Dit is Dinsdagoggend vasgestel toe die wrakke uiteindelik na n lang soektog gevind is. Gemoedere was laag en die weer mistroostig toe daar tydens n perskonferensie bevestig is dat daar geen oorlewendes van die 13 insittendes was nie. Die wrakke is om omstreeks 08:15 Dinsdagoggend in die Sekororo omgewing naby Lekgalameetse gevind. Die vliegtuie het Sondagoggend vanaf die vliegveld opgestyg in die rigting van die Randse lughawe. Volgens Hannes Steyn, van die rampbestuursentrum is daar geen "mayday s" ontvang nie en het die vliegtuie omstreeks 10:20 Sondag van die radar verdwyn. Na aanleiding van die ongeluks toneel word daar vermoed dat hulle in formasie gevlieg het en was sowat 100 tot 280 meter van mekaar af. Die berg waarteen hulle vasgevlieg het staan bekend as die Mamotswiri Hill en is 1 838 bokant seespieël. Die vliegtuie het teen die berg vasgevlieg teen 1 570 meter bo seespieël. Die ongeluk word aan gure weersomstandighede toegeskryf. Reddingspanne het van Sondag af onverpoos na die vliegtuie gesoek, die weer wou egter nie saamspeel nie. Die soektog is Maandagmiddag afgelas en Dinsdagoggend om 05:30 voortgesit. Steyn het tydens die konferensie gesê dat hulle baie akkuraat was in hulle analise na waar om vir die vliegtuie te soek. Die weer het die soektog belemmer. Hy het ook benadruk dat dit n baie emosionele reddingspoging was maar dat alle owerhede betrokke deurentyd professioneel opgetree het. Die wrakke is ongeveer 08:15 Dinsdagoggend deur n helikopter opgemerk. Die omgewing is glo baie bergagtig en nie maklik te voet bekombaar nie. Familielede het trauma berading ontvang met ons ter perse gaan. Mopani distrik se uitvoerende burgermeester, Joshua Matlou het persoonlik namens Tzaneen en Limpopo provinsie medelye betoon aan die slagoffers se familie lede. PAGE 2 LETABA HERALD - Friday 19 August 2011 NEWS Well-known Joe Darvas passes on TZANEEN has lost a pioneer in the international avocado industry and an extraordinary man who always followed his dreams despite the odds being against him. Joe Darvas passed away on August 12 at the age of 66. He suffered a heart attack and then a stroke nine years ago that had left him unable to look after himself until his death. Joe and his wife Magdalen s South African tale started 40 years ago when they defected from Hungary in order to escape communistic rule. Through a series of unexpected doors opening for them and terrifying journeys between refugee camps, they found themselves in South Africa seven months later, both plant pathologists who couldn t earn what their titles deserved. Joe and Magdalen found work at the Plant Protection Research Institute in Pretoria. In order to earn a decent salary, the institute wanted Joe to produce a South African degree so he went to study at the University of Pretoria. The couple also took English classes at Pretoria Technicon and later Afrikaans classes in order to make South African life easier. Joe returned to the research institute and worked in forest pathology before returning to university to do his Honours. After his Honours, the institute would still not pay him what his South African counterparts were earning, and he accepted a job with May & Baker, a chemical company, in Port Elizabeth. Although the institute still wanted Joe s services desperately, he refused to take one step back and continued his work with May & Baker, earning his Masters in the process. He toured all over the country, doing chemical trials on various plants including avocados in the Tzaneen area. It was at that stage that the avocado industry was collapsing due to the widespread root rot problem, and it was then that Joe made his mark. Westfalia noticed the remarkable work Joe was doing to prevent root rot and approached him with an offer he could not refuse. He became their plant pathologist with his own research facilities and a house to boot. But first Magdalen had to approve. He brought her here and she thought the area was "so pretty". They moved here and this was where they remained. While at Westfalia, Joe received his Doctorate through the University of Pretoria, researching pre- and post harvest diseases in avocados. He also did major work in the selection of resistant root stock. After ending his world renowned work at Westfalia, Joe moved on to Letaba Estate where he also had a hand in solving the root rot problem in citrus plants. He worked at Letaba Estate for a few years and then decided to go at it alone. He focussed mostly on sub-tropical plants and published numerous articles that boosted his international status as a world class pathologist. He is recognised all over the world as a pioneer in the avocado industry and won, amongst others, a special award from the Second World Avocado Congress in recognition of his work, as well as a Golden Avocado Award from South Africa. He is described as a man who absolutely loved his work, and wouldn t have wanted to do anything else had be been given a second chance. His only regret in life was that he never published his work on root rot. Joe and Magdalen were on holiday in Australia nine years ago when he suffered a heart attack. After complications in the Brisbane hospital where he was recovering, he suffered a stroke and never recovered from it. Magdalen took over the business and says she wouldn t have coped these last few years had it not been for the community, ZZ2 and Tommy van Zyl, SAAGA, Dick and Judy Graham, Aldo Rech as well as Sue Lancefield, to name a few. She would like to give them a special thanks for their support during all these years. Joe leaves behind his wife, many good friends as well as their daughter, Dominique - South Africa s first In Vitro baby, who moved to France two years before matriculating and consequently studied medicine and became a d o c t o r. Joe was a modest and humble person, good natured and kind. Dick Graham, a good friend of Joe s, says that he will always remember Joe as an easy going person who was loads of fun and was always happy and smiling. Magdalen saw her husband as a highly intelligent person who never fought or argued with anyone. He was an active member of the Tzaneen Rotary Club and loved the camaraderie the club offered. Although he will be sorely missed, he leaves behind a legacy that will not be forgotten. Municipalities not paying for water AN AMOUNT of R195,6 million in outstanding debt is owed to Lepelle Northern Water (LNW) by the Mopani District Municipality. The Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality owes LNW R24,2 million, Greater Letaba - R418 358 and Greater Tzaneen Municipality - R37 816. According to the Minister of Water Affairs, Edna Molewa, the department is mediating disputes which arose from non payment by the four municipalities. She said an amount of R4,8 million was recently received from Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality and arrangements have been made with Mopani District Municipality, Greater Letaba and Greater Tzaneen Municipalities to pay their outstanding debts to L N W. The bodies still have to be identified, but the thirteen people that were supposed to be flying in the aircraft were: Brian Gruar - owner and pilot of one of the aircraft, Marianne Anderson, as well as Madison and Alexandra Doak - two sisters who attended the air show with Marianne Anderson, their aunt. Tess Spence, whose husband, Dennis, took part in the air show as aerobatic pilot. Louise Warden, whose husband, Glen, also took part as an aerobatic pilot. Kevin Woolocott. The families have been notified and are receiving counselling. This according to a municipal source who stated that after being found guilty of fraud, two municipal officials are back at work, suffering no repercussions for their actions. After extensive investigations by a Special investigation Unit and an official from the National Department of Transport since 2009, two officials had to undergo disciplinary hearings in July following allegations of accepting bribes from learners and drivers licence hopefuls. Rangers of the park were combing the bush, investigating shots they had heard the night before, when they firstly discovered two dead adult rhino, and then the live one just south of the Olifants River. Rangers had to put the animal down and investigations continue. The public is asked to supply any information that might lead to the arrest of the culprits. SABI President Jaco Burger said that the great success of the congress, the quality of presentations, and the debate and networking that were features of the congress emphasised once again the important role irrigation plays not only in farming but in society in general. Notably, South African irrigation expertise is highly rated, and increasingly South African irrigation professionals are playing a role on the continent of Africa too, where the tandem urgent needs are for agricultural productivity and sustainable practices. Our aim for the congress was to provide information that helps to ensure sustainable irrigation now and in the future, for the benefit of the planet and all its people, said Burger. During the course of the three days of compelling presentations from a variety of experts in irrigation, a great number of themes were covered, which all looks to address sustainability in irrigation. These included presentations on: Water Resources Now and in the Future (these included a detailed look at the efforts of the Inkomati Catchment Management Strategy); The Planning of Sustainable Solutions (for instance, a look at revitalisation of irrigation schemes); Designing for Prosperity (a look at energy efficiency and new solutions such as hydro power inventions and SABI s involvement in a new electricity-saving drive on-farm); Irrigation Scheduling Research and Practice (ranging from remote monitoring tools via satellite to other high-tech tools and instruments); Management Tools for Irrigation (including SAPWAT3 test user results and SusFarMS examining sustainable sugarcane farming). About SABI: SABI actively promotes and shares knowledge, aiming to ensure the optimal and efficient use of irrigation water in South Africa, for the ongoing growth of present and future generations. SABI has more than 450 members nationwide, with members drawn from across the irrigation, water and agricultural spectrum of the academic, private and governmental sectors. SABI networks locally and internationally with related organisations and is an honorary member of SANCID (South African National Committee on Irrigation and Drainage). General knowledge quiz successful HAENERTSBURG Rotary Club held a very successful "Bright Sparks" general knowledge quiz on July 29. Sixteen teams consisting of six players each took part. The evening got off to a spirited start with Gluehwein (famous Promnitz recipe made by President Maurice Stander) and hot chocolate with Stroh rum. Robin Gardner was an excellent quizmaster and Michael Holford a great MC. The competition was keen, but once again the team known as the Eggheads was the deserving winner. Interact is Rotary International's service club for young people ages 12 to 18. Interact clubs are sponsored by individual Rotary clubs, which provide support and guidance, but they are self-governing and selfsupporting. Club membership varies greatly. Clubs can be single gender or mixed, large or small. They can draw from the student body of a single school or from two or more schools in the same community. Each year, Interact clubs complete at least two community service projects, one of which furthers international understanding and goodwill. Die spelers en almal betrokke wil die hoofborg nl Thys Diedericks van Mahindra bedank, sonder wie die toernooi nie moontlik sou gewees het nie. Daar is n lemiet van 14 spanne per liga dus skryf so spoedig moontlik in om teleurstelling te voorkom. Daar is n kontant kroeg en braai pakkies beskikbaar en kinders is meer as welkom.

Another win for MDJ Motorsport THE Tzaneen-based MDJ Motorsport team claimed a hard fought first in class during the fifth round of the Northern Regions Rally Championships, The Auto Doctor HMC Witbank Rally, over the past weekend. Erik de Jager and Pieter Gouws started off well by winning the short and rocky first stage and opening an early 3 second lead over fellow Tzaneeners, Eddie Simpson and Marco Lottering. Unfortunately, about 2km into stage 2, everything turned pear-shaped for the MDJ Motorsport team when their VW Citi Golf was brought to a standstill by a faulty map sensor. The team lost over a minute replacing the sensor, leaving them stone last in class S1 and promoting the Simpson Motors team to first. Die eerstespan het in 'n spannende wedstryd teen Hoërskool Standerton te staan gekom waar enigeen van die twee spanne as oorwinnaars van die veld kon stap. Die warm Tzaneen-son was egter 'n groot bondgenoot vir die tuisspan. Ben Vorster was vroeg op die telbord toe hul Cravenweekflank, Madala Ndinisa oor die lyn is vir die eerste drie. Marcel Scholtz het vervyf en die Vossies loop 7-0 voor. Die res van die eerste helfte het aan Standerton behoort en hulle antwoord terug met 'n strafskop en 'n vervyfde drie. Kort voor halftyd flous die Vossies se blitsige skrumskakel, Kefentse Mahlo, die verdediging van Standerton en gaan druk onder die pale. Marcel Scholtz vervyf weer eens en die halftyd telling is 14-10 in Ben Vorster se guns. Vir die eerste 15 minute in die tweede helfte beproef albei spanne mekaar se verdediging, maar deurkomkans is min. Na sowat 20 minute duik die Vossies se linkervleuel, Tovhi Nefale, in die hoekie oor die lyn na 'n vinnige strafskop. Marcel Scholtz vervyf en dit wil voorkom of Ben Vorster die wedstryd in die sakkie het. Standerton laat egter nie op hulle wag nie en antwoord omtrent dadelik terug met 'n drie 72216 SABS 32,5 van hul eie, 21-15 in Ben Vorster se guns. Van hier af bly Standerton op die aanval en val keer op keer die doellyn van Ben Vorster aan. Deurkom kans is daar egter nie. In die laaste 3 minute kry Ben Vorster egter die uitklophou toe hul sterk vleuel onder die pale gaan kuier vir 'n vervyfde drie, die eindtelling dan 28-15 in Ben Vorster se guns. Die 0/15's van Ben Vorster was net te sterk vir hulle teenstanders en hulle wen op 'n drafstap teen Standerton met 59-0. Die 0/14's het te staan gekom teen Hoërskool Secunda en wen ook hulle wedstryd met 19-14. Die komende naweek is al die spanne op die pad vir die semi-finale. Die 0/14's kom te staan teen Potchefstroom Gimnasium op Potchefstroom, die 0/15's meet kragte teen die Hoërskool Tuine in Pretoria, die 0/ 16's vat ook die pad Pretoria toe, waar hulle te staan gaan kom teen Overkruin en laastens gaan die eerste span probeer om Lichtenburg op hulle tuisveld te troef.
