Yusuf Hamied Theatre Yusuf Hamied Centre, Ground floor The Yusuf Hamied Theatre is located in the Yusuf Hamied Centre in New Court. Renovated a few years ago the theatre is now a stylish auditorium seating 119 delegates theatre style. With additional free standing seats at the front of the room the theatre can seat up to130 delegates. The room is well equipped with up-to-date audio visual equipment and an efficient air cooling system. The building was formally known as the Lasdun building as it was designed by architect Sir Denys Lasdun in the early 1960s and fully refurbished in 2009. The room is bright and airy and overlooks the Darwin garden and is ideal as a breakout room seating up to 24 delegates in a U shape. Function Room Yusuf Hamied Centre, Lower ground floor (Lift Access) Located close to the Yusuf Hamied Theatre it makes an ideal area for registration by conference groups, for tea and coffee break times or drinks receptions. The room can also be used as additional meeting space and/or as a relaxation area for delegates or guests to use in an evening. Despite it's basement location the room is easily accessible by a lift between the lower and ground floor area, making it easily accessible for disabled visitors. Plumb Auditorium (2nd floor) The Auditorium was originally built as the Council Chamber of the former County Hall, acquired by the College in 1983. The room was named in honour of Sir John Plumb, FBA (1911-2001), eminent scholar, Professor of Modern English History, Fellow of Christ's (1946-1978), and Master (1978-1982). During the Second World War he worked as an analyst on the ULTRA signals intelligence operation at Bletchley Park. Plumb was a prolific writer, and a major authority on the Stuart and Georgian periods of English history. Location The Plumb Auditorium is located on the top floor of the Todd Building (Z staircase). Sosnow Room (2nd floor) Alternative room layout Breakout area for refreshments 40-50 SPIRAL The Room was named in 1987 in memory of Norman Sosnow, who matriculated in 1962 and graduated in 1965. Tragically he lost his life in an aircraft accident in 1967 at the age of 23. The Room also commemorates the work and generosity given to Christ's College by his father, Eric Sosnow. Born in Poland, he came to London in 1934 as a research assistant at the London School of Economics. In 1968 Eric Sosnow and his wife sought to keep alive the memory of their son in the College which he loved by endowing the Norman Sosnow Travel Scholarships. Eric Sosnow was a Fellow-Commoner from 1982 until his death in 1987. The Hall The Hall, one of the finest amongst the Cambridge Colleges, dates from 1857-1879 with fine stained glass panels, making it a unique historic setting for lunch, dinner or a banquet. There is seating for up to one hundred and ten delegates in the main body of the room and a further twenty can be seated in the gallery above. It can also be used for buffet/receptions for groups of up to one hundred and fifty. Whilst the Hall is a stunning setting in daylight, its true beauty can be fully appreciated in the evening with candlelit tables and soft lighting. Mountbatten Room This is an elegant dining room, named after one of Christ s famous alumni, Lord Louis Mountbatten. With seating for up to twenty this is an ideal setting for a small lunch party or intimate candlelit dinner in complete privacy. Mountbatten Room Earl Mountbatten of Burma. A Christ s College student in 1919, Louis Mountbatten, a great grandson of Queen Victoria played a key role as chief of Combined Operations Command in the preparations of the D-Day landings. Dining Rooms As Supreme Commander of forces in South-East Asia he successfully defeated the Japanese offensive into India and received the Japanese surrender at Singapore. He served as Britain s last Viceroy of India and subsequently held a series of top positions in the the British Armed Forces, including Chief of the Defence Staff. Old Combination Room (OCR) A delightful room, panelled with pine, giving the room a warm, rich feel. It is an ideal setting for formal dinners for the smaller conference, seating up to thirty six delegates. It can also be used for a buffet/reception for up to fifty five delegates.
