H.E.C Green is a private initiative born to fulfill a public need: Lebanon s need for green spaces following major forest damage and decline due to the forest fires of October 2007. All it took to conceive H.E.C Green was one glance at an environmental awareness billboard: the billboard stated that only a small fraction of greenery remains in our beloved Lebanon. The forest fires that had ravaged the country threatened its natural heritage, an integral part of national treasure. We at H.E.C could not sit back idly and let that happen. Accordingly, we decided to give gardens and greenery a substantial share in our real estate projects in Lebanon, some well underway and others planned for completion in the next five years. These lush, landscaped, newly planted green spaces will be permanently in place - maintenance and preservation are guaranteed. Each of the projects included in H.E.C Green will be planted with trees and plants, such as olive and pine, compatible with the location s existing vegetation to preserve the habitat and flavor of the place. To implement its plan, and in support of Lebanese tree nurseries, H.E.C Green is purchasing, from local sources, some 80 medium- to large-sized trees, as well as plants and grass. Below are some of the projects covered by this program The first to witness completion (mid-summer 2008) was Alta Vista 2 and 3 in Broumana. Out of its total area of 2500sqm, 1700sqm consists of newly planted green space, complemented by attractive all-natural stone water fountains. Next are Rock Hill 2 in Antelias, Rockland 2, 3, 4, and 5 in Mansourieh and Pine Hill Fanar all of which will feature newly greened surroundings and trees skirting their perimeters. As for the Mazraat Yashouh project it incorporates Green Dome architecture, which places greenery within the building for a healthier eco-friendly lifestyle. Finally, H.E.C 730, whose ultra-urban location in Achrafieh makes it practically impossible to create a garden on the ground, will incorporate floral rims around the exterior facades of its floors. Through H.E.C Green, we hope to pave the way for a sustainable long-term greening strategy. We welcome partnership proposals from investors interested in creating a greener Lebanon. We also welcome any competition or trend this initiative will create. Consistent with H.E.C s other humanitarian initiative, H.E.C Heart (launched following the July 2006 war), H.E.C Green is the latest ambitious step in the company s long tradition of philanthropy, national loyalty and community commitment. This innovative program takes the lead to embrace a growing trend among the world s mega-corporations to address environmental concerns, eco-living and forest preservation. Above all, H.E.C Green is our way of giving back to the environment that sustains us. Last year, H.E.C Green planted 250 cedars to celebrate its 50th anniversary in the forest named after H.E. President of the Lebanese Republic General Michel Sleiman. This initiative, which will contribute to Lebanon s environment and forests, is set to be the beginning of many other similar initiatives in the future. The Israeli bombardment of Lebanon in Summer 2006 resulted in tragedy: mass destruction particularly in the Lebanese south and Beirut s southern suburbs, the displacement of millions, and the death and injury of thousands. It was thus that the H.E.C Heart program was launched: a natural response to a national disaster. Within this program, H.E.C sought to lend multi-faceted assistance from the provision of survival kits to the removal of rubble. Escaping the bombing, the majority of internally displaced people sought shelter in public schools in Mount Lebanon and North Lebanon. Most were forced to abandon their homes empty-handed, leaving their belongings behind. In their temporary residence in public schools, crowded families lacked the bare necessities of life: they needed water, food, supplies for babies and children, medications, detergents and clothing. H.E.C sought to help as many people as it could, lending assistance to a hundred families residing in Mount Lebanon schools. As soon as the ceasefire went into effect on August 14, people immediately went back to their homes and villages, only to find in ashes and burned to the ground what had taken them a lifetime to build. As a company rooted in community commitment, and like many concerned citizens, H.E.C joined Aidlebanon in its cause at Tyre by providing humanitarian and social relief. H.E.C donated food and medication and helped clean up public roads blocked by rubble. Aidlebanon aims to spread the culture of life and to relieve all those in need, as well as victims of war and atrocities in Lebanon, an aim which intersects with H.E.C s sense of national duty and humanitarian consciousness. In addition to its aid during the war, H.E.C Heart has been helping, on a regular basis, different organizations for orphans, elderly people who have no children to care for them, and families in need of food and nurture. H.E.C hopes that its steps in this regard will constitute an inspiration and an invitation for all corporations and individuals similarly willing to lend a helping hand.
