THE DAULTON FAMILY OF MANUTUKE, GISBORNE THOMAS DAULTON began his business life in the Wanstead district of Hawke s Bay as a Coachman in the early 1880 after having been in the Partnership Tyne & Daulton Poverty Bay Herald, 4 May 1896 Mr Daulton, of the Arai store, notifies that residents of that district are under no necessity to come to town for goods, as he is selling his large stock at lowest town prices Mr Thomas Daulton died 7 October 1907 aged 55yrs at Manutuke and he was buried in the Makaraka Cemetery Poverty Bay Herald, 10 October 1907 The interment of the late Mr Thomas Daulton, of Te Arai, took place at Makaraka cemetery yesterday afternoon and was attended by a large number of country settlers, together with several residents from town, including the representatives of various warehouse firms. Half a dozen Te Arai settlers acted as pall bearers, whilst the funeral service at the grave side was conducted by the Rev Fathers Land and Dignan Thomas DAULTON (1852-1907) married 5 March 1881 Sarah Jane HUDSON (1864-1947) Very soon after his marriage to Sarah Jane, Thomas & Sarah Daulton were storekeepers at Te Arai, Manutuke, near Gisborne. An old and highly respected resident, Mr Thomas Daulton of Te Arai, died last evening, and the funeral leaves the family residence at Te Arai tomorrow afternoon. Mr Daulton had been ailing for some time past, but his death came as a shock to his wife and family and many friends. He was well-known through-out the district, having kept a store for many years at Te Arai, where lie took a keen interest m school matters and all other local affairs After Thomas s death on 1907, Sarah shifted to Taneatua in Bay of Plenty to live for a while with her son George. Sarah Jane Daulton died in 1947 aged 83 yrs

He embarked from Auckland 1 Feb 1902. His next of kin was Thomas Daulton, father, at Te Arai Bridge, Gisborne. 3 March 1903 - Thomas died from an abscess on the brain in Te Arai, Gisborne, after being invalided home from South Africa Press, 3 March 1903 - DEATH OF A TROOPER Thomas Daulton, aged 21, died tonight. He was a member of the Seventh Contingent, and was injured by a fall from a horse in South Africa. On the voyage home he contracted pneumonia. He recovered somewhat on landing, but an abscess near the brain set in. He was a very popular young fellow. b. 1883 - Joseph (Joe) Edward DAULTON Joseph attended the Matawhero School In 1916 - Joseph Daulton married Gladys Catherine CRAILL (b.1895), daughter of Henry CRAILL & Catherine Mary nee ROBB. Henry Craill was the manager of John Clark's 11,000 acre, Te Arai station 7 May 1969 Joseph Daulton died in Gisborne aged 85 years and his wife Gladys died in 1970. Both rare buried in Gisborne. His Memorial stone can be found in the Makaraka Cemetery, Gisborne, which has been laid on the same site where his baby sister Mary Catherine died aged 2 mths in 1891 His stone is erected by The New Zealand Soldiers Graves Guild to the memory of Private THOMAS MILES DAULTON, late 9th New Zealand Contingent, died 3 March 1903. No 14. In loving memory of JOSEPH EDWARD DAULTON, aged 85 years, died 7 May 1969. R.I.P. = and GLADYS CATHERINE DAULTON, aged 74 years, died 6 January 1970.

b. 3 Apr 1887 - George Michael Daulton was born at Matawhero, Gisborne He attended the Te Arai School 1917 b. 22 Aug 1885 - William Charles Daulton was born in Manutuke He attended the Te Ari School Trooper William C Daulton # 11/1788 served in WWI with the 7th Reinforcements, Wellington Mounted Rifles. He embarked from Wellington 9 Oct 1915. His next of kin was his brother Joe at Manutuke, Gisborne. 23 Dec 1916 - Trooper William C Daulton # 11/1788 died of his wounds in Egypt & is buried Grave A.194 at Kantara War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt 1917-1919 Private George Michael Daulton # 57044 served in WWI with the NZEF, 29th Reinforcements F Coy Canterbury Infantry Regt. At the age of 29 yrs 10 mths he embarked from Wellington 13 August 1917 for Glasgow. His next of kin was his mother at Manutuke, Gisborne. 1918 - Served in France, He was discharged 20 August 1919 in NZ. George was a storekeeper in his father s store and in 1912 he managed the Billiard Rooms at Manutuke. He later shifted to Taneatua and his mother went there to live also. (F Company). He embarked from Wellington 30 Dec 1916. He was the father of 2 daughters, Mabel & Elma at the time he left for the war. Bertha, his wife, was his next of kin at Manutuke He suffered from Asthmatic Bronchitis during the war and was hospitalised in Liverpool. 21 August 1918 - He was discharged to an address in Wairoa. Later they shifted to Dargaville Their son:- 12 June 1892 - Royal Frederick (Roy) was born at Matawhero, Gisborne Roy was a storekeeper in his father s store Pte. William Hugh Snowden # 63342, of the NZ Infantry. 21 st Btn, was Killed in Action 25 Oct 1942 aged 22 and is buried El Alamein War Cemetery, Egypt. Rifleman Royal F Daulton # 18630 served in WWI with the New Zealand Rifle Brigade, 9th Reinforcements 2nd Battalion, F Company. He embarked from Wellington 26 July 1916. He enlisted at the same time as his brother Harold and Frank. His next of kin was his mother at Manutuke, Gisborne. In 1917 - He was wounded and hospitalized in England. 12 Sep 1918 Rflmn Royal Frederick Daulton # 18630 was killed in action at Havrincourt, France & is buried Grave V. D. 17, at Metz-en-Couture Communal Cemetery British Extension, Pas-de- Calais, France 26 Aug 1946 Frederick SNOWDEN, farmer, died in Auckland Poverty Bay Herald, 26 September 1918 - DAULTON 12th September 1918 - Killed in action in France. Royal Frederick Daulton, beloved fifth son of Mrs Daulton, Manutuke, aged 26 years. b. 1894 - Catherine Elma Daulton was born In 1921 Catherine Elma married James JOBSON (b. 1892), son of William JOBSON & Mary DIXON, farmer at Matawhero 1915-1919 - Sergeant James JOBSON # 11/1813 served in WWI with the Wellington Mounted Rifles 7th Regiment, in Egypt. His Mother, Mary of Matawhero, was declared as his next of kin and he was a farmer from Manutuke. He enlisted 24 August 1915 at Trentham and was discharged 5 September 1919 1941 - James JOBSON # 2/24/110 enlisted for the No 4 Independent Mounted Rifles - Home Guard during WWII, based in Gisborne/Napier area and received the NZ War & 1939-1945 War Medals. 19 March 1960 James DOBSON died aged 67 16 August 1965 Catherine DOBSON died aged 71. They are both buried Plot 28, Block 27 at Taruheru Cemetery 14 April 1961 - Harold John Daulton died in Takapuna, Auckland and is buried in the Birkenhead/Glenfield Cemetery - Public Lawn Row K Plot 14 1982 Clara Isabel Daulton died 14 June 1898 - Frank Hudson Daulton was born in Gisborne Prior to the war Frank was a Labourer working in Palmerston North. After the war he became an electrician in Opotiki 1916-1919 - Lance Corporal Frank H Daulton # 18628 served in WWI as Rifleman with the NZ Rifle Brigade, 15th Reinforcements F Company, in France. He embarked from Wellington 26 July 1916. His next of kin was his mother at Manutuke, Gisborne (Frank enlisted at the same time as his brothers Harold and Roy). In Aug 1917 Frank wounded his hand and was hospitalized in London. He was promoted to Lance Corporal in June 1918 He was discharge 25 June 1919 Frank DAULTON married Lorna Alice MORTLEMAN, (b. 1896) daughter of Arthur & Elizabeth MORTLEMAN of Makauri, Gisborne 30 August 1964 - Frank Hudson DAULTON died in the Opotiki Hospital and is buried in the Opotiki Cemetery b. 6 March 1896 - Harold John Daulton was born in Manutuke Harold was a Coach Driver for the family business. 1916 - Corporal Harold Daulton # 18629 served in WWI as Rifleman with the 1st Battalion, 3 rd NZ Rifle Brigade in Western Europe. He embarked from Wellington 25 July 1916. His next of kin was his mother at Manutuke, Gisborne. (Harold enlisted at same time as his brothers Royal & Frank). In April 1917 he was admitted to Hospital in London when he became sick with Bronchitis. He was promoted to Corporal 30 Oct 1918. He was discharged 13 Dec 1918 27 November 1973 Lorna Alice Daulton died in Gisborne & is buried in the Opotiki Cemetery In 1923 Harold DAULTON married Clara Isabel BATEMAN (b. 1900) daughter of Aldeberontifus James BATEMAN & Mary Ann/Marianne KILLGOUR of Parawai In Loving Memory of Lorna Alice Beloved wife of Frank Hudson Daulton And Loving Sister and Aunt of the Mortleman Family
