HER-H497/597: Explring Art in Central Eurpe Tentative Syllabus fr Summer 2014 Curse Descriptin This study abrad curse will prvide students with the pprtunity t explre art and culture in Central Eurpe. After preliminary instructinal meetings in Indianaplis, students and faculty will travel as a grup t Berlin, Prague, and Vienna, where we will study significant bjects and sites in persn. The curriculum fr this curse is fairly flexible. Theretical appraches t the study f memry will prvide the fundatin fr the independent research prjects that students undertake prir t departure and while we are abrad. Thrugh frmal presentatins, class discussin, and reflective writing, students will synthesize the material and methds they learn frm assigned readings and their wn analysis f primary surces. Curse Requirements Readings: Much f what yu read fr this curse will be determined by yur independent research prject. Each bject/site listing will include at least ne research surce t get yu started, but it will be up t yu t d the bulk f the research in rder t prepare fr yur presentatin. Entries may evaluate display, bjects, and interpretatin at the sites we visit, r cnsider the ways in which the sites we visit and the bjects we view engage the different mdels fr understanding memry that we encunter in assigned readings. Final essay abut a wrk first encuntered abrad: In this essay, yu will cnsider three main questins: What is yur preliminary analysis f the bject r site? What else d yu want t knw abut it? Where wuld yu g t seek ut that infrmatin? This assignment is due within 3 weeks f the end f the travel prtin f the trip. Graduate students will cnsult with supervising faculty t develp a persnalized research/assignment plan based n student interests.
