Public Housing Hawaii Public Housing Authority (HPHA) Oahu Applications, 1002 North School St (P.O. Box 17907), Honolulu, HI 96817 Ph# (808) 832-5960 / TTY (808) 832-6083 Oahu Applications Office Hours: 8:15AM 12:15PM, 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM Monday through Friday (Closed Holidays) Applying for and moving into public housing can take anywhere from six months to six years. All applicants are screened for eligibility based on income and assets. In order for an application to be fast-tracked the applicant needs to meet certain preferences designated by the Hawaii Public Housing Authority. ORDER OF PRIORITY AND PREFERENCES*: 1) Victim of domestic violence, homeless residing in a transitional shelter with a social service plan, and/or involuntary displacement. 2) Living in substandard housing and/or paying more than 50% of family income towards rent and utilities. 3) Veterans and veteran s surviving spouse, resident who live and/or work in county, victims of reprisal or hate crimes, and/or working families and those unable to work because of age or disability. *These preferences are subject to change. Contact HPHA for updated information. The application process involves the following steps: 1) Get an application from HPHA by calling 832-5960 or stopping by their office located on 1002 North School Street. 2) You will need to provide information regarding you and your household s current housing need, previous housing, income, assets, birth dates, marriage dates, divorce dates, military service dates, social security numbers, and criminal background check. 3) Turn in your application by mail or in person at the address on the top of this page. HPHA considers this stage pre-application. The preapplication stage determines preliminary eligibility. This means HPHA places qualified applications on the waitlist in order of the date and time of your application and preference based on the information you provide. 4) HPHA will send you written notification through first class mail whether you have been put on the waitlist or not. 5) When an applicant on the waitlist nears the top of the list, HPHA will send a letter. The letter will request an interview with the applicant, including all adult household members, and verification of certain items, like preference, family composition, income, assets, citizenship, social security numbers, criminal history report, etc. HPHA will deny your application if you fail to attend the interview. 6) After verification, or the full application, HPHA will send you a letter of final determination and notice of eligibility. 7) Applicants must notify HPHA of any changes to their application (e.g. changes in income, family compositions, or address). Applicants must also confirm their address at least annually. 8) You must accept the unit offered within three (3) business days of the offer, unless there is a good cause. If HPHA contacts you by telephone about the offer, they will also confirm the offer in writing as well. Section 8 Housing Voucher Program Currently, the Section 8 Housing Voucher Program is not accepting new applications because of the large number of individuals and families still on the waiting list. Hawaii Public Housing Authority will announce and advertise when the Program will start accepting new applicants and the application s eligibility requirements. BUT CHECK OUT Page 2 of 11
State Rent Supplement Program Hawaii Public Housing Authority 1002 North School Street, Honolulu, HI 96817 Ph.: 832-6040 TTY: 832-6083 The Rent Supplement Program is state-funded and supplements rent up to $160 for eligible individuals and families. Each individual and family is expected to pay at least 30% of their adjusted gross income for rent. The supplement helps pay the difference between that amount and the actual amount for the rental unit. Call 832-6040 to request an application. You must meet the following requirements in order to qualify: 1) Must be renting a proper size unit for family size; 2) Must provide reasonable assurance that you can pay rent on time; 3) Must not have any outstanding debts owed to the Hawaii Public Housing Authority (formerly known as Housing & Community Development Corporation of Hawaii or Hawaii Housing Authority); 4) Must be a resident of the State of Hawaii; 5) Must not own or have majority interest in a dwelling unit on the same island on which you are seeking Rent Supplement assistance; and 6) Must be within the following income and asset limits: Income Limits Number of persons 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 $24,950 28,500 32,100 35,650 38,500 41,350 44,200 47,050 Asset Limits Numer of persons 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 Non-elderly families $37,425 42,750 48,150 53,475 57,750 62,025 66,300 70,575 families $49,900 57,000 64,200 71,300 77,000 82,700 88,400 94,100 Subsidized Apartments This list is divided into sections by the name of the Property Management Company (e.g. Bob Tanaka, INC., Cambridge Management, etc.). Some managing companies prefer that you apply at the head office; others prefer that you apply for housing at the building itself. Before you apply, you may want to call the buildings you are interested in to see if there are any rental units available. If there are units available, ask what you need to do to apply for the unit. NOTE: Changes are continuously occurring in this list. It is a good idea to check with the property manager to see if the buildings fall under Section 8, Section 236, or Section 221.
