DOZIER FAMILY PAPERS AR 774 Dozier family, ca. 1920 Southern Baptist Historical Library and Archives Updated February, 2012

2 Dozier Family Papers AR 774 Summary Main Entry: Dozier Family Papers Date Span: 1904 1980 Abstract: Charles Kelsey Dozier, his wife Maude Burke, his son Edwin Charles Dozier, and his wife, Mary Ellen Wiley, were Southern Baptist Career missionaries to Japan from 1906 to 1973. The Dozier Family Papers span their years of active missionary service and contain articles, speeches, sermons, poetry, diaries, personal documentation, some photographs, and personal correspondence. Size: 7.5 linear ft. (5 boxes) Collection #: AR 774 Biographical Sketch The Dozier Family Papers is a collection of correspondence and personal papers that record the work of two generations from the same family of Southern Baptist missionaries to Japan. Beginning with the parents, Charles Kelsey Dozier (1879 1933) and Maude Burke Dozier (1881 1972), the work continues through their two children, Edwin Burke Dozier (1908 1969) and Helen Dozier Pietsch (1910 ), and Edwin's wife, Mary Ellen Wiley Dozier (1907 ). The papers cover the years from 1906 through 1973 of active missionary service, which includes World Wars I and II, and their aftermath, and the great depression of 1929. Particularly insightful is the story of the Dozier's relocation from Japan to the Philippine Islands during World War II and their eventual return, beginning with Edwin in October, 1946. Records chronicle the deaths, on the field, of Charles Kelsey Dozier, 1933, and Edwin Burke Dozier, 1969, both dying of heart attacks ending remarkably similar careers. The retirements of Maude Burke Dozier, 1950, and Mary Ellen Dozier, 1973, are also included. Scope and Content Note The Dozier family papers, spanning 67 years of active missionary service, was given to the Historical Commission Southern Baptist Convention, Library and Archives, in 1992. The papers include biographies, articles, speeches, sermons, poetry, diaries of Kelsey, Maude, Edwin, and Mary Ellen Dozier, and personal documentation, such as passports, identification, and death forms. Some photographs are also included in the collection.
