The book deals with the architectural styles of Karnataka and makes a particular reference to the Dravida Style of construction of temples during the Vijayanagara period and cites examples of the temples found at Hampi. This small, well illustrated volume is one of a series, edited by the noted art historian Dr. Devanagana Desai, of monographs on heritage sites in India. Each volume in the series is a unit by itself and is written by a specialist on the site. This volume presents Vijayanagara to the general reader and visitor to the site. It traces the foundation myths and the history of the site and discusses its location within a wider historical and geographical setting. Specialized information is provided on the site, its architectural and sculptural details and its uniqueness. Anna L. The Ramachandra temple is one of the most important religious monuments in the royal centre at Hampi. It is aligned with features in the landscape in which the city of Vijayanagara is laid out. The illustrated volume provides the Ramachandra temple with a complete description of its architecture, sculpture and inscriptions within an appropriate historical and archaeological and mythical context. The book has contributions by John M.Fritz on Urban context, History and architecture by George Michell, Sculpture by Anna L.Dallapiccola and inscriptions by S.Rajashkeara. Anna.L. The book deals with the architectural aspects of the temple cars or chariots (rathas), while describing the origin and importance of such temple cars it mentions about the stone chariot found at Vitthala temple built in the Dravida style of architecture. The photographs of some of the monuments are very well recorded. The detail documentation of Hampi can be seen in this book. This monograph provides the details of courtly monuments of Vijayanagara and it also comprises the description, analysis and interpretations. An attempt is made to document all the courtly structures of Vijayanagar. In the introduction there are historical and archaeological background for the courtly buildings. Then the stylistic analysis and possible functional attribution and the descriptions of Islamic monuments are given. In the end there is a glossary of architectural terms, bibliography, plans and photographs. Greenlaw in 1856, and again in 1983 by Gollings. The variations in the monuments in the span of 127 years are well recorded. Like the English version this has photographs and maps.
