About the Work À propos de l œuvre Folk-s is a performative and choreographic practice focusing on time. The work was born from the idea of ancient folk dances as popular phenomena that have survived contemporaneity. Schuhplattler is a typical Bavarian and Tyrolean dance meaning shoe batter and it literally consists in hitting one s shoes and legs with one s hands. In Folk-s, this dance is conceived and executed as a pre-existent and primitive form of thought. Dance as a rule, a dictatorship, a flux of images that follows the rhythm and the form, not the content. The form is rhythm, energy that is perceived through our ears, not the eyes, eyeless 1. Thus, for the performers of Folk-s, there is no other time than the present, a time that is not-past and notfuture. It s the infinite insistence of the tide against the sand, the endless return of the same wave to the same shore. It s sound. In the repetition, geographically and culturally decontextualized, the folk material finds its clearest revelation. This way, the folk and the popular, abstracted from their original sonic matrix, seem to wrestle each other until they fuse with the contemporary condition, perpetually fighting for their survival. The piece has been invited, among others, to Rencontres Chorégraphiques Internationales de Seine-Saint-Denis, Romaeuropa Festival, Festival d Automne à Paris, Festival Séquence Danse au Centquatre-Paris, Julidans Amsterdam, Folk-s est un exercice performatif et chorégraphique axé sur le temps. L œuvre s inspire de l idée de danses folkloriques anciennes considérées comme des phénomènes populaires qui ont survécu à la contemporanéité. Le Schuhplattler est une danse originaire de la Bavière et du Tyrol dans laquelle les danseurs frappent leurs chaussures et leurs jambes avec les mains. Dans Folk-s, cette danse est conçue et exécutée comme étant une forme primitive et préexistante de pensée. La danse impose la règle et donne lieu à un flux d images qui suivent le rythme et la forme plutôt que le contenu. La forme est le rythme, l énergie qui est perçue par l ouïe plutôt que par la vue, selon un mode de perception extra-oculaire 1. Ainsi, pour les interprètes de Folk-s, il n existe rien d autre que le temps présent, un temps qui n est ni le passé, ni le futur. C est le cycle infini de la vague qui revient lécher le sable, de la marée qui remonte inlassablement sur le même rivage. C est le son. Le matériau folklorique se révèle le plus clairement dans la répétition de gestes sortis de leur contexte géographique et culturel. Ainsi dépouillés de leur matrice sonore originelle, le folklorique et le populaire semblent s affronter jusqu à parvenir à une sorte de fusion contemporaine, luttant perpétuellement pour leur survie. Biography / Biographie ALESSANDRO SCIARRONI Creation and choreography Alessandro Sciarroni is an Italian performing artist with an extensive background in visual art and theatre. His works are featured in dance and theatre festivals, museums and art galleries, as well as in unconventional spaces. He starts from a conceptual Duchamp-like matrix, uses a theatrical framework, and can also incorporate techniques from other disciplines like circus or sports. Sciarroni s performances try to uncover obsessions, fears, and fragilities through the repetition of a practice at the limits of physical endurance. His works have been performed in 21 European countries, the United States, Canada, Brazil, Uruguay, and the United Arab Emirates. Among the main events he took part in: the Biennale de la Danse in Lyon, Kunstenfestivaldesarts in Brussels, Impulstanz Festival in Wien, the Venice Biennale, the Festival d Automne and the Festival Séquence Danse at Centquatre- Paris, Abu Dhabi Art Fair, Juli Dans Festival in Amsterdam. He exhibited his work at the Centre Pompidou in Paris and the MAXXI Museum in Rome. His works were presented within circuits and networks for the diffusion of contemporary dance and artists mobility such as Antibodies Explo, Aerowaves and Modul Dance, a multi-year cooperation project which involves 19 European Dance Houses from 15 different countries. Performing Gender (2014): a European project on gender and sexual orientation and Migrant Bodies (2014-2015): a research and choreography production project which aims to promote reflections and creations on the theme of migration and its cultural impact on the European and Canadian societies. Alessandro Sciarroni is supported by APAP - Advancing Performing Arts Projects - and his shows are produced by Marche Teatro in collaboration with international co-producers such as the Comune di Bassano del Grappa / Centro per la Scena Contemporanea, the Biennale de la Danse / Maison de la Danse de Lyon, the Mercat de les Flors-Graner / Barcelona, Centrale Fies and the Association Corpoceleste_C.C.00# of which he is artistic director. It is also one of the artists of the Project Matilde, regional platform for the new scene in Marche. Alessandro Sciarroni is an associate artist at le Centquatre-Paris. In September 2016 he created Turning_ Motion Sickness Version for the Ballet de l Opéra de Lyon at the 17 th Biennale de la Danse de Lyon. As an Italian artist, why choose this Bavarian folk dance rather than a traditional Italian one? ALESSANDRO SCIARRONI A. At the beginning it was just an intuition. Canadian songwriter Rufus Wainwright was wearing a Bavarian costume (lederhosen) on the back cover of his album Release the Stars. I thought there was a kind of contemporary vibration in that, I thought it was very elegant, it was very different from the image of the dance I had in my mind. Then, starting to work on the idea of making a possible project about that, I realized that the dance is still very alive, it is not something that is performed for tourists, and I really wanted to work on something like this, something that has been lasting in time. I would never choose an Italian dance. In this piece, Schuhplattler becomes a kind of archetypical movement; I created a monument around this dance. I would find it arrogant and egocentric on my part to choose to make a monument around my roots! It was more challenging and interesting for me to go to Tyrol, find a real folk dance company and ask for their blessing, ask for their permission to get into the practice. décidé d explorer cette tradition qui a traversé les siècles. This dance becomes a metaphor for tradition, for something that you have to take care of, if you want it to survive to contemporaneity, if you want it to last in time.
