April 10-24, 2016 October 18-25, 2018 Berlin India Thriving Art & Culture in the New Germany Jennifer Allen Paul Freedman Chester D. Tripp Professor of History Assistant Professor, Chair, Department History of Science, of History History of Medicine

Dear Yale Traveler In the nearly three decades since the fall of the Wall, no other European city has undergone a greater transformation than Berlin. Bold designs by some of the world s most renowned architects including Frank Gehry, Daniel Libeskind, and Norman Foster have sparked the city s renaissance, while thought-provoking monuments have redefined its urban space. Immerse yourself in Berlin s remarkable history and landscape during a perfect week in this vibrant capital. In addition, your accommodations are at the luxurious Hotel Regent Berlin, steps from the central Mitte district. Please join me to experience Berlin s landmarks, old and new, and discover why the city has been and continues to be such a beloved destination for artists, intellectuals, political figures, and travellers from around the world. Highlights include the outstanding collections on Museum Island, a musical performance at one of the city s fine venues (pending schedules), and a visit to Sammlung Boros, an extraordinary private art collection housed in an above-ground former WWII-era bunker. Spend a day in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Potsdam to see the Rococo palace of Sans Souci, built by King Frederick the Great as a summer residence, and the Neues Palais, the preferred residence of William II. Together, we will peel back the layers of history that have shaped the contemporary topography of this political, cultural, and economic powerhouse in Europe. Our lectures and discussions will explore the rich legacies of the seven different political systems Berlin has witnessed in the past century-and-a-half. We will survey its dramatic experiences, which range from catastrophe, trauma, and violence to triumph and elation. But we will also be sure to get acquainted with some of the city s most fascinating nooks and crannies. These local histories tell us a less well-known but equally incredible story about the city s astonishing resilience and creativity. Space on this exceptional program is limited. Please visit yaleedtravel.org/berlin18 to register now, or call Yale Educational Travel at (203) 432-1952 or email edtravel@ yale.edu with any questions. With best wishes from Yale, Neues Palais, photo by cityscouter Highlights Enhance your appreciation of the history of Berlin with lectures and informal talks by Professor Jennifer Allen, a historian of modern Germany See the outstanding collections of Museum Island and view iconic treasures, from the bust of Queen Nefertiti to the Pergamon Altar to the Brandenburg Gate Discover striking architectural landmarks and world-class museums designed by Frank Gehry, Daniel Libeskind, Norman Foster, I.M. David Jackson Professor of Portuguese Belgium & Holland by Barge Aboard Magnifique II 4/22 4/30/18 Gene Moore 69 Emeritus Professor, University of Amsterdam Yale Study Leader Jennifer Allen, Assistant Professor, Department of History Jennifer Allen is a historian of modern Germany with a particular interest in late twentieth-century cultural practices. She is currently working on a book titled In Pursuit of Sustainable Utopia: Art, Political Culture, and Historical Practice in Germany, 1980-2000, which charts the history of Germany s grassroots efforts to revitalize the concept of utopia for the postwar era. In a related research project, Allen traces how Germany s grassroots commemorative practices have become a model for international communities as diverse as Moscow and Buenos Aires over the past thirty years. Allen received her B.A. in political and social thought from the University of Virginia and her M.A. and Ph.D. in history from the University of California, Berkeley. At Yale, Allen teaches undergraduate and graduate courses on modern German history, the theories and practices of memory modern Europe, and the history of the Holocaust. Infusing past with present, MacLean relates the city's volatile history over five centuries through a series of intimate portraits of two dozen key residents. The Berlin Diaries by Marie Vassiltchikov The compulsively readable wartime diary of an emigré Russian princess who was secretary to Adam Von Trott, mastermind of the failed 20th of July Plot to assassinate Hitler. The book is both an absorbing portrait of 1940s Berlin and a gripping account of political conspiracy. The Ghosts of Berlin: Confronting German History in the Urban Landscape by Brian Ladd In this compelling work, Brian Ladd examines the ongoing conflicts radiating from the remarkable fusion of architecture, history, and national identity in Berlin.
