Physwick, St Margaret s, and Tyler s). Since then Trinity has flourished and grown, and is now a home to around 600 undergraduates, 300 graduates, and over 180 Fellows. Trinity exists to give its members a rewarding, richly resourced, and intellectually inspiring place in which to pursue their education and research. Princes, spies, poets and prime-ministers have all been taught here, and members of the College go on to a very wide range of professions and careers after taking degrees in all the subjects the University offers. Would you like to study in Oxbridge? Explain why or why not:............ 20

The Sedgwick Museum of Earth Sciences is the oldest of the University of Cambridge museums, having been established in 1728 as the Woodwardian Museum. Since then the collection has grown from about 10,000 fossils, minerals and rocks, to at least 2 million. A walk through the museum will take you on a 4.5 billion year journey through time, from the meteoritic building blocks of planets, to the thousands of fossils of animals and plants that illustrate the evolution of life in the oceans, on land and in the air. Also a major teaching and research resource in the Department of Earth Sciences, the Sedgwick Museum collections are a national treasure. Let's Go Punting! and of that boat?... What is the name of this bridge?... 21
