He received a doctorate in architecture and a master s in city planning from the University of California, Berkeley, and a bachelor of arts from Yale. His first book, Insuring the City: The Prudential Center and the Postwar Urban Landscape (Yale Univ. Press, 2012) was awarded the Kenneth T. Jackson Prize from the Urban History Association and the Lewis Mumford Award from the Society of American City & Regional Planning History. Mr. Rubin s work focuses on the making and meaning of the built environment; architectural preservation and the politics of heritage planning. An enthusiastic lecturer, Elihu has also made documentary videos relating to urban history, the politics of public spaces, urban redevelopment, architectural modernism, and street life.

Visit Storm King Art Center for a guided tour of its outdoor sculptures and site-specific commissions by dozens of artists including Alexander Calder, Mark di Suvero, and Richard Serra. After a picnic lunch, continue to Putnam County and Boscobel, States Dyckman s elegant 1808 Federal mansion, for a tour of the important collection of Federal period furniture and decorative arts. Transfer to Rhinebeck and check in at the Beekman Arms Delamater Inn for a five-night stay. Enjoy a welcome reception this evening. There will be free time in downtown Hudson, the country s first chartered city, for first-tier antique shopping and lunch at leisure. In the afternoon, visit Olana, former home of Hudson River School artist Frederic Edwin Church, who selected Calvert Vaux to design this distinctive home s mix of Victorian architectural elements and Middle-Eastern decorative motifs. Return to the hotel in Rhinebeck for dinner nearby. B, D WEDNESDAY, MAY 16: HUDSON VALLEY Attend a morning lecture before driving east of Springwood to Val-Kill, Eleanor Roosevelt s residence and the place most associated with her. After lunch, stroll amidst the splendor of the Gilded Age at the Vanderbilt Mansion at Hyde Park, one of the valley s oldest estates. Continue to Union Church adorned with windows designed by Matisse and Chagall. After lunch at Philipsburg Manor, explore Kykuit, home to four generations of Rockefellers. The mansion and surrounding grounds are a National Trust Historic Site. Attend a farewell dinner at the hotel this evening. B, D FRIDAY, MAY 18: HUDSON VALLEY / NEW YORK CITY Following breakfast and morning check out, visit Locust Grove, an 1851 Italianate villa designed for artist and telegraph inventor Samuel F. B. Morse.
