Lighting Master Classes 2013

The Brandi Institute for Light and Design offers the About us first international training programme for lighting design of its kind and combines theoretical principles and practical relevance. We are independent and not tied to manufacturers. The Institute is solely committed to good lighting and follows a human-centered design approach which is expressed in a practice-oriented curriculum. Part-time courses aimed at working practitioners and new university graduates. The programme covers a broad spectrum, ranging from artificial lighting, daylight design, masterplan design and electrical engineering to basic project management units. The training at the Brandi Institute for Light and Design combines the teaching of technical principles with design ambition and project management units. After successful participation students obtain a certificate by the institute. Courses are taught in English. Page 3

Teaching method The training at the Brandi Institute for Light and Design combines the teaching of technical principles with design ambition and project management units. After successful participation students obtain a certificate by the institute. Courses are taught in English. In 2013 our programme will start with four Master Classes which will be held in Hamburg. Each Master Class comprises lectures, workshops and mock-ups over a period of five days. Students will sign a model lighting design contract which will take them through all project stages and define their scope of work. Renowned experts provide detailed knowledge and background information on technical and legal matters. The courses are designed around two Master Teachers taking the students through the conceptual and execution stages of a project. As in real-life situations the Master Teachers will enrich the class with their respective experience and visions. We link theory and practice which entails that we do not have a fixed lecture theatre. The places where the courses are held always depend on the topic of each study unit; be it a floating homes on the river, an office floor in the city, the hull of a ship or an old warehouse in the port. Page 4

In each Master Class, students will acquire all the skills needed for the entire process of lighting design, becoming familiar with essential stages such as: - Concepts and design development - Presentations for clients - Budgeting - Selection of lighting fixtures - Production of lighting layouts and specifications - Coordination with architects - Tendering procedure - Site supervision Benefit The Brandi Institute for Light and Design will kick off with four Master Classes in 2013: Master Classes - Essentials of Light // 06-10 May 2013 - High-performance energy buildings // 26-30 August 2013 - Workplace design // 02-06 Septmeber 2013 - Health Wellness Light // 04-08 November 2013 May August September November essentials of light 06-10 workplace design 02-06 health - wellness -light 04-08 high-performance energy buildings 26-30 Page 5

Essentials of Light A good lighting designer is both artist and technician. Sensitivity is required for the perception and description of light whilst resolve is required for the planning process. This workshop is an introduction to the human factors in light, its perception and the development of a lighting vocabulary. Essentials of light is a Master Class conducted by a lighting designer and an architect. It starts with a single ray of light in the hull of a freight ship and progresses to bright daylight environments. This workshop enables you to analyse and describe lighting situations both aesthetically and technically. You will not only learn about the theoretical background, but also experiment with and test your design ideas in mock-ups. When 06-10 May 2013 Deadline for application: 07 April 2013 Master Teachers Ulrike Brandi / Ulrike Brandi Licht Jenny Osuldsen / Snøhetta Design Venues on Cap San Diego an old cargo ship now used as a museum ship in the port of Hamburg... 2010 Klaus-Peter Bock and in the auditorium of Deichtorhallen, one of Europe s largest art centers for contemporary art and photography. High-performance energy buildings Sustainable lighting design places human needs at its centre and daylight design is a first step. Not governed by modern sustainability standards highly sophisticated facades designs complement regional buildings traditions. A master of sustainable architecture will take you through the stages of integrative design, placing emphasis on technical and esthetical aspects. The focus is on how local climate conditions influence the shape and design of buildings. Together with a master lighting designer you will develop a scheme for the interplay of daylight and artificial light. Renowned experts will teach you the technical criteria you will need to judge and benchmark your own designs. At the end of the workshop the focus will shift to modern media facades combining LED technology and controls. When 26-30 August 2013 Deadline for application: 12. August 2013 Master Teachers Ulrike Brandi / Ulrike Brandi Licht Thomas Auer / Transsolar Venues in the Chinese Tea House Yu-Garden, a cultural centre close to lake Alster and... on top of Hamburg with a splended view. Page 7

Workplace design Google and co have changed the way we think about our workplaces. Today s offices are no longer cube farms but consist of individual spaces that have both technical and atmospheric lighting. This workshop combines theory and practice. You will design the lighting for a workplace project starting with signing a contract. A master interior architecture will guide you through the conceptual stages of workplace design. It entails the functions of space, the influence of daylight, materials and colours. A master lighting designer joins the team to translate the design ideas into light and in doing so addresses the project structure, budgeting and human factors in light. In this workshop you will design a project from scratch to completion, define a budget, solve technical problems and test your proposal in a mock-up. When 02 06 September 2013 Deadline for application: 19. August 2013 Master Teachers Sevil Peach / SevilPeach Architecture+Design Charles Stone / Fisher Marantz Stone Venues...to be announced (in Hamburg/ Germany) Page 8

Health Wellness Light Hospitality, residential and recreation projects call for specific solutions that create a unique atmosphere and ensure a balanced interplay of light and material. They require designers not only to deviate from standard solutions but also to resolve technical challenges, for example found in damp environments. What makes you feel at home? Starting with this question, a master architect will help you to develop moods that relate to different functions in spa areas. Together with a master lighting designer your ideas will be developed into a lighting layout. This Master Class goes through all the stages of a project and reaches beyond creating atmospheric designs to embracing topics like budget constraints, the process of design and technical problems. You will design a project from the beginning to completion with the input from experts and the constant feedback from master teachers. When 04 08 November 2013 Deadline for application: 14. October 2013 Master Teachers Venues Nathalie de Vries / MVRDV Jeff Miller / Horton Lees Brogden Lighting Design...to be announced (in Hamburg/ Germany) Page 9
