A Place to Call Home This theme reflects the opportunities and activities that await you as a new, transfer, or returning student in the residence halls. Whether you currently know very few other students or you have been here for a year or more, you will find people with whom you ll enjoy spending time and sharing experiences. Your home away from home will provide facilities, staff, other students and experiences that will form the foundation for this academic year at UW-Platteville. It s up to you to open the doors and take advantage of the many opportunities for learning and having fun! We encourage you to contact your roommate prior to arriving on campus. You can talk about things that each of you will bring and coordinate what you need (and what will fit!) in your room. Rooms in Rountree Commons come with a full refrigerator and microwave, so you won t need to bring these. If you do not receive the name, address and phone number for your assigned roommate with this mailing, you may request that information from this office. Please review the information contained in this room assignment packet. Although not required, it s helpful to bring the assignment notification sheet when you check into your room. The Resident Assistant staff will be available to answer questions and assist you with check-in details. A brochure is distributed to new students during summer registration that describes things that you ll want to know as you prepare to move in. It is entitled Guide to Living on Campus. Get one! The check-in schedule is adapted to fit Welcome Weekend activities and the start of classes on Tuesday, September 4th. Please note the specific check-in times and staff / services available if you are a continuing student. Watch for our Opening Newsletters around August 15th on the website! 4

ROUNTREE COMMONS OPENING DATES AND TIMES New Students Friday, August 31 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Welcome Weekend activities begin at 3p.m. with a special convocation for students and parents. Plan time to move in, attend the convocation and say goodbye to family and friends. Saturday, September 1st 9-11 a.m. Those unable to arrive on Friday may move in. Instructions regarding move in procedures (where to park, who can use the elevators, charges for damages to walls, flooring, etc) will be provided in an August newsletter. Continuing Students To ease congestion, students are scheduled below by designated floors. Friday, August 31: 9-11 a.m. Transfer students moving into Rountree Commons are eligible to arrive to participate in the Welcome Weekend activities Saturday, September 1: 8-2 p.m. Floors 2, 5 and 6 Sunday, September 2: 8-2 p.m. Floors 3 and 4 Monday, September 3: 10-2 p.m. Anyone If you are unable to adhere to this schedule, you may arrive at the next scheduled time, but not earlier than your scheduled time. We understand that people may have other plans for the weekend, but we are not able to accommodate preferred times based on your specific needs. We appreciate and expect your cooperation. Staff have other responsibilities and are attending or facilitating Welcome Weekend activities. They may not be available nor able to handle the various check-in stations at other times. If you do not arrive within the scheduled times, you will need to seek a hotel and wait until the next scheduled check-in. Make appropriate arrangements to arrive within the designated times. Contact the Office of Residence Life if you are unable to check-in by Tuesday, September 4. 5

BIKE INFORMATION Order on the Office of Residence Life Website! Bicycles cannot be stored in your room. Rountree Commons provides two options for students and their bicycle storage and safety needs. You may use free bike racks outside the hall or rent a bike storage space in the basement of Rountree. These spaces are available on a first come, first served basis. More information on reserving a bike space will be sent to you this summer. How do I register my bike? Submit the form at http:// www.uwplatt.edu/police/bikeform.html to the University Police Department. You need your residence hall room assignment to register your bike. Please call University Police at 608.342.1584 with questions. RENTAL LOFTS Order on the Office of Residence Life website! Order on the Office of Residence Life website at http://reslife.saf.uwplatt.edu/housing/ Resident receives a confirmation e-mail that the order was received. Residents are NOT allowed to build / bring their own lofts. Residents may NOT rent from www.bedloft.com WOOD frame futons do NOT fit under the high lofts in these halls. Rental price of $115 will be due at the time of loft pickup. Checks made out to Real Estate Foundation. Lofts utilize the bed frame, bed ends and mattress provided in the room. Information on loft distribution will be included in your August newsletter 6

NOTIFICATION TO CANCEL A RENTAL AGREEMENT You may not cancel your Rountree Commons reservation unless you withdraw from the university or are granted permission from the Director of Residence Life. You have entered into an academic year contract and are financially obligated for room rental in Rountree Commons for the 2012 13 academic year. Exceptions to the above will be available to students who participate in a recognized university program that requires the student to live away from this area in programs such as student teaching, internship, co-op and study abroad. Students who graduate in December will also be released at the end of the Fall semester from the remainder of the rental agreement terms. IMPORTANT NOTICE TO STUDENTS WITHIN COMMUTING DISTANCE Freshmen and sophomore students are required to live in the residence halls unless a written release has been authorized by the Office of Residence Life at UW-Platteville. Students may commute from the home of their parent / legal guardian by providing the necessary documentation and receiving the written release from this department. However, if a freshman or sophomore student decides not to commute and submits a residence hall rental agreement, that student is obligated to live in the residence halls for the entire year. They are not eligible to be released from the contractual agreement at midyear or any time during the year. CAN I CHANGE MY ROOM ASSIGNMENT? Assignments are not changed during the summer. We have procedures that enable us to manage those spaces and that were described in our reservation processes. Someone s change of plans or preference for someone else cannot be accommodated. We appreciate your understanding. Residence hall staff will explain room change procedures and timeframes if you remain interested after you arrive and can assist with roommate issues. 7

EARLY ARRIVAL FOR SCHEDULED PRACTICES FOR SPORTS TEAMS OR BAND MEMBERS You will receive specific instructions from your coach / instructor regarding your move into the residence halls. You move directly into your regular Fall assignment. Early loft pick up information will be available at your check-in. Student athletes may contact their specific coach or call Athletics at 608.342.1567 with questions. Marching Pioneers may contact Matthew Gregg at 608.342.1019, e-mail greggm@uwplatt.edu or find information on their website at http://www.uwplatt.edu/org/marchingpioneers/bandcamp.html WHAT IS MY MAILING ADDRESS? You will receive this combination during the check in process. USPS mail, along with campus mail, is sent to this mailbox and must be checked daily.
