Vocabulary Themes - The subject of a talk, piece of writing, painting; a topic. Shepherd - A person who tends and raises sheep. Witness - A person who sees an event take place. Self-Portrait - A portrait that an artist produces of themselves. Autobiography - An account of a person's life written by that person. 3
Statue - A carved or cast figure of a person or animal, especially one that is life-size or larger. Composition - A creative work, especially a poem or piece of music. Adapted - Make (something) suitable for a new use or purpose; modify. Nuclear Attack An attack when nuclear weapons are used. (weapons that use nuclear energy). Cross - A mark, object, or figure formed by two short intersecting lines or pieces (+ or ). 4
What is a Masterpiece? A masterpiece is a work of art such as a painting, film, or book that is made with great skill. We have learnt what are the different types of art forms and in this topic, we will learn about some famous sculptors, painters, musicians and architects that are considered to have created masterpieces which have changed the world. 5
1] Paintings: Rembrandt Rembrandt was a Dutch painter who did portraits, landscapes, historical paintings and more. Religion is one of the main themes in his paintings. A self-portrait by Rembrandt This scene in The Adoration of the Shepherds shows the shepherds arriving to witness the birth of baby Jesus in Bethlehem. 6
Leonardo da Vinci Leonardo da Vinci was an inventor, painter, sculptor and musician. People consider him as one of the greatest painters in the world. The Mona Lisa is one of the most famous paintings in the world. You can stand anywhere in front of the painting, either to the right or the left; or even in the center, but the woman in the painting appears to be looking at you. Her eyes seem to follow you! St. John the Baptist was Leonardo da Vinci s last painting. 7
2] Sculpture: Michelangelo Michelangelo was an Italian sculptor, painter, architect and poet. He was the first person to have an autobiography published when he was still alive. Most artists had their autobiographies published after their deaths. Called Moses, this sculpture is situated in Rome, Italy. It is a sculpture of Moses from the Bible. Called Angel, this is a marble statue of an angel. 8
Auguste Rodin Auguste Rodin was a French sculptor. He left art for a period of time because he could not get into a famous art college. They thought he was not skilled enough to attend their college. The Man With The Broken Nose was originally called Portrait of M. Many people originally did not like this painting as they thought it was ugly. Originally called The Poet, The Thinker takes inspiration from Michelangelo's sculptures. 9

3] Music: Beethoven Ludwig Van Beethoven was a German pianist and composer. He hated when people would talk during his performances and he often ended the performance if anyone did not give him their full attention. Some of his famous compositions include Sonata No. 14, also famously called as Moonlight Sonata, so called because he composed it at night; and another composition called Für Elise. 11
Ritchie Valens Ritchie Valens, was an American singer, songwriter and guitarist. His career lasted only eight months, as it ended when he died in a plane crash when he was only 17. He had several hits during this time, including "La Bamba which he had adapted from a Mexican folk song and Come on, Let s go. 12
4] Buildings: Zaha Hadid Zaha Hadid, was an Iraqi-born British architect. She received many awards for her constructions, and was the first woman to receive the Pritzker Architecture Prize, in 2004. The Vitra Fire Station in Germany was one of the first structures built by Zaha Hadid and it is one of the most famous fire stations in the world. The Bridge Pavilion in Spain is a bridge that was designed for an international fair in 2008. 13
Kenzō Tange Kenzō Tange was a Japanese architect, and winner of the 1987 Pritzker Prize for architecture. One of the most important architects of the 20 th century, Tange's work influenced a generation of architects across the world. Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park Located in the center of Hiroshima, Japan, it is dedicated to the memory of Hiroshima as the first city in the world to suffer a nuclear attack during a war. St. Mary's Cathedral Located in Tokyo, it is built in the shape of a cross. 14
