President s Report For Bulletin #16 Last week, our members enjoyed another interesting presentation from our Guest Speaker, Peter Reid who spoke with passion and conviction about his craft of making strings musical instruments. Peter brought to the meeting two violins, a viola and a cello that he had made and he explained all the steps in making an instrument. In 1998 Peter made a copy of a Stradivarius violin for one of his children and by the time Peter had made his 7th musical instrument it was at a standard that was good enough to sell. Peter s instruments are now at such a high standard that most of them are sold to professional musicians. Ricardo requires transportation to the next Youth Exchange briefing weekend to be held at Borambola Sport and Recreation Centre at Wagga Wagga on 23rd and 24th November. If you are able to assist, would you please see Austin Morgan. Another participant at the briefing weekend will provide the transport for Ricardo back to Orange. Our club s AGM has been set for 21st November where we will be electing the nominees to the Board for 2014-15. Austin has a nomination for the position of Vice President/Administration but other positions on the Board need to be filled. If you are interested in nominating for a position or require clarification on the roles of the Board positions, please see Austin. Neal Fogarty will be our Guest Speaker on 31st October and his presentation will be on the Lisbon RI Convention which was held in June. This will be a ladies night and as we will not be have a meeting on 24th October due to the Field Days, we will be taking the names of those who wish to attend the ladies night at this week s meeting. Enjoy your week, Paul Derrig

Ricardo is now back at school. He has moved this past week from the Fogarty s back to Steve and Janet Jackson s home, before soon making another move to the Ecclestons on their return to Australia. If anyone is going to the Bathurst races, Ricardo would like to go. Your say: - Dr. Bernie Huxtable Using slides, Bernie gave us the good and bad news on birds. 1) The good news is that a night parrot, thought to be nearly extinct, has been spotted and photographed. 2) The bad news is that on the opening day of the Victorian shooting season, the following birds were shot and later identified:- Banded Stilt, Black Swan, Dotterel, Eurasian Coot, Great Crested Grebe, Pink Eared Duck (500 of these), Red Necked Avocet, Royal Spoonbill, and Whistling Kite not at all good news. Fines Session: Sergeant John Rae and Corporal Michael Horth did well to extract $39.30 from the 21 members present. Guest Speaker: David Provost introduced Peter Reid. Peter is an instrument maker who moved to Orange from Bathurst in 2001. At High School, Peter wanted to do woodwork (not a subject), and then over the next 15 years, had a career in electrical and mechanical engineering. He had always had an interest in making musical instruments, and in 1988, he was working at the home of a Czech migrant in Mount Victoria, who also happened to be a violin maker. This chance meeting enthused Peter even more to become an instrument maker. In 2001, Peter started teaching woodwork at Kinross Wolaroi School. In his spare time, Peter did repairs to musical instruments.

In 2007, Peter started up his own business, with his first job using Oregon timber to make a violin. Peter brought a whole range of timber and violins, viola, and a cello to complement his very dedicated and thorough talk. He described the manner in which the moulds for the instruments are made, which helped to highlight the precision work that is necessary to make a first class handmade musical instrument. He described the timber used in making a cello which was on display (and also sold today). The cello had been made out of German maple and Australian Spruce Top. Some instruments are made out of a very rare King William pine, only found in Tasmania, with the wood on display coming from a tree that had been burnt in a fire. It takes some 120 150 hours to make a violin. Cellos take up to 3 months to make, and double bass up to 4 months. Peter mainly makes sales to professional musicians. Peter answered a whole range of questions from members who had been captivated by a very inspiring address. Peter was thanked by John McKenzie the meeting closed at 8.25pm. Notes
