All but one are Members of CICIND. Below is a short CV and a photo of each author in the sequence they appear in this book. Malcolm Pratt Over the last 30 years with Entec. Malcolm has conducted and led a large number of air quality and environmental impact assessment projects some of which required the determination of chimney heights. He has provided air quality evidence at a number of major public inquiries concerned with incinerators and airports. Klaus K. Kaemmer is a German citizen. He studied mathematics and physics and earned a doctorate in applied mathematics. In 1972 he joined KARRENA where he worked closely together with Dr. Bottenbruch, the first President of CICIND. He joined CICIND already in 1976. He presented papers at the CICIND Conferences in Edinburgh, Munich and Brighton He was involved in major chimney contracts such as a 360 m chimney and many chimneys in the Middle East, South Africa and Asia. In all cases he was responsible for the contract handling and the construction work. He was appointed the Secretary of CICIND on 1 st of May 2004. John Turner is the UK s foremost independent expert on the design, performance and maintenance of industrial chimneys and natural draught cooling towers. A highly qualified, independent consulting engineer with over 25 years experience in his specialist areas, his clients include oil, power and industrial companies in the UK and elsewhere. Henk van Koten from Netherlands is member of CICIND since the beginning in 1973. After his studies in mathematics and civil engineering he worked for a few years as contractor and in an engineering office. Afterwards he moved to a Dutch Research Institute. He gave lessons in applied mechanics at the Technological University of The Hague during many years and was active as consultant in the Chimney field. Presently he is technical director of Flow-Engineering a Dutch company specialized in the design and fabrication of damping structures. John Wilson is a Professor of Civil Engineering at Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne. Prior to this appointment he worked as a senior academic at the University of Melbourne for some 14 years and as a consulting engineer for over 10 years with the SECV and Arups in their London and Melbourne offices. He has a Bachelor of Engineering degree from Monash University, a Master of Science degree from University of California (Berkeley) and a PhD from University of Melbourne. He has a research interest and expertise in structural systems, earthquake engineering, structural dynamics and sustainable structures and has consulted widely in these fields. He has designed a number of tall reinforced concrete chimneys and has carried out extensive research into the earthquake behaviour of such structures using both analytical and experimental techniques. Mario Poli is Italian citizen from Venice. He went through all the stages of a CICIND member: Guest, Member, delegate in the Brick Lining Committee, Chairman of the Thermodynamic Design Committee and finally President of CICIND from 1995 to 1997. In September 1993 he organized the famous CICIND Meeting in Florence which was one of CICIND s social highlights. Mario has impressed the CICIND Members with his high technical skills, his friendly attitude and his strong interest in promoting CICIND. 14

Roger Bierrum Piotr Noakowski joined CICIND in 1980, became the President from 1997 to 2001. He graduated first in Mathematics and then in Engineering at Oxford University. Since his time he has been involved in the design, construction or repair of major structures on almost every power station and oil refinery in the British Isles. He was a member of BS 4485 Committee Structural design of cooling towers, the CICIND Steel Liner Committee, and the CICIND Concrete Chimney Committee. Since his retirement in 1997 he serves as a Consultant to Bierrum International Ltd. graduated from the Warsaw Polytechnic in Civil Engineering and continued his education at the Technical University of Munich. His involvement with chimneys and CICIND started in 1981. Since then he has been engaged in the design of concrete stacks. Since 1989 he is director of FaAA in Düsseldorf, Germany, an expert office on industrial structures. Since this time he teaches at the Dortmund University the subject "Nonlinear Statics of R/C Structures". Apart from his work with CICIND he is active member in several international committees on structural design. Giovanni Di Poi born in 1959, is Italian and has been a member of CICIND since 1992 becoming elected to the Governing Body in 1999 and newly elected in 2003.
