THE BRIDGEPORT NEWS WILL BE CLOSED ON MONDAY, DECEMBER 25TH, 2017 FOR THE CHRISTMAS HOLIDAY WE WILL RE-OPEN ON TUESDAY, DEC. 26TH AT 9:00 AM VOLUME 78 NO. 24 Free Home Delivery 773 927 0025 J. Racinowski, Editor/Manager New Tutors Trained at Aquinas Literacy Center Aquinas Literacy Center, a nonprofit literacy organization in McKinley Park, knows the value that volunteer tutors bring to our organization. Without the support of many volunteers, Aquinas would not be able to carry out its mission of empowering adults to learn English and become more engaged in their community. Recently, Aquinas trained 18 new volunteer English Literacy tutors to help address the critical societal need of adult education in English as a Second Language. More volunteer tutors are needed though, because there are over 30 new learners waiting to be placed with a tutor. Aquinas Literacy Center continues to grow as more students register and participate in supplemental learning. Volunteer tutors are needed to instruct limited English proficient adults learners for 90 minutes per week at our center, 1751 West 35th Street. All instruction is one on one and training is provided. Knowledge of a second language is not required; all instruction is in English. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer English Literacy tutor, the next Tutor Training Workshop is: Friday, January 26 (6pm 9pm) and Saturday, January 27 (9am 4pm). Tutors must attend both days for certification. For more information, please contact Sabrina Poulin, Volunteer Coordinator, at 773 927 0512 or email her at Sabrina@aquinasliteracycenter.org. Santa Lucia School Honors Its Patron Saint The feast of St. Lucy was Dec.13th. St. Lucy was born in Italy and is the patron saint of the blind and people who suffer from eye diseases or illness. Lucy s mother wanted to marry her young daughter off to a wealthy man who was a pagan. But Lucy had promised to only love and serve the Lord. In anger, the man tried to harm her vision. But by the grace of God, her sight was restored. They tried to burn her, but all attempts were unsuccessful. She finally died by the sword. The patron saint of Santa Lucia School and Church celebrates her feast day each year with a beautiful mass. This year the children in grade 1 got to plan her mass and lead the mass as lectors, along with their 5th grade buddies. The students were very proud to be able to prepare and teach the congregation about their beloved saint. Rebecca Lopez was dressed as the saint and with the help of her teacher, read a wonderful and informative essay about St. Lucy. We remember and honor St. Lucy for being steadfast in her love and faith in God. BRIDGEPORT NEWS 3506 S. Lipinski Honors 2017 Senior Citizens of the Year Congressman Dan Lipinski (IL 3) announced the winners of the 2017 Senior Citizen of the Year Award during a special program in Hickory Hills. The winners were chosen based on their contributions to their communities in the Third Congressional District. These individuals demonstrate on a daily basis the outstanding spirit and commitment that exists in all of our communities, Rep. Lipinski said. I am honored to recognize these seniors who have selflessly donated their time and energy to causes and pursuits that teach all of us the value of service. The 2017 Senior Citizen of the Year Award winners are: Phyllis Adams, Art Arellano, Adrian Mary Charnick, Dr. Vernon Crawley, John Devona, Raymond Hodson, Jerry Hoenig, Edward McLaughlin, Patricia Pastore, Toni Piccirillo, Grace Pluhar, Russell Pluhar and Cynthia Salvino. To be eligible for this award, a senior must be nominated by the leader of an organization or an official from their community. Only a select few are chosen to receive this honor. Congressman Dan Lipinski (IL 3) is joined by the 2017 Senior Citizens of the Year. Guest Speaker at Saint Jerome On December 8, the sixth grade students of Saint Jerome and their first grade reading buddies had a special visitor. Mr. Joseph Liberti of Cintas Corporation came to school and spoke to the students about power plants. Mr. Liberti showed the students a power point presentation on various types of power plants and the risks involved for workers at the plants. He explained how his company provides protective clothing for those workers. Students enjoyed his speech but especially enjoyed trying on the protective gear! Mount Carmel High School Helps Restock Food Pantry; Donates Over 2,000 Food Items Mount Carmel High School jump started with giving back this holiday season as the school and community brought in over 2,000 cans for donation during the school s annual Advent Action Food Drive. Students delivered the food to the Morgan Park Food Pantry to help restock the pantry inventory following Thanksgiving. Mount Carmel grad, Matt Taylor 57, sat on the board and volunteered at the pantry from 1981 to 2015. It s important to us as a school that we give back to the community, said Mount Carmel Director of Student Engagement Sean Sweany. Our students really care and want to try to make a difference for so many people in the world. Students were encouraged to provide at least two cans of food. However, junior Ameen Morgan exceeded the bare minimum bringing in 70 cans. The selfless act was inspired by the acknowledgment of providing for the community simply because it s the right thing to do. Delivering the cans to the pantry is more than just getting the chance be out of school for a couple of hours. Some people may not have a lot of things in their possession in order to survive so it s moments like this as to why we do what we re doing today, said Morgan when reflecting on what inspired him to go above and beyond. Mount Carmel s annual Advent Action initiative starts with the Thanksgiving food drive and concludes with a toy drive. All toys will be donated to Catholic Charities in an effort to help provide toys for children this holiday season.

The current bill would eliminate the exclusion of qualified tuition reductions from taxable income. The effect would be to tax the value of tuition waivers that graduate students receive in exchange for serving as teaching or research assistants during their course of study. Tuition waivers are money that students never see, and by including it in their taxable income, some could see their tax bills double or worse. The United States is one of the most innovative countries in the world thanks in no small part to our top-notch graduate education system, said Rep. Lipinski in a letter to House and Senate Leaders. American graduate students go on to become top scientists, engineers, researchers, and leaders that generate many of the innovations that drive our economy. The effect of this bill would be to make graduate school unaffordable for thousands of students, lowering the research output of our universities and starving us of our next generation of professors and scientists. The value of a tuition waiver can be significant. For example, graduate school tuition at Duke University is typically over $50,000 per year. Adding this amount to a student s taxable income would have serious tax consequences. With 55% of graduate students nationwide earning an adjusted gross income of $20,000 or less, and 87% earning $50,000 or less, they cannot afford a major increase in their tax burden. Page 8 BRIDGEPORT NEWS GREETING AD DEADLINE IS MONDAY AT 5PM THE MAN WHO ADVERTISES HIS BUSINESS HAS ONE Girls in STEM Winter Break Program Youth Technology Corps at Benton House 8 Days of Technology, Powered by ComEd Benton House has partnered with Youth Technology Corps, Coder Dojo Chi, and ComEd to provide a Winter Break Technology Camp for girls in 6th to 12th Grade this winter. The 8 day program will consist of a refurbishment training boot camp where students will learn how to build their own computer, repair damaged computers, and install operating systems. At the completion of the boot camp, Coder Dojo Chi will be running a two day 8 hour minicamp where students will learn by doing using their knowledge to build their own Choose your own Adventure game on their very own website. During session one students will understand how the language HTML, CSS, and Javascript work together to build the web. Students will develop an understanding how HTML is used to define the structure of web pages. In session two students will focus on design through technology. That day students will learn CSS and how programming in a new language paired with HTML changes how we use the web. Students will develop an understanding of how to control the layout and design of their own custom profile page. Classes will be from 2pm to 4pm for the first 6 days, and 10am to 2pm on January 4th and 5th. There is a very small fee and pricing is a little tricky. The cost for the entire program, all eight days is ONLY $10 and those who take the entire program will be invited to continue as a member of Youth Technology Corps and qualify for free instruction in robotics, programming, and refurbishment. Also included will be field trips, competitions and free summer camp. For girls only interested in the Coder Dojo Chi portion of the program, (website design and game building) the cost is $45. Yes, it is less money to show up all 8 days than just to show up for the last two. Our funder, ComEd, will scholarship students who buy into the entire program. To register, email mark.lennon@ytcorps.org or text 312 927 0368. Benton House is located at 3052 S. Gratten Ave, one block east of Loomis, just north of 31st St. Tree Lighting Events Commissioner John P. Daley, Alderman Patrick D. Thompson, in conjunction with the South Loop Chamber of Commerce, presented two Tree Lighting events on Monday, December 11th. The events were held at Bake for Me located at 4305 South Halsted and at The Richard J. Daley Branch Library at 3400 South Halsted. Both events were filled with entertainment including a special appearance by Santa Claus and his reindeer and a performance by Santa s Elves. We are happy so many neighbors were able to join us to kick off the Holiday season with our annual tree lighting ceremonies, said Commissioner Daley. We are grateful to all of the businesses who made this event possible and would like to wish everyone a Merry, added Alderman Thompson. Pictured with Commissioner Daley and Alderman Thompson are: Jinger O Malley (South Loop Chamber of Commerce, Joe and Donna Kapacinskas (Bake for Me), Santa Claus, Captain Don Jerome (9th District), Katie Thompson, P.O. Jim McAndrew, Commander Randall Darlin (9th District). New Altar Servers at St. Jerome We would like to congratulate Will Babich and Johnny Molloy, 4th grade students at Saint Jerome School. The boys were installed as Altar Servers on Sunday, November 26 at the 9:30 a.m. Mass. Special thanks to Mrs. Eva Mossman who continues to prepare these young people to serve week in and week out! Safe Shopping Guide for Consumers To help ensure that consumers are purchasing the safest toys and products over the holiday season, state Representative, Sonya Harper is highlighting Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan s Safe Shopping Guide to offer consumers up to date information on holiday gifts and items that have been recalled over the past year. People should always have the best information handy when it comes to buying toys, gifts and other items for their loved ones and friends, Harper said. There can be recalls on some items, which people should know a bout before they buy something. This guide highlights potentially dangerous items for consumers. Each year the Illinois Attorney General s Office releases its Safe Shopping Guide to bring the most recent information on products that consumers may intend to purchase over the holiday season. The 2017 report is the tenth annual report submitted from the office. Harper is highlighting the important data on which toys, furniture and household items have a recall history and could harm children and others. I m proud my office has helped busy & overwhelmed parents make sure their homes are free of unsafe toys and products for the past 10 years, Madigan said. I am confident the 2017 Safe Shopping Guide continues that tradition. For more information about recalled products, residents can contact the Recall Hotline at 1 888 414 7678 or sign up to receive recall alerts directly at recalls.gov.
