Andrew Jackson and fought in the "Battle of New Orleans" Samuel Eagleton McSpadden 1791-1874 married (2) Mrs. Mary Gannt Reynolds; married (3) Charlotte Cunningham, who is listed as his wife in the 1850 census of Monroe Co.,TN. No issue by marr. 2 or 3. Notes for Mary Gannt: [Mcspged.FTW] To be investigated: Is her middle name a "maiden" name and she was previously married to a Reynolds, vice versa, or was she "given" her mother's maiden name? Notes for Mary Anne Lowrey: [Mcspged.FTW] There is a strong probability as indicated by records in the book "Tennessee Cousins" by Worth S. Ray and other family records, that Mary Anne (Polly) Lowrey was the daughter of George Lowrey, one of the Cherokee Chieftains who signed the "Hiwassee Purchase" in Washington D.C. Feb 27, 1819 with Secretary of War John C. Calhoun, and was related to John Ross, a Scotsman who took over as chief of the Cherokees and was founder of "Ross' Ferry" TN (now known as Chattanooga, TN). Considering that their last child Amanda McSpadden was born about 1832 and family records show Mary's death to be 1832, it is very possible that Mary died from complications due to childbirth. Haw III In the early days of the Mexican War, James Walker McSpadden, 1818-1864, helped organize a company of soldiers and served as orderly sergeant in Captain Vaughn's Company of 5th Regiment Tennessee Volunteers. He left for Mexico in 1847, and served among other places, at Vera Cruz and San Juan. Soon after he returned, James moved from Tennessee to Lawrence County, Missouri, near Verona, whither his brother Thomas Alfred had moved in 1845. (He later moved to Greene County, Missouri.) At the outbreak of the Civil War, James enlisted in Richard Campbell's

They were in the battles of Dug Springs and Wilson Creek in Missouri and were a part of General Price's army. In 1862, James was made a captain. His company later moved to Arkansas, then to Mississippi (Iuka). They took part in the battle of Corinth, where James was wounded by grape shot, remained ill in Alabama (?) for some time, and then made his way to Williamson County, Texas to the homes of three first cousins: John Anderson and Thomas Addison McSpadden and their sister, Nancy, Mrs. Jeremiah Sterling. James' second wife, Susan, is buried in an unmarked grave 10 miles west of Springfield and a mile north of the McSpadden corner. *********************************************** PRICE RE-ORGANIZING HIS ARMY (Copied from Pictorial & Genealogical Record of Greene Co., MO - published 1893) It was General Price s intention to spend the winter in Springfield, being encouraged by the promise of re-enforcements from Arkansas under McCulloch and McIntosh and by the inactivity of the Union Army. Since the capture of Lexington, Price s army had become considerably reduced, now numbering about fifteen thousand, which was five thousand less than formerly. His ranks had been depletedby death, desertions, transfers and furloughs. When he had become comfortably settled at Springfield he began re-organizing his army. When the terms of enlistment of the Missouri State Guards expired they were induced to enterservice of the regular Confederate states. The original term of service ofthe State Guards was for six months and most of them having enlisted the middle of the preceding summer, their terms expired about the first of the year. The major portion of them were then enlisted in the regular Confederate Army for three years or until the close of the war. So the month of Januarywas spent in this work. Captain Campbell s Greene County Company promptly enlisted in the regular service about the middle of December, 1861, and it was one of the best companies in the Southern Army. It was first organized in May, 1861, under Governor Jackson s military bill for service in the Missouri State Guard, the first organization being effected at the head of Clear Creek, near Springfield. Leonidas St. Clair Campbell, who was always called Dick Campbell, was chosen captain; JAMES MCSPADDEN, first Lieutenant; Thomas Weaver, second lieutenant; Ben Hardin, third lieutenant; John A. Blanchard, orderly sergeant. The company numbered one hundred and twenty-five men. It was not well equipped for service in the field, being armed with double-barreled shotguns, navy revolvers and a few squirrel rifles. Soon after its organization the company left Greene County where the Union Home Guards were greatly in the majority and they disliked the idea of fighting neighbors, relativesand friends. In June it went into the southern part of Taney County on thearkansas line where it camped about two weeks, then went to join General Price on the Cowskin Prairie in McDonald County, and joining the army of Missourians marched with it to Cassville, then to Crane Creek, Dun Springs, and Wilson s Creek.
