IDEAS! SABD senior lecturer Ms. Tamil Salvi Mari, regards teaching as a noble profession. With a Master s degree in Environment Studies from Universiti Putra Malaysia and a Bachelor of Science in Housing, Building and Planning (Hons) from Universiti Sains Malaysia, she spent five years in the architecture industry before discovering her true passion for teaching. I believe that one should only teach if he or she enjoys doing it. Throughout my 14 years of teaching experience, I have seen the difference between teachers who enjoy what they do and those who do not. You cannot fully carry out your duties as a teacher if you don t enjoy teaching, explained Ms. Salvi. To establish a positive student-teacher relationship, she says a teacher must be able to identify their students by names and understand their backgrounds. I do hope that my students enjoy my classes! Tamil Salvi Mari Having teachers with a good sense of humour also helps promote a more spirited classroom environment making it more conducive for learning among the younger generation. I do hope that my students enjoy my classes! Ms. Salvi adds. Ms. Salvi s research interest is in the area of environmentally sustainable design. Since joining Taylor s in 2004, she has presented her research papers in numerous conferences, such as the Teaching and Learning Conference at Taylor s University, the 4th International Conference on Built Environment in Developing Countries (ICBEDC 2010) and the Asian Green Construction Summit Singapore 2011. In addition to her teaching responsibilities, Ms. Salvi serves as Programme Director for the Bachelor of Science (Hons) (Architecture) and Stream Coordinator for Environmental Studies.
