Queen of Peace Heart of the School Awarded to Ms. Gardas Each year at the Queen of Peace Founders Day Mass a special award is given out to a dedicated faculty or staff member who consistently demonstrates the Dominican values each day in their interactions with parents, students, faculty and staff. This year Ms. Terry Gardas is the distinguished recipient. Ms. Gardas has been a staff member at Queen of Peace for 22 years. She has served the Peace community in many roles including library aide, attendance officer, the assistant in the Development department most recently as the administrative assistant to the Principal. Queen of Peace Principal Mr. Hedi Belkaoui and Ms. Gardas is often one of Ms. Gardas. the first people you will meet upon entering Queen of Peace. She is a constant support to students, parents, faculty and staff and is truly the embodiment of all things Peace. She has been described by her colleagues as the heart and soul of the day to day operations of the school. I would be lost without her, said Hedi Belkaoui, principal at Queen of Peace. Terry is the reason anything happens. Besides being an expert at organization, she has a quiet spirit, a steadfast commitment to the Dominican values and a continual willingness to help wherever needed. Ms. Gardas could not believe she was being honored when she heard her name announced as the recipient of this year s award. She has loved working at Peace and said without a doubt my favorite part of Peace is getting to know the students. Winning this award is a memory that I will always cherish. T h r oop St. 6 : 3 5 P M S TA R T 500 COVERALL Here are some tips to create a safe environment for everyone living in your home: Christmas trees and their decorations can be beautiful. Make sure the tree base is solid to avoid tipping over, or being knocked over by a rambunctious dog or a cat exploring tree branches. Yes, it s hard to stop them from climbing, but a sturdy base will eliminate tree crashes and potential fires. Wiring on the lights should be done properly and the wires should be in good shape. Any electrical wiring should stay far away from a curious pup, especially if he s a chewer. Ornaments should stay high up, away from dogs and cats- way too appealing for a toy loving animal. Get down on your hands and knees and check for safety from your pet s eye level. If you light candles make sure your dogs stay away while they burn and the candles aren t left to burn unattended. Pets often try to get up on the table to lick crumbs. With candles burning, it could be disastrous. Holly, mistletoe and poinsettia are all toxic to dogs. So is chocolate. Keep them out of your dog s reach. Will your family be unwrapping gifts? Wrapping and gift-wrap decorations along with toys with small parts, or any toys that can be chewed or even that pair of socks from Aunt Gertrude, can all pose a potential danger to your pooch or kitty. Holding a holiday celebration? If your dog isn t too friendly to strangers, consider placing him in his crate and be sure to give him plenty of love and exercise prior to lockdown. Cats either hide or are fine with most guests, but can be food thieves. So no food can go out onto the table unattended if your cats are mixing with the party. It is a challenge When entertaining, Diane suggests you ask your dog walker if she can take the dogs out for a bit. It gets them out of the house, stimulated and it s an alternative to the stress of having them here- at least for part of the time. Will there be noisemakers or fireworks on New Years Eve? Dogs are rather sensitive to loud and sudden noises. Help reduce their stress and keep them from fleeing by using the crate. Traveling over the holidays? Traveling with or without your pup is a great option too. If you travel and Fido stays home, be sure to find a trusted pet sitter or doggie daycare to care for him while you are gone. Bringing Fido along? Check airline regulations if you are flying and whether or not he is small enough to have in the cabin with you. If you are driving, make sure he s securely fastened in a crash tested car harness or car seat. Pack enough food, treats, a leash, travel food bowls, a dog bed and his favorite toys for the adventure. And don t forget poop bags. You will likely need them wherever you go Be sure the information on his tags and microchip are up to date with your cell phone number just in case he gets lost while you are traveling. Always know where the nearest emergency vet is located. The unexpected always happens at the worst time. Once pet parents have the safety matters handled their minds will be free to enjoy a fun and joyous holiday says Certified Humane Education Specialist Diane Rose-Solomon. The club is based upon the concepts of Girls Who Code, a national nonprofit organization that is dedicated to closing the gender gap in technology. Moderating the Coding Club at De La Salle is faculty member Diniah Dean. In addition to teaching the Introduction to App/Web Development and Introduction to Programming and Coding classes, Dean also serves as a Technology Resource Center Manager at De La Salle, which is going coeducational in the 2017-18 school year. De La Salle, which has offered an outstanding Lasallian college preparatory education since 1889, is located in Chicago s South Loop/Bronzeville community at 3434 S. Michigan Ave. When I was informed that (the) Big Shoulders (Foundation) wanted to sponsor a club here at De La Salle, I was simply overjoyed, Dean said. Technology is such a huge part of my life and I want to share it with as many young women as possible. De La Salle s Coding Club currently has 15 members with many more students interested in joining later in the school year, according to Dean. The students have shown tremendous interest in Girls Who Code, Dean said. I am so excited that we have launched our very first Girls Who Code club at the Lourdes Hall Campus. Membership in the Coding Club at De La Salle allows the students to learn to code and to use computer science to impact their community as Girls Who Code provides community and support for young women to explore computer science in a fun, friendly environment. Thus far, the members of De La Salle s Coding Club have submitted two applications for Verizon s Innovations App Challenge. The first app titled Save Our City is an app dedicated to help decrease the violence in Chicago. The second app is Global Garbage Busters and is designed to get everyday people involved in keeping our city clean. Along with that, the De La Salle students are beginning work on Java Script and Python programming languages. By being members of the Coding Club, the girls gain valuable computer science skills, including the Core 4 concepts that form the basis for all computer programming languages, Dean said. The Core 4 concepts loops, variables, conditionals and functions are critical whether girls want to build a mobile application, website or Front Row: Nina Penny; Krystale Cole; Alexis Leon. The benefits are endless for my students in Girls Who Code. I am extremely proud of each and every one of them. In the 2015-16 school year, students in Dean s Introduction to App and Web Development Class were chosen a Best in State winner in the Verizon Innovative App Challenge. Chosen from more than 1,200 contestants, the students from the Lourdes Hall Campus for Young Women created the app concept Furry Friend Finder. ***** Santa Breakfast Let us keep Christmas beautiful without a thought of greed, that it might live forevermore to fill our every need, that it shall not be just a day, but last a lifetime through, the miracle of Christmastime that brings God close to you. - Ann Schultz at St. Barbara The St. Barbara Santa Breakfast was a great success A special thank you to Mrs. Marge Young and family for putting together another fun and exciting event.
