P A G E 4 President s Message Staying Current I find that the various Land Surveying publications are a valuable tool for staying involved. I have been retired from active surveying for more than a year now. As such I find it challenging to write an informative message for you the Focal Point reader. So let me share with you what has helped me to stay a bit more connected and current to the land surveying profession. In addition to staying active within the Sacramento Chapter I find that the various Land Surveying publications are a valuable tool for staying involved. My standard reading starts with the quarterly California Surveyor edited by our own John Wilusz, PLS, PE. The current issue has an interview with David Goodman, PLS, PE, regaling surveys David performed in Egypt; an article titled Evidence of Occupation by Chuck Karayan, PLS; a creative crossword puzzle by Ian Wilson, PLS, and more. My reading continues with The American Surveyor the recent issue Vol. 10 Issue 2 contains several thoughtful and intriguing Feature articles i.e.: Where is Chena, The Surveyor and the Tree, and Einstein on Surveying ; also the Departments section includes The Curt Brown Chronicles & Angle Points: Who are you by Michael Pallamary, PLS, plus Footsteps: Limitations and Benefits of Court Case Review by Landon Blake, PS. Two other magazines that I routinely read are Professional Surveyor and P.O.B. (point of beginning), each offering very relevant Land Surveying articles. FME (for my edification) the Focal Point newsletter should go with out saying. Worth noting is that many of the published authors named above have been feature speakers at our Sacramento Chapter s monthly dinner meetings, and many are active Sacramento Chapter members. Tailgate reminder: We all know that it is important to stay hydrated during the hot summer months; however it is just as important to drink plenty of fluids during the cool days when one doesn t feel as thirsty. I hope to see a substantial turnout at the next Chapter meeting on March 7th. Paul Carlson, President. F O C A L P O I N T

M A R C H 2 0 1 3 P A G E 7 Engineers (& Surveyors ) Day at the Mall Engineers Week Feb 17-23, 2013 Once again, members of the Sacramento CLSA Chapter participated in the Sacramento ASCE Engineers Day at the Mall event celebrating 2013 Engineers Week. Various branches of Engineering were represeted, including Civil, Structural, Electrical, Chemical, Mechanical, Robotics, and of course Geomatics. This year the crowds were amazed at the display of early 20th Century Land Surveying technology in the form of a Wild T-1A. If you can top that, perhaps next year you would like to participate in this great outreach and marketing opportunity. To participate next year, please contact: Joyce Copelan (530)-908-8372 cell jcopelan95694@yahoo.com Bits and Bites The CLSA Monument Conservation Committee is pleased to announce that their web page is up and running. There is a link on the CLSA home page, in the middle of the disk on the right. Or use: http://www.californiasurveyors.org/ index.asp This information is valuable for contractors and the public as well as surveyors. **************************** Congratulations to the UC Fresno Student Team on winning this year s National Student Competition, which was held in Salt Lake City, Utah. ****************************** NCEES is looking for surveyors who passed the NCEES exam after 2003 and obtained a PLS to participate in exam development.
