Students celebrated the 100th day of school on Friday, February 12th at St. Barbara School. First graders read The Night Before the 100th Day of School, by Natasha Wing and the students came to school dressed up as 100 year old people. First graders wore wigs, top hats and glasses and brought in canes. Each first grade student counted out 100 items at home and brought them into school. The items included 100 chocolate kisses, 100 marbles, 100 playing cards and 100 pieces of pasta. The class then used a balance to weigh the items and figure out if they were greater than, less than or equal to each other. Second graders came to school dressed with 100 items on their clothing. Some students glued 100 cotton balls to their shirt, 100 puzzle pieces to their sweater and 100 paper clips to their hat. Youth Group to Sponsor Blood Drive on Saturday, March 6th The St. Gabriel Parish Youth Group is organizing a Blood Drive on Saturday, March 6th, from 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. in the School Hall. We will be working in conjunction with Heartland Blood Centers, who meet the needs of patients in 35 hospitals in the Greater Chicagoland area. There is an urgent need for blood every day of the year and the Youth Group is taking this on as a special Lenten project. If you are looking for something extra to do for Lent, please consider giving the gift of life by donating blood here. Donating blood is a simple process that takes less than one hour of your time. Eligible donors should weigh at least 110 pounds, be 17 years (16 with parental permission) of age or older and be in good health. Our neighborhood has a well-deserved reputation of reaching out to those in need, and we are asking for your assistance in making this blood drive successful. We are asking for your help in two ways - 1. Spread the word about this blood drive to your family, friends, and neighbors and encourage them to be a donor. 2. Call the rectory at 773-268-9595 to get an appointment time for yourself to donate blood. We are also planning on being at all the weekend Masses on Feb. 27-28, to sign parishioners up for appointment times to give blood. If you have any questions about the blood drive, please contact Fr. Rich. There is no way to peace. Peace is the way. A. J. Muste (1885-1967) Pacifist & civil rights leader An ounce of love is worth a pound of knowledge. Jennifer (24/7) 312-972-1111 Armour Park News In 1949, the Park District organized a Junior Officials Program that later became the foundation of today s Junior Citizen Program. These candidates must be a high school junior or senior that show active involvement in leadership roles in their schools, parks and various community activities. The selection begins at Area 5, then Central Region competition and finally winners are selected to represent the Park District in the city-wide Junior Citizen contest. Armour Square Park proudly presents the Junior Citizens chosen from Area 5. They are: Lauren Madia is a Senior at DeLaSalle Institute - Lourdes Hall and Sterling Carrington a Senior at St. Rita High School. Both nominees will compete at the Region level and their families will attend a Regional Awards Banquet. Both Lauren & Sterling exhibit leadership qualities and academic goals to make them both a recipient of the Junior Citizen Program 2010. Congratulations & good luck on your future endeavors! Curves Hosts Food Drive to Benefit Local Families Curves, at 3252 S. Wallace, is encouraging women in the local area to show their philanthropic strength by participating in the annual Curves Food Drive. Even though donating food to families in need is its own reward, the club is offering compelling incentives for both existing and potential members who participate. From March 1st to the 31st, Curves will collect non-perishable items and monetary donations for food banks in the local area. The goal, according to Curves Founder Diane Heavin, is for the community to come together to help families in need. At the core of our business is the message that women are stronger when they rally together, and that is the point we hope to bring home with our food drive, said Heavin. We want to show our communities just how powerful the generosity of our members can be. According to Heavin, members who donate a bag of groceries or make a minimum donation of 30 during the month of March will receive a reusable Curves grocery freezer bag for free. Nonmembers who do likewise between March 8th and 20th can join Curves for free. Curves will waive the cost to join. The Curves locations in our area will be participating in a company-wide contest for the most food drive donations collected across the nation. Winners will receive one of several cash prizes to be donated to their local food bank. Each year, Curves locations collectively donate millions of pounds of food to feed the hungry. For more information about the Curves Food Drive, contact Char-maine Gagen, Curves of Chicago located at 3252 South Wallace, at 312-881-0141 or 9ZOGXZML@curves mail.com.
