Annex I Palácio Sinel de Cordes - History Sinel de Cordes Palace, located in Campo de Santa Clara, presents an ample main façade facing south and the Boto Machado garden, while the east wing of this rectangular-plan building is turned to the Travessa do Conde de Avintes. Spread over two main floors, the palace presents a dramatic sequence of large windows culminating in triangular attics. On the slightly salient central body two large main doors are located, atop a cropped veranda standing on corbels onto which three doors opne. The building is crowned by a balustrade and the points of intersection of the façades planes are decorated with neoclassic statues on buttresses. The statues are of a similar style to those found in Ajuda Palace. Sinel de Cordes palace is a palatial construction from the eighteenth-century commissioned by the Sinel de Cordes family. According to genealogists, this family originally from the Flemish nobility arrived in Portugal in the beginning of the seventeenth-century, during the reign of Filipe III. João Baptista Cordes established himself in Lisbon and worked as a treasurer for the Royal Tax. Amongst his descendents were several knights of the Order of Christ, related to the Holy Office of the Inquisition and aristocrats from the Royal House. The family first lived at Rua Direito do Loreto ao Camões, and some time after the 1755 earthquake they moved permanently to the Sinel de Cordes palace. Around the nineteenth-century the building was bought by Dr. José Correia Godinho da Costa (1787-1869), who was the first viscount of Correia Godinho and Judge of the Supreme Military Court. Godinho da Costa introduced the ornaments, such as the balustrade and the statutes that decorate the palace's façade. Also, the neo-gothic ornamentation in the interior stairway that gives access to the first floor was added during the same period. In the beginning of the twentieth-century the palace hosted the Italian Legacy, and during that era, a violent fire destroyed most of its interior, that was later rebuilt. The stuccos with nature motifs on the first floor's main rooms, are also from this time. From the 1930s onwards the palace began to function as an elementary school, an occupation that continued until around the 2000s.
