NEW RESIDENTS ROOM & ROOMMATE SELECTION FOR 2017-18 PART ONE: CHECK HOUSING PREFERENCE STATUS & SEARCH FOR ROOMMATES JANUARY 23 Portal Opens The online housing portal opens at 8 a.m. on January 23, 2017. At that time, you can check your housing status, search for roommates, and invite and accept roommate requests. In part two when you select your room, you ll only be able to pull in roommates from your Accepted Roommates list in the online housing portal who haven t selected a room already. We recommend you secure your roommates before room selection opens in part two of the process to save time during room selection. See page 3 for detailed instructions. Your preferred roommates must have the same housing preference as you. For example, students interested in the Engineering Res College can request other students who are also interested in the Engineering Res College. If you indicated a preference to live in traditional housing options, you ll only be able to search for and invite roommates who are also interested in traditional housing options. Follow the steps on page 13 to check your housing preference. PART TWO: CHOOSE ROOM & PULL IN ROOMMATES/SUITEMATES MARCH & APRIL You will gain access to the online housing portal to select your room and pull in roommates/suitemates into your room/suite according to the schedule below, based on the date you completed your housing application and paid advance rent. View the exact day and time during your group s week that you can select your room in the housing portal via mylsu > Student Services > On-Campus Housing in Application Status. The information will also be emailed to you. If you haven t started the application or invited and accepted roommates as indicated in part one, you can do that in this part or you may continue on without preferred roommates. The online system will remain open through April 14, 2017. We strive to get students one of their top choices on campus. The system will reopen on April 17, 2017 for students interested in placing themselves on a waitlist. Get waitlist details on page 14. Room Selection Schedule For New Residents IF YOU COMPLETED YOUR HOUSING APPLICATION: YOU WILL CHOOSE YOUR ROOM: (CST) September 30 - October 15, 2016 GROUP 1 October 16 - November 15, 2016 GROUP 2 November 16 - December 31, 2017 GROUP 3 January 1, 2017 - Present GROUP 4 Waitlists Open ALL GROUPS March 6 (4 p.m.) - March 10 (10 a.m.) March 13 (4 p.m.) - March 17 (10 a.m.) March 20 (4 p.m.) - March 24 (10 a.m.) April 10 (4 p.m.) - April 14 (10 a.m.) April 17 at 4 p.m. Room Changes ALL GROUPS April 24-28 and May 22-26 ** View the exact day and time during your group s week that you can select your room in the housing portal via mylsu > Student Services > On-Campus Housing in Application Status. ** 1 NEW RESIDENT ROOM/ROOMMATE GUIDE 17-18

THE FINE PRINT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU SELECT YOUR ROOM GENERAL INFORMATION The housing portal is accessed via mylsu > Student Services > On-Campus Housing. A heavy volume of students logged on to the housing portal will cause your network connection to become slower than normal. Please be persistent by logging off and trying again. You will get a room assignment. You must have a completed 2017-18 housing application on file to participate in the online room selection process. Contracts are for the academic year, both fall and spring semesters. If you cancel your housing application/room assignment, you are subject to the cancellation fee schedule available at lsu.edu/cancelhousing. See page 15 for details and familiarize yourself with the cancellation policies. Students who cancel with LSU Admissions must also cancel with the Department of Residential Life. Students registered through the Office of Disability Services for accommodations should contact the Department of Residential Life at 225-578-8663, so that we can assist you with your fall assignment. If at any time there is a need to reschedule the online process, residents will be notified through their mylsu e-mail accounts. Residential Life staff in Grace King Hall will be available Monday-Friday 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. to assist. ROOMMATES/SUITEMATES Even if you know who you want your roommate to be, you must go into the system and accept each other as roommates. Accepting someone as a roommate in part one of the process does not guarantee you will be roommates in a room. While we do our best to accommodate preferences, not all requests can be honored. You ll only be able to pull in roommates/suitemates from your Accepted Roommates list in the online housing portal who haven t selected a room already. Be sure to have your preferred roommates/suitemates listed on your Accepted Roommates list so they ll show as roommate/suitemate options when you select your room. Only once you and your roommate/suitemates are confirmed in the room/suite are you officially roommates/suitemates. Check your housing preference and following the steps on page 13. If you request to change your housing preference by emailing reslife@lsu.edu, the potential roommates you see may change. Honors students have priority in the Laville Honors House. If space is available in late summer, we will allow Honors House students to have non-honors roommates. Honors students may request non-honors roommates by emailing reslife@lsu.edu. If you prefer a random roommate assignment, simply do not accept or request any roommates on the roommate finder section of the online housing portal. If you are invited by someone to be their roommate in their room, accept or decline by the end of your selection period time frame, usually 10 a.m. After 10 a.m., any invitations not accepted will be purged to make room for other students looking for available spaces. Residential Life does not utilize your personal profile in the Roommate Finder to match you with your roommate. It is only a tool we provide to you for finding your roommate in our system. ROOM SELECTION/ASSIGNMENT Only one assignment can be reserved during the online room selection process. If you need to make a change, you can wait until the room change process opens according to the schedule on page 1, follow the instructions on page 14 to add your name to a building s waitlist, or work with the Res Life Assignments Staff in Grace King Hall. Students who do not select their hall/room by April 14, 2017, will have their room assignments made by the Res Life staff. Floor plans and room layouts for every building are located on each building s web page at lsu.edu/housing. See page 6 for a complete list of details to know about room selection. 2 NEW RESIDENT ROOM/ROOMMATE GUIDE 17-18

PART ONE: ROOMMATES PART ONE: SEARCH FOR ROOMMATES The roommate finder section of the online housing portal will be available at 8 a.m. on Monday, January 23, 2017. This is where you can search for compatible roommates, invite students to room with you, and confirm or decline those roommate requests. In part two when you select your room or apartment, you ll only be able to pull in unassigned roommates who you ve accepted as roommates in the housing portal prior to room selection. Here s a step-by-step guide: LOG IN Log In the Housing Portal (mylsu > Student Services > On-Campus Housing ) Click on the Application tab on the home page of the housing portal to get started. Select the correct term: (RH/E/W - Fall 2017) - Res Halls/East/West Campus Apt- Fall 2017 Click on the circle in the Progress Bar for Personal Profile. Here it is listed as step 8 in our application, but yours may be a different number depending on your specific application. This is the first page in the roommate matching and requesting service. Complete the steps below: PERSONAL PROFILE Include In Search: This box is checked by default to include you in other students roommate searches. If you do not want students to be able to search for you or see how compatible you are as roommates, uncheck this box. Screen Name: Your screen name is your PAWS ID. Description: You can enter a brief description of yourself here for potential roommates to see. Save: When you re done, click Save & Continue. PERSONAL PREFERENCES Enter your personal preferences about your room environment, sleep habits, music preferences, and more. Your answers will help match you with potential roommates. You can come back to this section and change your answers until April 14, 2017. You may contact Res Life after that time to make any changes. 3 NEW RESIDENT ROOM/ROOMMATE GUIDE 17-18

PART ONE: ROOMMATES, CONTINUED You are now in the Roommate Finder section of the housing portal. Search for roommates in the Roommate Finder and invite and accept roommate requests. You can come back to this section to amend your roommate requests, accept or decline roommate requests, or search for roommates through April 14, 2017. In part two when you select your room or apartment, you ll only be able to pull in unassigned roommates listed in your Accepted Roommates shown on page 5. Remember you ll only be able to search for students in the same type of housing as you. Review the information on pages 2 and 13 of this guide for details if you are unsure. When navigating in the Roommate Finder, please click on the circle buttons on the Progress Bar rather than using your browser s back button. ROOMMATES: See the next page (p. 6) for an example of the Roommate page. Review the important Roommate Information at the top of the page. Suggested Roommates: Based on your answers in the Personal Profile section, your most compatible roommate options appear here. You can View Their Profile, Send a Message through the housing portal, or Request them as a roommate. Accepted Roommates: If you send a roommate request to a student and they accept that request to be your roommate, they will appear in your list of accepted roommates. You can have up to three Accepted Roommates. These are the only people you will be able to invite into your room, suite or apartment when you select your room/apartment in the next steps. Requested Roommates: When you send a request, it will appear here until the student accepts or declines your request. You will also receive a message through the portal (top right hand corner) when someone accepts or declines your roommate request. You can only have three outstanding roommate requests at a time. If you send three requests out, one will have to decline your request or you will have to cancel one of your sent requests to be able to send out another request. If someone requests you as a roommate, the invitation will appear in this section for you to View Their Profile, Send a Message through the housing portal, or Accept or Decline the invitation. You will receive a message through the portal (top right hand corner) when someone invites, accepts, or declines your roommate request. Search for Roommates: Here you can search for roommates a few different ways: Browse Matching Roommates While the Suggested Roommates section only lists your top results, this section lets you browse potential roommates beyond those first few matches. Search By Details: PAWS ID or Age If you know who you want your roommate to be, you can simply enter their PAWS ID here to find and request them as a roommate. Search By Profile Questions If you want to see only early risers or only people who listen to jazz music, narrow down your field of potential roommates using this filter to search. ROOMMATE SELECTION PROCESS COMPLETE: When you ve reached this screen, you ve gone through all the steps of roommate search and selection. You can still access the roommate section of the process to change your roommates, view new requests, and more. 4 NEW RESIDENT ROOM/ROOMMATE GUIDE 17-18

PART ONE: ROOMMATES, CONTINUED See previous page for descriptions of each part of the Roommates section shown here. 5 NEW RESIDENT ROOM/ROOMMATE GUIDE 17-18

PART TWO: SELECT ROOM PART TWO: SELECT ROOM Helpful Tips for the Online Room Selection Process: Have a list of building preferences so you ll know which building and room to look for first. Review the steps in this guide to get comfortable with the process prior to logging in to the system. The system opens at 4 p.m. (central time) on the days indicated in the schedule. Once you have access to the online housing portal according to the schedule to the right, you will continue to have access to the system through April 14, 2017. View your day to select a room on the Application Status page in the housing portal. You will also receive the information via email. You can only make one room assignment in the online system. If you make a room assignment and want to change it, do not cancel your housing application as this will delete your application and you will lose your priority application date. If you need to make a room change, you can wait until the room change process opens according to the schedule on page 1, follow the instructions on page 14 to add your name to a building s waitlist, or work with the Res Life Assignments Staff in Grace King Hall by emailing reslife@lsu.edu. You may invite roommate(s) who are in a later group than you. Remember your roommates must be accepted in the roommate section of the housing portal and not already have a room assignment to be able to invite them into your room during online room selection. Be sure to search for, request and confirm roommates as described in this guide before you go online to select your room. You must select a room that has at least two available spaces (one for each student) in order to invite a roommate to a room. If there are not two spaces available in the room, you will not be able to invite your requested roommate to live in that room. For threestudent rooms and four-student rooms, you must make sure there are enough available bed spaces in the room to be able to invite specific roommates into that room. When a residential college program reaches the maximum number of students, a wait list for that individual residential college is started. For example, the Engineering Residential College (ERC) typically has a wait list because the number of students applying for the ERC exceeds the number of spaces (beds) available in the program. Many of the students on the res college wait lists get into res colleges as spaces become available throughout the summer, but the remainder of students all get spaces in the traditional halls. If you are not admitted into your preferred residential college by your assigned date to select your room online, you will still participate in the online room selection process to choose a space in a traditional hall. If a space opens up in your requested res college, you will be re-assigned to your requested residential college by our staff. Please be sure to check your email regularly. Res Life Assignments staff will not move a student to an available space unless we receive written communication verifying the move. In order to be most effective, these moves are time-sensitive and will require a response within 48 hours in most cases. Residential Life does its best to place you in your preferred housing option. Please be sure to login to your mylsu account and check your LSU email regularly to see updates to your room assignment or roommate/suite mate information. See page 14 for waitlist details. Room Selection Schedule For New Residents IF YOU COMPLETED YOUR HOUSING APPLICATION: September 30 - October 15, 2016 GROUP 1 October 16 - November 15, 2016 GROUP 2 November 16 - December 31, 2017 GROUP 3 January 1, 2017 - Present GROUP 4 Waitlists Open ALL GROUPS Room Changes ALL GROUPS YOU WILL CHOOSE YOUR ROOM: (CST) March 6 (4 p.m.) - March 10 (10 a.m.) March 13 (4 p.m.) - March 17 (10 a.m.) March 20 (4 p.m.) - March 24 (10 a.m.) April 10 (4 p.m.) - April 14 (10 a.m.) April 17 at 4 p.m. April 24-28 and May 22-26 ** View the exact day and time during your group s week that you can select your room in the housing portal via mylsu > Student Services > On-Campus Housing in Application Status. ** To see your room assignment, view your application status in the online housing portal via mylsu. View step-by-step instructions on page 15 of this guide. By the end of the last group s assigned days, there may not be a sufficient number of spaces accessible in the system for all remaining students to choose their room assignments at that time. Please be patient. This is a normal part of the assignment process, and these students will receive their room assignments as room cancellations come in, and holds on rooms for special programs are released. If you applied for housing before a standby list is implemented, you are guaranteed a space on campus. The online system time stamps the assignment made by each student. If two students try to select the same space, the earlier time stamp will be assigned. 6 NEW RESIDENT ROOM/ROOMMATE GUIDE 17-18

In this example, Beauregard Hall was selected. After you click on the building, a list of all rooms in that building appears. Scroll down the page to see more options. To select a room, simply click on the room and it will become highlighted. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click Save & Continue. Columns and Rooms: Each column represents a type of room: private rooms, two-student rooms, three-student rooms, four-student rooms, and other types reserved for special programs like ROTC. The numbers in the column represent how many available spaces there are in that room. In this example, Beauregard 0201 is a two-student room with two beds available. If there was a 1 in the column, that means one bed in that room has already been selected by another student. Make sure you select a room with enough spaces available for you and your preferred roommate(s). If there is only one bed space available in a two-student room, you will be assigned to that available bed space and will not be able to invite a roommate since there are no available bed spaces. That means the other bed in that room has already been selected by another student. In Beauregard 0203, that two-student room has two beds available, so no one has selected a space in that room yet. Make sure you select a room with enough spaces available for you and your preferred roommate(s). If there is only one bed space available in a two-student room, you will be assigned to that available bed space and will not be able to invite a roommate since there are no available bed spaces. In this example, McVoy 0429 is a female room (F) with 2 available bed spaces out of 2 total bed spaces in the room (2/2). To select the room, click on it so it becomes highlighted and then click Save & Continue. To go back to the list of rooms or buildings to select a different room, use the navigation Building>Floor>Rooms>Beds in the system rather than using your web browser s back button. Building: Brings you back to the list of buildings Floor: Brings you back to list of rooms in the building you last selected. All rooms will appear, not a singular floor in the building. If you select this room, the next screen asks you to assign the bed spaces in the room. First, select a bed space for yourself with the My Bed drop down menu. Now you are ready to assign roommates to available spaces in the room. Select a bed space for your roommate(s). REMEMBER: The only roommates you ll be able to pull in are those listed in your Accepted Roommates list in the housing portal who do not already have a room assignment. Go back to the Roommate button in the Progress Bar if you need to search for roommates. Your Accepted Roommates will show on this screen next to a drop down menu of the available bed spaces in your selected res hall room. You can pull in more than one roommate into your room if multiple bed spaces are available. You have five minutes (5:00) to complete this step. If you take longer than five minutes, the system will time out, you will have to start over, and the spaces will not be held for you or your roommates. Click Reserve Beds to complete the room assignment process and move on to the next step. Review your Application Status to see roommate information. Refer to page 13 for details on the Application/Housing Status screen. The roommates you invite into your room will receive an e-mail instructing them to log in to the housing portal and accept or decline your room invitation. Please remind your roommates to complete this step within 24 hours of receiving the e-mail. 11 NEW RESIDENT ROOM/ROOMMATE GUIDE 17-18

PART TWO: SELECT ROOM - ACCEPT OR DECLINE ROOM INVITATION How to Accept or Decline Room Invitation if you are pulled in (invited) into a res hall room or suite by a roommate/suitemate The only roommates you ll be able to pull in (invite) are those listed in your Accepted Roommates list in the housing portal who do not already have a room assignment. Go back to the Roommate button in the Progress Bar if you need to search for roommates. If one of your Accepted Roommates invites you into (called pull in ) an available space in a res hall room, you will receive an e-mail with the following instructions: Log in to the online housing portal outlined in the steps on page 7. Click on the Pull-In Confirmation screen, where you can view the details of the room assignment, including building and room number and any other roommates in that room. You have the option to Accept Invitation or Decline Invitation here. Please accept or decline this roommate invitation within 24 hours of receiving the notification e-mail. If you decline the invitation, you will not have a room assignment and can go back into the online housing portal and select a different room assignment according to the schedule on page 1. You will have access to select a room according to the date you completed your housing application. If you decline the room invitation, you will not be able to invite this person (who invited you into a room) into a different room while they are still assigned to this room. If you accept the invitation, as shown to the left, you will have your room assignment and can see details on the Applications Status page shown on the next page. Remember you can only make one room assignment in the online system. If you make a room assignment and want to change it, do not cancel your housing application as this will delete your application and you will lose your priority application date. To make a room change, work with our Res Life Assignments staff in Grace King Hall available at 225-578-8663 or reslife@lsu.edu. 12 NEW RESIDENT ROOM/ROOMMATE GUIDE 17-18
