REGENERATION Berlin House Office investigates the graduation between private, public and the movement of people inside space. The apartment is located in the west of Berlin in a historical building, where after being bombed during the Second World War, the façade was rebuilt, leaving intact the original structure of the building: large rooms with period ceilings and wooden floors throughout. A radical transformation of the existing plan was needed to create a multiplicity of uses and environments with different proportions in order to revitalize the space. DEMOLITION With the exception of the two supporting walls, all other walls are demolished in order to obtain a unique space separated by a linear system of full-height sliding doors. COLOUR Color is a key element in the characterization of the house, providing texture and luminosity. The plan was the only method of representation to generate the space and its proportions. SENSORY EXPERIENCE The apartment can be traversed in multiple ways, each room having two entrances, a creating at first glance a sense of a labyrinth. Main entrances are wider, visually linking the secondary and more intimate spaces, with direct access to every room. PLAN THE PROPORTIONS OF THE ROOMS ARE not based on ANY STANDARD, WITH only THE logical MEASUREMENTS OF HUMAN inhabitants used as a guide. Together with LIN residential projects POM (Paris) and OKH (Oldenburg) this house investigates a new typology. Large open common spaces and many small individual cells, organized with two base levels, separated by a difference of 40 cm, in order to conceal utility pipes and technical equipment. CULLINARY SPACE The kitchen lies in the middle of the plan, having connections from three other spaces. It is laid-out in Frankfort kitchen proportions and is equipped with industrial restaurant-grade kitchen appliances. MULTIFUNCTIONAL SPACE The main room is a large void of 60 m² used in many ways (sports, workshops, dance, installations, music). OLD SYSTEMS Realized during the architect s working on the SCD (La cite du design) project, the apartment serves as a laboratory for experimentation and prototyping of health and heating systems for industrial use.
RECREATION The sauna is used during the cold winter months. DETAILS The decision to leave details unfinished and plaster exposed articulates the will to find a common language between the public and private/domestic realms while exploring their limits. LIGHT QUALITY Zones are defined by color, and a linear system of doors/filters reinforces a path through different sensorial experiences. COLOUR FILTERS It becomes a key element in the characterization of the house giving texture and shine.
