HABITAT III POLICY UNIT 8 Urban Ecology and Resilience September 2015 1

EXPERTS Each Policy Unit is composed by 20 experts, coming from different geographic areas and constituencies. They have been appointed by the Secretary General of the Conference, in close consultation with the Bureau of the Preparatory Committee for Habitat III, after receiving nominations from Member States and stakeholders. The main objectives of the Policy Unit are: // To bring together high-level expertise to explore state-of-the-art research and analysis on specific themes; // To identify good practices and lessons learned; and // To develop policy recommendations on particular issues regarding sustainable urban development. Duties, and responsibilities for the policy unit experts 2 Contribute with reviewing substantive documents prepared for the process of the Post-2015, and other relevant intergovernmental conferences; Support conducing analysis of the available data, including statistics and information in Habitat III Issue Papers, outcomes from official Regional and Thematic meetings, etc. Support preparation of the structure, the preliminary contents and messages of the Policy Papers at the first and second Expert Group Meetings (EGM1 and EGM2); Participate in meetings organized online and other virtual exchanges; Advise on incorporating proposed changes into the draft Policy Papers, harmonize Policy Papers and submit it to the Habitat III Secretariat.

The twenty experts for Policy Unit 8 are (alphabetical order): Anna Sjodin Flood Risk Management Coordinator, City of Karlstad Ms Sjödin is the Flood Risk Management Coordinator, and a member of UPAG - Urban Planning Advisory Group, an advisory group to UNISDR (United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction. Her work as a flood risk manager includes a broad range of issues from technical flood prevention projects to strategic issues that includes national and international work. She is responsible for flood risk maps, management plans, contingency plans, technical barriers, flooding issues in city planning, information/ communication with citizens regarding flood risks, EU projects and is the city s coordinator for the UNISDR campaign Making Cities Resilient. Bruna Kohan Italian Ministry of Environment She holds PhD in Sustainable Urban Development. Environmental Senior Expert of the Italian Ministry of Environment for the UN Habitat Program. Expert Senior Lecturer for educational training for Civil Servants of Public Administration. Environmental Senior Consultant for European Social Fund (ESF)/Ministry of Resources and Rural Affairs - Malta/ European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). Danang Parikesit Professor, Universitas Gadjah Mada He is a leading transportation expert in the Asia. He is a university professor of transportation studies at the Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) in Indonesia, the oldest state university in Indonesia. He started his Civil and Environmental Engineering education in the Faculty of Engineering at UGM in 1983, received his B.Sc. Degree in 1986, and followed by his Engineering Degree (Ir.) in 1988. He also received a Master degree from the Institute for Transport Studies (ITS) of Leeds University, UK, in 1990, and a Doctoral degree (with predicate summa cum laude) from the Institute for Transport Planning and Engineering of Vienna University of Technology, Austria in 1996. 3 David Dodman Senior Researcher, Internaitonal Institute for Environment and Development He has more than ten years of experience in the fields of urban geography, international development, and climate change adaptation. He has contributed to significant international reports. Currently Acting Group Head, Human Settlements Group. Contributed to reports including UN Habitat -Global Report on Human Settlements and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change- Fifth Assessment Report. Eeva Furman Director of the Centre Finnish Environment Institute Currently she is Director for the Centre for Environmental Policy at Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE), and was past manager of the research programme for environmental policy at Finnish environment institute. She studied at Bangor University, and University of Helsinki, Kauniaisten lukio. She holds a PhD in Marine Biology. She s the Director of the Centre for Environmental Policy. Involved with UNECA, Rio +20. Lecturer, Senior Researcher.

Elena Palacios Asesora Tecnica Ambiental, Direccion de Camnio Climatico, Secretaria de Ambiente y Desarrollo Sustentable She holds a Postgraduate degree in Health and Safety at Work, National Technological University (UTN ). She is also the Environmental Technical Advisor, Department of Climate Change, Ministry of Environment and sustainable development. Reviewer and contributor to the edition of GEO Latin America and the Caribbean: Environment Outlook, 2009. Fatimetou Mint Abdel Malik President of the Network of Local Elected Officer of Africa Mayor for Tevragh -Zeina since 2001, president of the network of local elected officers of Africa, specialist in urban risk, floods, dune destruction and coastal erosion and desertification, Maurutania. Frances Birungi-Odong Uganda Community Based Association for Child Welfare Director of program (Governance and Human rights program) for the Uganda Community based association for women and children welfare. She holds degree in social sciences and masters in Human rights. Worked with UCOBAC for the 12 years developing and implementing activities to protect and promote the rights of women and children in rights to education, health, water and sanitation. He Yong Director of Planning Research Office of Beijing Municipal Institute of City Planning and Design She s a Senior Urban Planner at Professor Level studying urban ecology, disaster prevention and urban engineering planning. 4 Lance J. Brown President of the American Institute of Architects New York Chapter He has a B. Arch., Harvard University; 1966, M. Arch. in UD, Harvard University; 1967. He has taught as a Professor, CCNY/CUNY; 1984-present, Assoc. Professor, CCNY; 1974-1983, Adjunct Professor, CCNY/CUNY; 1973, and Assistant Professor in Princeton University; 1968-1972. On Professional Experience, he is the Principal, Lance Jay Brown Architecture + Urban Design; 1972-present, Associate Director, Design Arts Program, NEA, Washington; DC 1979-1983, Partner, Brown + Bee Architects; 1979-1982 among others. He is currently the President of the American Institute of Architects New York Chapter, Elected Board Member and President-Elect 2014 and Institute for Urban Design, Fellow Consortium for Sustainable Urbanization, Founding Board Member. Leke Oduwaye Department of Urban and Regional Planning, Faculty of Environmental Sciences, University of Lagos He is a Town planner, an Architect, Principal partner of Leke Oduwaye Associates in Nigeria. Member and held various position in Nigeria Institute of Town Planners, Toen Planners Registration Council of Nigeria, Nigeria Institutes of Architects, Architects Registration council of Nigeria, International Society of City and Panning. Urban research Network New York, African Urban Research Initiative.

Livia Bizikova Knowledge for Integrated Decisions, International Institute for Sustainable Development She is Director, Knowledge for Integrated Decisions, with experience in the fields of sustainable development, scenario development, participatory planning and integrated assessment. She works with diverse stakeholders: decision-makers at various levels; agencies including the United Nations Environment Program, the United Nations Development Program and the World Bank; and countries including Canada, Ghana, Uganda, Kenya, Mozambique, Tajikistan, China, Bangladesh, Vietnam, Honduras and Nicaragua. Maité Rodríguez Blandón María Teresa Coordinator, Women and Peace Network She is the Director of Fundacion Guatemala. She leads the Women and Peace Network in Central America with grassroots women s organizations from Nicaragua, Guatemala, El Salvador, Costa Rica and Honduras. For over 10 years she worked directly with grassroots women's movements struggling for land rights, women's rights and safer cities for women. She is member of the Women and Habitat Network of Latin America. She is a member of the Coordinating Council of the Huairou Commission, and also served on the UNDP Gender Expert Task Force, UNDP Gender Unit. Martin Bryant Professor, Victoria University of Wellington He is a Programme Director at Landscape Architecture Programme, Director at Wraight and Associates. Researcher in the fields of Resilience and Urban Planning and Design, Design research, Structures in landscape Architecture, Earthquake cities of the pacific rim. Wellington Civic trust award for open space innovation. 5 Monika Zimmermann Deputy Secretary general, Local Governments for Sustainability She has worked as researcher on sustainable urban development, journalist and organizer of the first environment conferences for German local governments. She also served as member of national and European boards of NGOs coalitions. She holds a Master degree in political and administrative sciences of the Free University Berlin and has studied journalism in addition. She has published and edited various books, founded and edited environmental magazines and publishes frequently on urban issues. Patricia Chaves Executive Director, Espaço Feminista She worked as a consultant for United Nations Development Program, Inter American Institute for Agricultural Cooperation, IFAD project director. She s also a constultant to Minister of Agrarian Development of brazil. Rabia Ferroukhi Senior Programme Officer Policy Advice & Deputy Directory, Knowledge, Policy and Finance Centre (KPFC) IRENA She holds PhD in Economics from the American University, Washington DC. She s the Deputy Director at Knowledge, Policy and Finance Center and head of Policy at IRENA; Consultant in the fields such as energy Economics, renewable energy policy, and energy related regulatory and institutional issues,

institutional capacity building for European commission, World Bank. Seiyong Kim Professor, Korea University He is a Doctor of Engineering from Korea University and holds a Master degree from Colombia University. Currently an advisor for the Mayor's Office at Seoul City, Principal at CURE (Center for Urban regeneration and Education). He has also hold the position of Member of National Urban Planning Committee, Coordinator at the Urban Design Workshop in Milano and Tutor at the Urban Design Workshop in Taipei. Tadashi Matsumoto Project Manager, Division Public Governance and Territorial Development Directorate, OECD He is a Project Manager at Green Growth/Knowledge Sharing Southeast Asia. Author of the OECD publication Compact City Policies. Engaged in urban Planning, Housing and Building Policies at Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism. Holds masters in Urban Planning from New York University and PhD From Tokyo University. Lecturer at Tsukuba University. Trond Vedeld Senior Development Researcher, Norwegian Institute for Urban and Regional Researcher He holds a PhD in societal planning, development studies, institutional theory, property rights, sociology, natural resources management. He works the World Bank staff, Africa region - Fragile States, Conflict & Social Development Unit. Specialized in analysis of state society relationship, public administration/governance and social and institutional analysis. More recently he worked on governance of urban issues in Africa. 6
