INTEGRATION Bill Bourne, AIA, NCARB Senior Associate Populous, Inc. With nearly a decade of experience, Bill has played an integral role in the design of agriculture centers, fairgrounds, expo, entertainment and equestrian/livestock venues. He loves learning about each community s unique stories and celebrating those through design. His experience includes all phases of design from concept development to contract documents and construction oversight. With a focus on flexibility and functionality, Bill has a keen understanding of designing buildings to serve a wide variety of exhibition, education and community uses. Populous global practice has allowed Bill to work and collaborate with people on projects in the Americas, Middle East, Australia and China. He received a Master s Degrees from the University of Kansas (2007), and is licensed in Missouri and Kansas. Bill stays engaged in the local community through local arts organizations. Tom Waggoner, AIA Senior Vice President Managing Principal HOK Tom Waggoner, AIA, is a Senior Vice President and Managing Principal for HOK s Kansas City office. Tom brings more than 35 years of experience focused on the renovation and new construction of collegiate sports facilities and the development of athletic facility master plans for universities across the nation. Known for his ability to lead diverse client and user groups through the planning and design process, his solutions offer an exceptional fan experience while providing the resources and amenities desired by today s student athletes. All of Tom s projects are tailored to the unique context of each campus and the objectives of the program it serves. Tom s recent projects include the University of North Carolina Athletics Master Plan, Auburn University Arena & Player Development Facility, the University of Washington Husky Stadium Renovation, the Southern Methodist University Moody Coliseum Renovation, and the University of Missouri Athletics Master Plan. In addition to his involvement with national and local sports organizations, Tom is a member of the Friends of the Zoo Board of Directors for the Kansas City Zoo, Starlight Theatre Board of Directors, the Dean s Advisory Council for the College of Architecture, Planning and Design at Kansas State University, and the KC Sports Commission Board of Directors. Throughout his career, Tom has been an active supporter of organizations that engage and advance women and girls in sports, including Women s Intersport Network for Kansas City (WIN for KC) and the National Association of Collegiate Women s Athletic Administrators (NACWAA). Tom was previously a principal at Ellerbe Becket. He has a Bachelor of Architecture degree from the Kansas State University.
CONSTRUCTION Marshall Frey, STS Project Manager Clark Construction Group Marshall is a Project Manager for Clark Construction s Texas Office and oversees the day to day operations of multiple projects across the Houston metro-area. His day to day tasks include leading pre-construction efforts, buyout, client relations, coordination, schedule maintenance, financial reporting and on-site management. Marshall is currently working to conclude the $45 million dollar Tenaris Bay City Administrative Campus while breaking ground on the $10.9 Air Traffic Control Tower at Ellington Field. Marshall has completed a wide variety of projects in Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, California, Colorado and Guam; ranging from heavy civil/infrastructure to federal design build contracts. Marshall has had the privilege of working with clients such as NASA, NAVFAC, Kroger and Trammell-Crow. Marshall is a graduate of Kansas State University (2012).
ELECTRICAL Julie Pierce, PE, LEED AP BD+C Vice President Director of Operations Kansas City Henderson Engineers Julie Pierce is a vice president, professional engineer, and LEED accredited professional. She received her Bachelors of Science in Architectural Engineering from the University of Kansas and is licensed in Kansas, Maryland, and Missouri. During her 18 years with Henderson Engineers, Julie Pierce has helped Henderson grow and expand both locally and nationally to more than 650 people in 12 offices nationwide. As a vice president and the director of operations for Henderson s Kansas City office, she currently leads both Henderson s architectural lighting design team, which she founded, and an engineering team that focuses primarily on sports & recreation, higher education, and corporate markets. With a background in architectural engineering and a love for lighting design, her passion blends art and science. An avid supporter of the engineering profession, Julie serves in numerous capacities within the industry through teaching, mentoring, and as an advisory member for architectural engineering students. Julie is also dedicated to elevating women in the engineering industry and is a member of the board of directors for Henderson's women's group, Empow(HER). As a mentor for the Future City middle school competition, Julie enjoys sharing her experiences and knowledge in engineering with young individuals who have an enthusiasm for math and science. She is currently on the Executive Committee as well as the Business Attraction & Retention Committee for the Downtown Council of Kansas City and is an active member of both IESNA and USGBC. Michael A. Ruff, PE, LEED AP Director of Electrical Engineering T/E/S Engineering I have 34 years of experience in the design of electrical distribution, lighting, fire alarm and communication systems. My experience includes all phases of electrical engineering including due diligence and existing systems reports, field investigation, construction documents and specifications, field supervision, cost estimating and construction administration. I have been involved in a wide range of new and renovation projects in commercial, health care, retail, education, institutional, hospitality and industrial facilities. Prior to joining TES Engineering, I was managing member of KME Consulting LLC, an eight person MEP consulting engineering firm. Also, for several years, I managed the design build project delivery group within a large electrical contracting firm where my team was responsible for projects from inception through final design, including cost estimating, project management, construction scheduling, material procurement and commissioning. MECHANICAL James Dietz, PE, LEED AP Associate Henderson Engineers James Dietz is an associate, professional engineer, and LEED accredited professional with 15 years of experience in mechanical systems design. He received his Bachelors of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the Missouri University of Science and Technology and is licensed in Arkansas, Kansas, and Missouri. James has extensive knowledge and experience in a wide range of mixed-use, retail, sports /recreation, higher education, and federal facilities, where he has served as the project manager and/or lead mechanical engineer. As a project manager, James has a passion for the space experience and the process of developing it. He believes that heating/air conditioning, lighting, and acoustics play an important role in how much people enjoy a space and the design of those systems make the difference. James is an active member of AIA KC, advocating for the design process. Outside of work, James has volunteered with the ACE mentor program and participated in college & high school job shadowing programs. He also helps out with Sunday school at his church, cub scouting, and a local re-use store focused on helping the homeless in Kansas City. Don Posson, PE, CCP, CPD, GGP, LEED AP Vice President SmithGroupJJR Don is the Corporate Director of Engineering for SmithGroupJJR, a global A/E/P firm, and is responsible for their Mechanical, Electrical, Fire Protection and Structural Engineering groups. He maintains oversight for building systems engineering in all global and domestic branches. He received a Bachelor of Science in Architectural Engineering from Kansas State University (1986), and is licensed to practice in 17 states. Mr. Posson is a nationally recognized leader in high-performance systems design and has significant experience leading the development of award winning designs for large and small scale sustainable projects, including several net-zero energy buildings. Don has lectured on the integration of sustainable design approaches at the University of Maryland, the University of Pennsylvania, Catholic University, George Washington University, Marymount University and Drexel University, and he has been published in Consulting Specifying Engineer, Engineered Systems, Architectural Record as well as Environmental Design & Construction.
STRUCTURAL Sarah A. Appleton, PE, SE Principal Wallace Engineering (Atlanta) Sarah Appleton is a principal at Wallace Engineering working out of their Atlanta office. She received her Bachelor of Science in Architectural Engineering and her Master of Science in Architectural Engineering from Kansas State University. She has been a licensed engineer since 2008 and is currently licensed as a Professional Engineer in nine states and as a Structural Engineer in three states. Her project management and engineering design experience includes educational, healthcare, commercial and retail, multifamily residential, high-end residential, and industrial facilities. Her project experience includes rehabilitation, remodel and additions to existing structures as well as new construction. Sarah serves on the Basic Education Committee for NCSEA (National Council of Structural Engineers Associations), serves as a board member of the Kansas State University Architectural Engineering Advisory Council, and serves on the Shoot for Success Planning Committee and chairs the Programs Committee for SMPS Atlanta. She is also an active member of the Structural Engineers Association of Georgia. Matt Schachle, PE Associate Wallace Engineering (Oklahoma City) Mr. Schachle has over 11 years of experience in the field of structural engineering and he is an Associate at Wallace Engineering in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Matt strives to help Architectural clients achieve their creative designs, while upholding public safety as a top priority. He has experience serving as project manager and engineer for a variety of project types including education, retail, hospitality, and expansions to existing structures. Projects have ranged in size from 8,000 square feet - 300,000 square feet and in construction cost from $1mil to $80mil. With the range of type of projects he has worked on, this has allowed him to become proficient in investigations of existing structures and constructions observations. He has also been involved in managing and successfully growing national building program accounts. Matt has been a licensed Professional Engineer since 2011.
