A sand bar five miles long and two hundred yards wide separate the salt water of the Bay of Mal Bay from the fresh water of the Portgage, Beatty and Main (Mal Bay) Rivers that run through an inland lagoon of marshes in Bridgeville and join together at Barachois to empty through a narrow channel into the Bay of Mal Bay of the Bay of Chaleur. Barachois is at the East end of the sand bar. Corner of the Beach is at the West end. It is about a mile long. Travelling from east to west, its flatland gives rise to a gentle incline about a third of a mile long that leads into a gorge on the highway and the next community of Canne des Roches (Rocky Canyon.) As you go up the incline, it gently starts to slope off toward the ocean, being more pronounced near the top of the incline. As the incline at the highway gives way to the gorge of Cannes des Roches, the gentle slope to the sea begins to slope towards a small brook followed by a massive sheer wall many hundreds of feet high of a mountain range that is about five miles long to Perce Village. Some time during the late 1950's or early 1960's I went to see a musical in Montreal that I've long forgotten except for one thing - Fernando's Hide Away. Ever since, when I pass or visit this piece of land, I think about Fernando's Hide Away. My Fernando's Hide Away was the west half of the property owned by Will Mabe. When Will died, he willed it to his sister Lucy with provisions that the property ultimately end up with my first cousins Shirley, Gary and Earle Mabe. When Lucy Mabe died, she willed it to My Aunt Luena, mother of Shirley, Gary and Earle Mabe. Jacques Coderre, Judge for the Quebec Circuit Court, now retired and living in Perce talked Aunt Lu into selling to him the western half of the property that I think of as Fernando's Hide Away.
