Jerusalem Christian Church and Cemetery King William County, Virginia History The history of the Disciples of Christ as a unique Christian denomination probably goes back to 1807, when Thomas Campbell, a minister assigned to the Presbytery Charters in Washington, Pennsylvania, came to this country. By 1827 this community of Christians began to grow under the leadership of Thomas son, Alexander. By1831 the Campbells and others had organized several congregations in eastern Virginia. In 1832 there was a meeting of about 700 people at old Acquinton Church in King William County. This meeting eventually led to the formation of the congregation now known as Jerusalem Christian Church (Jerusalem). Instrumental in the early formation and growth of Jerusalem was Dr. John Duval, who soon gathered a group of interested people and preached for them in the Acquinton Church building. Before long these people wanted a meeting house of their own, and they began to plan where they could build a church. Dr. Duval was instrumental in getting funds, etc., to build Jerusalem. The land on which the church was built was given by Mrs. Harriet Clairborne Hill, who lived nearby. The bricks were given by Dr. John Skyren Lewis and James Ambrose White. These bricks were made on the doners plantations, Mount Rose and Green Level. The walls of the building are 18 inches thick. It was dedicated in 1840. The original entrance to the building was on the wall perpendicular to the current front, and parallel to the road. The pulpit was opposite the door. Except for this change, the church remained the same from 1840 to 1940. Since then there have been additions that are seen in the photograph. The first pastor was R. Y. Henley, and some of the charter families were named Lipscomb, Slaughter, Littlepage, Cobb, Pemberton, Mills, Corr, Hill and Robinson. History summarized from a longer, 1940 article by Mrs. James Burnette Hill. Loretta and Hawthorne Davis 2012
