The Architectural Engineering research group specialises in social infrastructure - particularly healthcare and education buildings - focusing on the development and application of science to support service delivery as it pertains to immovable asset procurement, design, construction, operation, maintenance and strategic planning. This work focuses on the South African context for social and technical sustainability. The research group is involved in several active contract and parliamentary grant funded research and development projects. Peta s role has included project conceptualisation, preparation of project proposals, inception, management, reporting and review. She has initiated a Post Occupancy Evaluation for IDIP for Western Cape Primary Health Care Facilities; prepared a specialised brief for a forensic pathology laboratory for the Western Cape Provincial Department of Health; and provided technical assistance for multi drug resistant and extensively drug resistant tuberculosis facilities programme (the Global Fund). The Building Performance Laboratory is a competence located in the research group. This uses computational fluid dynamics, energy modelling and on-site measuring studies to predict and validate building performance. These technologies are applied to support decision making for, amongst other things airborne infection risk and mitigation studies and to promote sustainable energy use. Peta has made numerous contributions to conferences and publications as author and co-author, both nationally and internationally. Formerly a lecturer and tutor at the University of Witwatersrand and currently presenting short modules, mentoring occasional students, and external examiner, Peta has extensive experience in the academic field and in human capital development. As a practicing architect in her early career, Peta undertook several building projects as design architect and project manager, both on her own and as a team member. Research projects: 2007- present
