Region of Waterlo Success Stories Since the start of the Region's Affordable Housing Strategy in 2001, more than 1,500 new units of affordable housing have been created in 32 buildings across Waterloo Region. These buildings provide a mix of both subsidized and non-subsidized market units. By clicking on the names of the buildings listed below, you can learn more about each of the projects supported through the Region's Affordable Housing Strategy. Camelot is nestled in an established neighbourhood and conveniently located in close proximity to grocery stores, pharmacies, medical and dental offices, banks and transit. Cedar View Apartments, 42 units 35 Cedar St. S., Kitchener Developed by Kitchener Housing Inc., this infill development project features 42 one-bedroom units, four of which are wheelchair accessible. Thirty-one tenants

in the building receive a rent-geared-to-income subsidy. Cedar View, which is located near downtown Kitchener close to transit, has a community room for tenants and on-site laundry facilities. Charles Village, 22 units 75 Charles St. E., Kitchener Developed by House of Friendship, this three-storey apartment building close to downtown Kitchener features a total of 22 rent-geared-to-income one-bedroom units, two of which are wheelchair accessible. Charles Village has on-site housing for support staff and amenity space in the building for community events and programs. Shopping and a number of bus routes are available nearby. Heartwood Place, 33 units 19-21 Gaukel St., Kitchener Heartwood Place in downtown Kitchener, developed by a community-based charitable organization, was created through the conversion of a former industrial building once used as a textile retailer. Heartwood Place features 12 bachelor units, 12 one-bedroom units and 9 twobedroom units for a total of 33 units. Twelve tenants receive a rent-geared-toincome subsidy and six units are reserved for clients of Waterloo Region Homes for Mental Health. Keystone Homes, 6 units 31 and 35 Avon Rd., Kitchener Developed by M.D. Kovacevic Inc. and L.M. One unit in each triplex will be occupied by an applicant from the Region's centralized waiting list for community housing who will pay rent at a rate that is set below the Average Market Rent for Waterloo Region. King Street Properties, 4 units 15 Memorial Ave., Elmira Developed by King Street Properties Ltd., this two-storey building in Elmira was created through the conversion of unused commercial space in an existing commercial-residential complex. Four new three-bedroom units were added to the four pre-existing one-bedroom units. Two tenants receive a rent-geared-to-income subsidy. Kirkwood Apartments, 2 units 191 Stanley St., Ayr Developed by the Ayr and District Citizens Association, Kirkwood Apartments created two additional affordable units through the conversion of unused space in an existing seniors' building. Ayr, a community of approximately 3,500 residents, is located in North Dumfries Township, just a short drive from Kitchener and Cambridge. La Capanna Apartments, 42 units 86 Elgin St. S., Cambridge Developed by La Capanna II Homes (Non-Profit) Inc., this four-storey, infill project features 10 one-bedroom, 29 two-bedroom and three three-bedroom units for a total of 42 units. Twenty tenants in the building receive a rent-geared-toincome subsidy. La Capanna Apartments are situated in a mature neighbourhood, on a bus route, and within walking distance of downtown Galt, elementary schools, and shopping. Lena Apartments, 52 units 224-230 Lena Cres., Cambridge Developed by Lena Apartments Inc., this four-storey, infill project situated in a new residential neighbourhood of Cambridge features 32 one-bedroom and 20 two-bedroom units for a total of 52 units. Thirteen of the tenants in the onebedroom units rent at a rate that is set below the Average Market Rent for Waterloo Region. Lena Apartments are located directly behind a shopping centre, close to schools,

Maple Hill Creek Apartments, 70 units 274 Erb St. W., Waterloo Developed by Maple Hill Creek Apartments Inc., this 10-storey infill project was completed in July 2007. Maple Hill Creek Apartments feature 19 one-bedroom and 51 two-bedroom units for a total of 70 units. Eighteen units will be occupied by applicants from the Region's centralized waiting list for community housing who will pay rent at a rate that is set below the Average Market Rent for Waterloo Region. Situated on a wooded lot in the Westmount area of Waterloo, Maple Hill Creek Apartments are within close proximity to Westmount Place shopping mall, the University of Waterloo, Wilfrid Laurier University and transit. W., Kitchener Developed by Old Fire Hall Apartments Ltd., this three-storey complex is situated adjacent to an old fire hall and features 23 one-bedroom units and 23 two-bedroom lofts for a total of 35 units. Each storey has a separate entrance and no common hallways, and one unit serves as a laundry facility. W., Kitchener The lofts, developed by Old Fire Hall Lofts Inc. and created through the conversion of the former fire hall in the Victoria Park area of Kitchener, feature seven bachelor units, eight one-bedroom and four three-bedroom affordable units geared to families and single persons. Regency Apartments, 7 units 1215 Queens Bush Rd., Wellesley Developed by Hunke Homes Ltd., the Regency Apartments were created

through the conversion of a former derelict commercial building that once served as a hotel. The building features three one-bedroom, three twobedroom and one three-bedroom unit for a total of seven units. The rent for all seven units is set below the Average Market Rent for Waterloo Region, and two units are occupied by applicants from the Region's centralized waiting list for Community Housing. The Regency Apartments offer small-town living in a picturesque setting in Wellesley Township and the convenience of being within walking distance of various amenities. E., Kitchener Developed by Christopher Lee Holdings Inc., this three-storey apartment building, created through the expansion of an existing 40-unit rental complex, features 27 one-bedroom units with barrier-free access on the main floor to individuals with disabilities. Fourteen tenants in the building receive a rentgeared-to-income subsidy. Spadina Apartments was the first public-private partnership in Ontario to create affordable housing as a municipal capital facility under the Municipal Act. E., Kitchener Developed by Cook Homes Ltd., this infill townhouse development features 26 one-bedroom and 26 three-bedroom units for a total of 52 units. Eighteen tenants in the building receive a rent-geared-to-income subsidy. Spadina Woods is a low-rise, wood-frame structure designed specifically to fit seamlessly within the existing neighbourhood of this established community. Sunnyside Seniors Apartments, 32 units 239 Franklin St. N., Kitchener Sunnyside Seniors Apartments, the first new affordable housing project to be built, owned and operated by the Region of Waterloo, is situated on the "Sunnyside Campus", adjacent to the Sunnyside long-term care facility in Kitchener. This three-storey building features 28 one-bedroom and four twobedroom units, four of which are wheelchair accessible, for a total of 32 units. Twelve tenants receive a rent-geared-to-income subsidy. In addition, fifteen units are reserved for individuals who have a family member residing in the

long-term care facility. Meal plans from the long-term care facility are available to tenants, there are on-site laundry facilities and various amenities, such as transit, can be found nearby. Sunnyside Supportive Housing, 30 units 245 Franklin St. N., Kitchener Currently under construction, Sunnyside Supportive Housing is being developed by the Region of Waterloo and is expected to be ready for occupancy in the spring of 2010. Once completed, Sunnyside Supportive Housing will feature 27 one-bedroom and three twobedroom units, and offer funded care and support services that are coordinated by an on-site case manager. Sunnyside Supportive Housing is situated on the "Sunnyside Campus" in the Stanley Park area of Kitchener and is physically linked to Sunnyside Home and the Seniors Wellness Centre, which is also currently under construction. The Bridges, 20 units 26 Simcoe St., Cambridge Developed by Making Room Community Support for the Homeless Inc., a partnership between Cambridge Kiwanis Village Non-Profit Housing Corporation and Cambridge Shelter Corporation, this three-storey, 20,000 sq. ft. facility features a 40-bed shelter, three family shelter units, 20 rent-geared-to-income bachelor units, a drop-in centre, medical offices, and a kitchen. The Bridges, which has 24-hour on-site staffing, seven days a week, is located in close proximity to downtown Galt, shopping and transit. Developed by Cypriot Homes Association, this eight-storey building features 20 one-bedroom, 59 two-bedroom and eight three-bedroom units, on-site laundry facilities and space allocated for possible future use as a common recreation area. Thirteen barrier-free one-bedroom units are reserved for clients from Participation House, and 45 tenants receive a rent-geared-toincome subsidy. The Next Door, 6 units 84 Frederick St., Kitchener The Next Door, developed by YWCA K-W, was created in the Mary's Place building, a 60-bed emergency shelter for homeless women and families in the heart of downtown Kitchener. The addition of six new supportive one-bedroom apartment units will provide second-stage housing for women fleeing abuse and help families attain stability before they move back into the community. The Queen's Apartments, 8 units 99 Stanley St., Ayr Developed by Lena Melnychuk and family, The Queen's Apartments were created through the conversion of under-utilized space in a commercial building. The building features three bachelor and five onebedroom units for a total of eight units located on the second and third floors of the building. The rent for all eight units is set below the Average Market Rent for Waterloo Region, and two units are occupied by applicants from the Region's centralized waiting list for Community Housing. The Queen's Apartments offer small-town living in a picturesque setting in North Dumfries Township and the convenience of being within walking distance of various amenities. by applicants from the Region's centralized waiting list for community housing who will pay rent at a rate that is set below the Average Market Rent for Waterloo Region. The Rockway Gardens Village is situated across from the beautiful Rockway Gardens and its Senior Citizens Centre, and is on a main bus route that runs the length of Kitchener-Waterloo via King Street and allows for easy access to shopping and other amenities. Fourteen units are occupied by applicants from the Region's centralized waiting list for community housing who pay rent at a rate that is set below the Average Market Rent for Waterloo Region.
