Access Statement for British Golf Museum Introduction The British Golf Museum is a five star Museum situated in St Andrews. The Museum contains the largest collection of golf memorabilia in Europe. It tells the story of the development of golf beginning in Scotland and spreading across the world from the 15th century to the present day. The public galleries are all on the ground floor of the Museum and there is an 80 seat Café upstairs, accessed by stairs or a lift from ground level or via an external staircase on the Bruce Embankment. Alternatively you can plan your journey by car or public transport using www.transportdirect.info; simply enter your postcode and ours, which is KY16 9AB to get directions. The nearest railway station is Leuchars which is 7.5 miles (12.07k) away. Buses and taxis are available at the station. The bus station is 0.2 miles (0.3k) from the museum. The museum is built on flat ground but there is a slight incline from the main road.
Car Parking and Arrival There is a public car park next to the museum, which has 169 car parking spaces, 1 motorcycle space and 4 clearly marked Blue Badge spaces The nearest Blue Badge bay is 50m from the entrance and the furthest is 76m from the entrance. There is a pay and display charge from 1 April to 30 September. 4 Blue Badge spaces are free of charge. The car park surface is tarmac. The car park is lit at night. There is a drop off point on the road next to the car park, there is no dropped kerb. There are 7 steps leading down to the main entrance with hand rails. There is a permanent ramp with hand rails on both sides. The main entrance doors are automatic and are 1550mm/61ins wide
Main Entrance, Reception and Ticketing Area The main entrance and ticket area is situated on the ground floor with step free level access throughout. The floor surface is slate tiles which have a slightly uneven textured surface. The area is evenly and well lit with overhead fluorescent and LED lights. There is a lowered section of the ticket/shop desk. Pen and pad of paper are available at desk.
Attraction (displays, exhibits, etc.) There are interactive touch screen activities throughout the museum, which can be accessed from a sitting or standing position. The storyboards throughout the galleries are in large text. The majority of the exhibits are held in glass cabinets which are mostly upright. There is background noise/music from the interactives that can be heard throughout the museum. There is seating at intervals around the museum. The floor surface starts of as linoleum and then changes to short pile carpet. The lighting is subdued in the first and last galleries. the rest of the galleries are lit by LED and spotlights in the ceiling. All the cabinets are well lit. The last gallery has a small putting area, access is 112mm/44ins and the surface is carpeted. We encourage people to have a shot with clubs and balls from different eras.
Public Toilets Public toilets are located on the ground floor opposite the reception desk accessed via a corridor. The corridor door is 940mm/37ins wide. There is a separate unisex accessible toilet. The door to the toilet is 910mm/36ins. Transfer space is to the left of the toilet. The toilet height is 480mm/19ins. There is horizontal and vertical rails on the wall adjacent to the toilet. A red emergency pull cord. The floor covering is slate tiles. The walls are white tiles. The toilet and sink are white. The toilet is well lit. There are lever taps on the sink.
Catering The café is situated on the first floor and can be accesses via external and internal stairway or lift. There are 22 external steps with handrails on both sides. The surface is paving slab. The terraced area is paved with slab. There is wooden benches and tables. The entrance door from the terrace measures 1000mm/39ins. On the internal stairs there are 9 stairs covered in slate tiles a landing with wood flooring and then a further 17 stairs covered in wood. There is a lift from the ground floor to the café the door width is 1000mm/39ins and the depth of the lift is 1400mm/56ins. The floor surface in the café is wooden. The café is well lit with natural and overhead lights. The café furniture is light coloured wood chairs and wooden tables with dark surfaces. There is table service in the café. We do our best to cater for dietary needs; please contact us in advance to check any specific requests you may have. There is music played in the café.
Shop(s) The shop is on the ground floor. The shop and reception share the same counter. There is a low counter area. The floor covering is slate tiles some of which have an uneven texture. The shop is well lit with natural daylight, overhead and spot lights. The items are displayed on slat wall and floor gondolas. There is ample room within the shop for wheelchairs and pushchairs. There is background noise for museum interactives. Staff will offer assistance when required.
