Cornerstone C a r m e l M i s s ion Fou n dat ion SPRING 2011 BOARD MEMBERS Samuel L. Wright, Jr., President Victor Grabrian, Vice President Doug Hayashi, Treasurer Brian D. Call Dolores P. Hagey Lane Loyko Valera W. Lyles Mary Kay Teresa Charles Wilmot STAFF Timothy Roehl General Manager PO Box 221351 Carmel, California 93922 (831) 624-3261 WEBSITE: www.carmelmissionfoundation.org EMAIL: info@carmelmissionfoundation.org The Carmel Mission Foundation was formed to fund the conservation and preservation of the historical properties and artifacts of the Carmel Mission. The Foundation is a 501 c 3 non-profit corporation independent from any religious organization. Its tax ID number is 26-2981780. All contributions are tax deductible to the fullest extent allowed by law. Thanks to you! This edition of the Cornerstone is dedicated in large part to recognition of the more than 400 individuals, families, organizations and foundations that have contributed thus far to the Foundation s project for the restoration of the Carmel Mission. These contributions to date have allowed the Foundation to fund over half a million dollars in expenditures for professional fees in conjunction with the investigative, discovery and design phases of the project. Commencement of actual construction on the Basilica is scheduled for May, but some preliminary pieces of the project have been evidenced, for instance, by the removal of the entry arch in December. This was prompted by concerns about the structural stability of the arch but also, coincidentally, it was a necessary condition prerequisite to commencement of work on the Basilica roof, since the entryway will be utilized as the access point for some of the construction equipment. Additionally, the completion and approval by the City of Carmel of a survey of the trees on the Mission grounds has allowed the removal of several large yew trees that were both invasive structurally and obscuring the view of the Mission. The past year has been extremely gratifying for the Foundation. The success of the Tricentennial Capital Campaign reflects a growing awareness of the critical nature of the Mission s structural condition. This is coupled with our IN THE NEWS donors appreciation for the Mission as The Foundation was recognized by both a unique repository of history, art the AT&T Tournament s Birdies for and architecture, as well as a venue that Charity Program as one of the Program s top charitable is fundamental to the community s organizations, out of a group of cultural, economic, religious and social almost 100 from the Central Coast fabric. One of our contributors said it and beyond, with an award of a so well when he remarked that his booth located at the Tournament s donation was prompted by the Grand Entrance. During our day at reflection that: You are restoring The Pro-Am California s pyramids. We are we provided indebted to him for this observation fans from and for the donation that he and his around the wife made along with the donations of country with our other 400 plus donors. The names for the first two plaques have been sent for casting to the Bronze Division of the Matthews Corporation in Pittsburgh, PA. Founded in 1850, the Matthews Corporation is recognized as the United States leading manufacturer of cast bronze memorial products. The Wall has been designed by the architectural firm of Franks Brenkwitz & Associates of Santa Cruz County, architects for the Restoration Project. Carmel Mission Foundation s 2011 Community Lecture Series Preserving the Past for Future Generations Author and historian Neal Hotelling of the Pebble Beach Company will launch the first in our series of lectures on Sunday, March 6th. Neal will trace the late 19th-century transformation of this region into a tourist mecca, with particular focus on connections between the Old Hotel Del Monte America s first all-season resort hotel and the Carmel Mission s restoration of the 1880 s. As conservator of the Pebble Beach Company archives, Neal s wealth of knowledge along with access to early documents and photography, will delight fans of early Peninsula history. After his lecture Neil will be signing copies of his latest book as we enjoy a light refreshment! Sponsored by the Carmel Mission Foundation as part of its commitment to support historical and artistic exhibits connected to the understanding of the historical importance of early California and the California Mission System. Sunday, March 6 at 3:00 p.m. Studio 105, main entrance Sunset Center, Carmel, CA ADMISSION: Free!
