William Cuthbert MANSSEN service number 17794 Gunner 2 nd Battalion Canterbury Infantry Regiment NZ Field Artillery enlisted Featherston on 05-04-1916, left NZ for overseas duty on 26-07-1916, saw duty in France and returned on Maunganui departing 19 03-1918 and was discharged on 07-01-1919 after a total of 2 years 278 days duty. Discharged no longer physically fit for war service on account of illness contacted on Active Service (Pulmonary Tubercle). He spent some time in Brockenhurst hospital England. His wife and family stayed in Nelson. William Cuthbert MANSSEN age 37 born Nelson occupation Labourer died 09 March 1927 Kawatiri Murchison district. Cause of death Coroners verdict: That the deceased William Cuthbert MANSSEN met his death on the night of 08 March 1927 by drowning in the Buller River of Kawatiri there being no evidence to show how he got in the water. His parent s were Emma formerly MARRIS and Charles Frederick MANSSEN occupation Labourer. He was buried 11 March 1927, at Nelson cemetery (Wakapuaka) by Church of England minister Rev John B DART. William was age 25 when he married Inez RICKETTS in Nelson. His widow was age 37 and his living issue were 1 male age 11 years and 1 female age 7 years. W C ROBERTSON agent authorised in writing by Coroner Murchison registered the death on 11 March 1927. The registrar was H PATTERSON. (Reference RGO NZ death registration 1927 folio 591 line 3 Murchison district) I transcribed some of the details from the Coroner s report. Conrad Marris MANSSEN identified the body as his brother William Cuthbert MANSSEN. Conrad said that William had a nervous breakdown and as a result was an inmate at Porirua mental Hospital for about three months that was two years ago. Six people gave evidence all said that he was okay except one. William had worked at Kawatiri for 12 months at the Public Works Department were the inquest was held. On the night of the 8 th William had been playing cards with others in their huts and he complained of a headache, excused himself from the card game and retired to his hut. It was a very hot night. When they went to call him in the morning he wasn t in his hut but the bed had been slept in. He was not at breakfast. When he failed to turn up for work a fellow worker went to look for him and found him face down in about five to six feet of water in the river at the back of the camp. He pulled him out from the river but he was very cold and was dead. He had been there for a long time. Stones were in his coat pocket. The corners verdict was: That the deceased William Cuthbert MANSSEN met his death on the night of 08 March 1927 by drowning in the Buller River of Kawatiri there being no evidence to show how he got in the water.
