Helsinki, 15 May 2011 DEAR PARTICIPANT OF MARC 2011 COURSE On behalf of the course organizers it is now my turn to wish you all a warm welcome to the MARC 2011 course in Finland. My name is Mona Schalin and my task is to coordinate and facilitate the course activities in cooperation with the course team, teachers and resource persons. In March you received the first and second information letters with some essential information about the course schedule, accommodation, living costs etc. Here you will find the schedule draft and some important maps - where to find the course etc. For any further practical questions, please contact our course secretary Merja Vainio, who is your contact person. THE COURSE START DATE, LOCATION AND SCHEDULE May 28 th START DATE AND TIME May 28 th The course starts on Saturday May 28 th, with an informal morning coffee from 10.00 11.00. The formal programme starts at 11.00 a.m. COURSE LOCATION May 28 th The course introduction will take place at the Aalto University, Department of Architecture. on floor 2, lecture hall A2 and meeting room A222. We would appreciate to hear your views on the course theme and about your own professional background, any conservation design work, publications or other professional activities you are involved with in relation to conservation etc. ABOUT THE EQUIPMENT YOU NEED DURING THE COURSE You are kindly requested to bring a laptop and a camera, etc, if possible. There will also be limited number of pc:s available during the course. Internet connections will mainly be accessible at the course locations TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS COVERED BY THE COURSE FEE Your travel to and from Helsinki are at your own expense. The bus tour to Seinajoki and Jyvaskyla is included in the course fee. ACCOMODATION We hope that you have managed to arrange for your accommodation in Helsinki. For those who have booked rooms at the Grand Marina, we are going to leave an information package in advance. Please ask for any messages at the reception. ACCOMODATION AND LIVING EXPENSES DURING THE COURSE Expenses during the course are related to the fairly high general cost of living in Finland. We have made the following estimate apart from the hotel costs, you need to reserve for other basic living costs a minimum of app. 540,00 Euro. For further details, please see below. Living costs during the course Living costs, approximately, including partly hotel breakfast, partly breakfast at separate cost c. 4,00 Euro; lunch at average standard lunch restaurant 8,50 Euro; dinner self-prepared or at very simple eatery 6,00-12,00 Euro; one tram/bus drive / day 2,00-4,00 Euro. Average costs approximately 20 Euro/ day x 27 days = 540,00 euros. Living costs included in the course fee The course fee includes coffee, tea, soft drinks and savory/sweet snacks morning and afternoon; a basic tram ticket covering some inevitable travels inside Helsinki; a welcome buffet dinner on May 28th and a farewell buffet dinner on June 22nd;, bus study tour in Helsinki and bus tour to Seinajoki and Jyvaskyla. ABOUT YOUR FREE TIME The second weekend, June 4th-5th, is free, as well as Saturday, June 11th and Sunday, June 19th.
