Typical Rooms Trinity College has a wide variety of student rooms, and it is likely you will experience a range of accommodation types during your time here. The links in the College Plan on this page will take you to information about typical rooms available in each area, as well as the groups of students who are eligible to live there. If you are a prospective student, you will apply for accommodation by completing a form prior to your arrival. We will allocate your room via a ballot based on the information you provide. New undergraduates can see the rooms which are included in their room ballot by clicking on any of the links entitled Undergrad freshers. New graduates should follow the links for Side F freshers. These links will take you to information about the rooms typically included in these ballots, including room rents. If you are a current undergraduate, you will find information on each area which is included in your ballot (for second, third and fourth years, including Scholars) by clicking on the Main Ballot links. Some information about graduate rooms can be found on the Pearce Hostel page, but please also see our graduate hostels booklet for more information about Trinity s graduate accommodation. Students who wish to apply for couples/family accommodation should see our College Flats page. New Court Main Ballot Bishop s Hostel Main Ballot Angel Court Undergrad freshers Side F freshers Blue Boar Court Undergrad freshers Main Ballot Side F freshers Burrell s Field Main Ballot Side F freshers Nevile s Court Main Ballot Great Court Main Ballot Wolfson Building Undergrad freshers Whewell s Court Main Ballot Pearce Hostel Main Ballot Graduate

Undergraduate Fresher rooms Before you come up as a new undergraduate, you will be asked to rank your room preference by rent (lower, medium, and higher bands). The rent varies based on a number of factors, including location, size and facilities (there is not necessarily a certain type of room which you can expect to find in each band). You will be given the opportunity to supply any other relevant information about your accommodation needs or preferences. If there are specific medical requirements relating to accommodation, it is important that you raise this at an early stage to ensure that we will be able to take them into account before we allocate the rooms. 95-113 Freshers Room Rents (2014-15) Angel Court, Blue Boar or Wolfson bedsit with shared bathroom facilities 105-113 En suite bedsit in the Wolfson building Please note that rooms are assigned in an order determined by a random ballot, so depending on where you come in the list, you may not be allocated a room which meets all of your preferences. However, you will find that all student rooms at Trinity are very pleasant, and do remember that you will have the chance to choose your own room (via a ballot system) in future years. 114-140 Larger Angel Court/Blue Boar bedsit, or set. Most have shared bathroom facilities, but some Blue Boar rooms have en suites. ANGEL COURT An Angel Court fresher room. This is a bedsit, with access to a shared bathroom and gyp (basic kitchen). Many freshers are accommodated in this area near Great Gate, in rooms above shops in Trinity Street. These rooms are mostly non-en suite bedsits (single rooms), with a small number of sets. Shared bathroom facilities in College will usually consist of separate shower and toilet rooms. Some staircases also have access to a bath. College gyp rooms are shared basic kitchens to allow for the preparation of simple meals and snacks. This Angel Court gyp room has a microwave and fridge, with counter space to prepare food and a sink for washing up. This gyp is typical of central College facilities.

WOLFSON BUILDING The Wolfson Building is a dedicated fresher accommodation area, with single rooms in a modern building within Blue Boar Court. Most rooms here are en suite bedsits, however there are some cheaper non-en suite rooms available (see room rents table, above). A typical Wolfson en suite room. This Wolfson gyp room has a microwave, toaster, sink and fridge, as well as a full oven with hobs. Kitchens with full cooking facilities are the exception at Trinity, as most students will eat their main meals in Hall. BLUE BOAR This area is reached by climbing steps up from ground level, meaning that the ground floor of Blue Boar is actually closer to first floor level from the streets below. There are several Fresher areas here; while some of these are en suite, the majority have shared bathroom facilities. A Blue Boar bedsit, with a sink in the room but shared bathroom facilities with the rest of the staircase. Shared facilities Students in some Blue Boar areas will have access to full gyp rooms with ovens, similar to those in the Wolfson building. However, most gyp rooms here are more like the basic ones in Angel Court.

Side F Fresher rooms If you are coming to Trinity for the first time as a graduate student, you are a Side F fresher. For your first year, you will be assigned a room in College where possible, rather than in one of our graduate hostels (which are managed by Bidwells on behalf of the College). However, due to the operational requirements of the College, during 2014-15 some students will be offered a room in a graduate hostel or in Pearce Hostel (please see our hostels page for more information about this). Before you come up as a new graduate, you will be asked to give us your rent preferences in advance, ranking the options higher/medium/lower. You may also supply any further relevant information about your accommodation needs or preferences. If you have specific medical requirements relating to accommodation, it is important that you raise this at an early stage to ensure that we will be able to take them into account when allocating rooms. Rooms are assigned according to a ballot, so please be aware that it may not be possible to meet all preferences depending on your position in the list. If your course is longer than 1 year, you will ballot for a room in a graduate hostel for your future years of study (graduate accommodation is typically offered by Trinity for the first 3 years of your postgraduate course). Please see our graduate hostels page for more information. Side F Room Rents (2014-15) 89-109 Non-en suite bedsit/set in a Burrell s Field or Blue Boar Side F staircase. 100-115 117-127 Bedsit with shared facilities in the Burrell s Field House, or en suite bedsit in Blue Boar Set in Z Angel Court or the Burrell s Field House with shared bathroom facilities; en suite bedsit in the Burrell s Field house. College rooms are for single occupation only; if you will be accompanied by a partner and/or children, please see our flats page for information about couples/family accommodation at Trinity College. ANGEL COURT Angel Court Shared Facilities There are toilet and shower/bath rooms on each floor. Angel Court also has basic gyp rooms with a microwave, toaster and kettle for the preparation of simple meals. Graduate students living here eat their main meals in Hall. A number of (non ensuite) sets on a staircase in Angel Court are reserved for Side F freshers; these are large rooms with a separate bedroom and study area. Many rooms here have sloping ceilings and feature fireplaces. All have sinks in the room, and shared bathroom facilities.

BLUE BOAR Shared facilities An en suite Side F bedsit in Blue Boar, falling into the middle price range. Several staircases within Blue Boar (opposite Trinity s Great Gate) are generally designated as Side F areas. A few rooms here have en suite shower rooms, with the majority sharing bathroom facilities. Please note these rooms are not available to Side F students in 2014-15. BURRELL S FIELD Burrell s Field is a large accommodation area situated in quiet gardens across the river from central College. One of the Burrell s Field houses is usually set aside for Side F students; some of the rooms here are en suite, but there are also non-en suite rooms and shared bathroom facilities. The kitchen facilities include ovens with hobs. Sometimes, rooms may also be available elsewhere in Burrell s Field, in a single room in one of the modern accommodation blocks. Please note Burrell s Field is not available to Side F students in 2014-15. The Burrell s Field Side F House A single bedsit in E staircase, Burrell s Field

Burrell s Field (Main Ballot areas) Burrell's Field is accessed through the Fellows' Garden (over the river from central College). Rooms are available for current undergraduates via the main ballot (2 nd, 3 rd and 4 th years), and some are reserved for new Side F graduates (see Side F rooms). Rooms in Burrell s Field are typically well-equipped, and many are en suite. Most rooms are arranged around staircases in purpose-built accommodation blocks or towers, but there are also four houses whose rooms have a more traditional feel. A short walk from the centre of Trinity, Burrell s Field is particularly convenient for departments based along the backs, including those at the University s Sidgwick Site. The Burrell s Field houses are large and pleasant, with communal cooking and dining areas for their residents. There are en suite rooms in every house, but some rooms here have shared bathroom facilities. A modern single set in a tower staircase. An inexpensive, modern Burrell s Field bedsit. There is a sink in the room, and access to a shared bathroom nearby. Burrell s Field Shared Facilities Burrell s Field has well-equipped shared facilities for its residents. Many kitchens have hobs for the preparation of occasional meals. 86-100 100-109 110-127 119-127 Room Rents in Burrell s Field (2014-15) Modern bedsit; shared bathroom facilities Bedsit in a Burrell s Field house; shared facilities Set or bedsit in a Burrell s Field house; an en suite and/or a larger room Set or bedsit in the towers (majority en suite); some double sets.

Nevile s Court Nevile's Court is an attractive 17 th -century court in the centre of Trinity; on one side is the Great Hall, and on the other the Wren Library. A small number of rooms are available here for students via the main ballot, including some double sets. This court is often a popular choice with scholars at the top of the ballot. There are no en suite rooms here but each room has its own sink, with a shared bathroom on the staircase. Rooms in Nevile s Court tend to be full of character, with interesting architectural features. Shared facilities and spaces per week 106-111 Room Rents in Nevile s Court (2014-15) Smaller single set or double set; shared bathroom facilities 120-140 Larger single sets (as pictured); shared bathroom facilities A roomy single set in Nevile s Court, with sloping ceilings and exposed wooden beams.

Great Court Rooms in Great Court are made available via the main ballot, and are a popular choice for senior and junior scholars, as well as students going into their third year. As such, these rooms are unlikely to remain as a choice for students going into their second year. To allow as many undergraduates as possible to experience a Great Court room (if they wish), no student is permitted to choose a room in Great Court for more than one year while they are at Trinity. Very few rooms in Great Court are en suite, but the setting within Trinity s grand 16 th -century court is appealing to those who like the traditional feel. Room Rents in Great Court (2014-15) 89-113 A bedsit (single room), a double set or a smaller single set; shared bathroom facilities The majority of Great Court rooms are non-en suite single sets, meaning rooms with a separate bedroom and main room. Most of these have a sink in the room. 116-135 Set or large bedsit with shared bathroom facilities, or an en suite double set. 145-159 Larger and/or grander single set, nearly all with shared bathroom facilities. NB room descriptions give a rough indication of the types of rooms which are within each price band. Depending on a number of factors, including location/view, rooms of similar sizes may vary in price. There are also a number of double sets in Great Court, one of which has an en suite bathroom. Shared facilities and spaces

Whewell s Court Many second- and third-year students choose to live in Whewell s Court, an attractive 19 th -century courtyard opposite the Great Gate entrance to Trinity. Rooms here are all non-en suite; they are predominantly single sets, with a handful of bedsits and some shared sets (for 2 students who wish to share a living room space). The shared bathroom facilities are situated in the basement below the courts, and there is also a laundry here. Many Whewell s Court rooms have their own personal mini-gyp rooms with a fridge, sink and food preparation area. Space-dependent, there will be a microwave and/or toaster in these rooms as well. Shared facilities All Whewell s Court rooms have shared bathroom facilities but the bedrooms are equipped with a washbasin. Room Rents in Whewell s Court (2014-15) 84-107 Bedsit or double set with shared bathroom facilities; many with mini-gyp rooms. 105-120 Single set, most with gyp rooms included. All have shared bathroom facilities. 120-148 Larger/grander single set, most with a gyp room. Shared bathroom facilities. Whewell s Court sets are pleasant spaces to live arranged around a small central lawn. Larger, pricier sets may have interesting architectural features - like this window seating set into a tower.

Pearce Hostel (Main Ballot areas) Trinity has a number of rooms available for undergraduates and graduates in Pearce Hostel, a building on the other side of Whewell s Court from central College. Rooms are all above street level, and situated in buildings between Jesus Lane and Bridge Street. Rooms are available in C-E Pearce Hostel via the main ballot (for 2 nd, 3 rd and 4 th years). Please see graduate Pearce Hostel, below, for more information about the rooms here which are usually included in the graduate ballot. Room Rents in Pearce Hostel (2014-15) 93-113 Bedsit or set with shared bathroom facilities 113-123 En suite bedsit 120-143 Larger set, some with an en suite and some with shared facilities. This is a single bedsit in Pearce Hostel with shared bathroom facilities. It is at the lower end of the rent range for College rooms. Larger and/or en suite rooms in Pearce Hostel are more expensive. A variety of accommodation types in Pearce Hostel means that rooms here will suit many different students. Full kitchens are provided for the preparation of more substantial meals.

Blue Boar Court (Main Ballot areas) Blue Boar Court is accessed through Whewell s Court (the main entrance to which is opposite Great Gate). It is reached by climbing steps up from ground level, meaning that the ground floor of Blue Boar is actually closer to first floor level from the street. Some areas of Blue Boar are reserved for undergraduate freshers and new Side F freshers, but much of the court is still available in the main ballot for 2 nd, 3 rd and 4 th years. There is a mixture of accommodation here, with rooms available across a range of price bands. En suite and non-en suite rooms can be found, and this is the only area of College with baths in some of its en suite rooms. Basic gyp rooms are the norm; they will have a fridge and kettle plus a microwave and/or toaster (space dependent). Room Rents in Blue Boar (2014-15) 95-114 Bedsit with shared bathroom facilities Rooms in staircases A-H Blue Boar are all similar in style. All of these rooms have an en suite bathroom; around 2/3 have a bath rather than a shower. This bedsit in D staircase has an en suite with bath. 101-131 En suite set or bedsit (with bath or shower) or large set with shared facilities Shared facilities and spaces Elsewhere in Blue Boar Court, the majority of rooms available in the main ballot have shared bathrooms. These Blue Boar bedsits fall into lower to mid-range room charges.

Bishop s Hostel Bishop s Hostel is situated between Great Court and Garrett Hostel Lane. There are a few double sets for students who wish to share a living area (in E and F staircases), but the majority of rooms here are single sets in A and C staircase (pictured, with B staircase in the centre). Many of these rooms have both a private gyp room and en suite bathroom. Bishop s Hostel rooms are very popular at the top of the main ballot, and are likely to be selected by Scholars and third years. Bishop s Hostel Room Rents (2014-15) 87-112 123-137 Room type Double set or bedsit in E/F Bishop s Hostel, most with shared bathroom facilities Bedsit or set in A/C Bishop s Hostel. The majority have a gyp room and/or en suite; some have shared facilities. An attic set in A Bishop s Hostel. This bedroom is adjacent to a spacious living room. Shared facilities and spaces This is a large ground floor bedsit with its own gyp room and en suite.

New Court New Court is a large 19 th -Century courtyard between Great Court and the river Cam. It is being extensively refurbished during the academic year 2014-15, and information will be updated once this project is complete. No rooms are available here during 2014-15, but it is anticipated that the area will rejoin the main ballot in 2015-16.

Graduate Pearce Hostel Graduate Accommodation at Trinity consists of a number of graduate hostels (managed by Bidwells on behalf of the College), and rooms in Pearce Hostel. Ordinarily, around 45 rooms in A and C Pearce Hostel are reserved for graduate students. These rooms are managed by the College directly and maintained by housekeeping staff. Many rooms here are en suite, and all have access to full kitchens with ovens and hobs. During 2014-15, it will be necessary to house some new ( Side F ) graduate students here, and thus room availability via the graduate ballot is reduced. It is currently anticipated that some graduate Pearce Hostel rooms will return to the graduate ballot for 2015-16. A bedsit (single room) in C Pearce Hostel. Rooms here are typically inexpensive, without en suite facilities. These pleasant, modern rooms have access to full kitchen facilities. Room Rents in Graduate Pearce Hostel (2014-15) 88-95 Bedsit with shared bathroom facilities in C Pearce Hostel 95-108 En suite bedsit in A Pearce Hostel 117-120 Larger set in A Pearce hostel bedroom on mezzanine level. All have en suite bathrooms. An en suite set in A Pearce Hostel. This room is at the higher end of the rent range, and is one of several sets with an upstairs (mezzanine) level for the bedroom. Shared facilities and spaces

Graduate Accommodation at Trinity College Graduate students are typically offered accommodation in College-owned properties for the first three years of their postgraduate course. Postgraduate students new to Trinity should see our Side F graduate pages for information about accommodation for postgraduate freshers. Rooms for continuing graduates are assigned via the graduate ballot. The majority of rooms included in this process are in Trinity s graduate hostels, which are managed by Bidwells on behalf of the College. Rents are charged monthly (heating is usually payable quarterly in addition to the rent), and please note that a security deposit will be payable with the first rent instalment. This is refundable at the end of the lease, provided that the property has been left in a satisfactory condition. Some rooms in Pearce Hostel are also usually available via the graduate ballot (please see our graduate Pearce Hostel page for more information). Please also see our Graduate Ballot FAQs page online for more information about how this ballot works. Hostel and College rooms are for single occupation only; if you will be accompanied by a partner and/or children, please see our flats page for information about couples/family accommodation at Trinity College. GRADUATE HOSTELS Many graduate students will be housed in these hostels, which consist of a range of properties across Cambridge. There are a mixture of en suite and non-en suite rooms available and all hostels have full kitchens and a shared laundry. You will find more information about each property below. Approximate prices for graduate hostels in 2014-15 are as follows: - A hostel room in a shared house (most rooms non-en suite, price excludes utility charge): 70-82 - An en suite room in Wessex Place (total price, including utilities): 92-102 PORTUGAL STREET (CB5 8AP/CB5 8AW) AND PORTUGAL PLACE (CB5 8AF) A number of non-en suite hostel rooms are available across several houses in Portugal Street (5 or 6 rooms to each house) and Portugal Place (5 or 8 rooms per house). These roads (off Bridge Street) are approximately 5 minutes walk from the Great Gate entrance to Trinity. Their proximity to the centre of town, and to College itself, makes these rooms a popular choice every year. It also places these houses in a busy location; although few vehicles use the roads, nearby shops and restaurants (as well as the Maypole pub) mean there is usually activity in this area throughout the day and into the evenings. WESSEX PLACE (CB4 3BL) Recently acquired by Trinity, and fully renovated in 2012 for student occupation, this modern hostel has 41 en suite rooms for graduate students. There are 4 large kitchens for the residents to share. Situated near Castle Street, and approximately 10 minutes walk from College, this hostel is an easy distance from town. Unlike the other College hostels listed here, rents at Wessex Place are inclusive of heating. This hostel also offers lockable storage units for students bikes, which can be hired by students living here for a small annual fee.

39 VICTORIA PARK (CB4 3EJ) Slightly beyond Wessex Place, around 15-20 minutes walk from town, this house in a quiet residential area has 5 rooms over 2 floors. Within the shared space, there is a fully fitted kitchen with dining area and lounge seating; there is also a shared bathroom on each floor. In terms of local facilities, there are convenience stores and a number of shops and takeaways nearby (along Victoria Road and around Mitcham s Corner). 12 GLISSON ROAD (CB1 2HD) There are 7 rooms in this hostel, 1 of which is en suite. There is a shared bathroom on each floor (3 in total), and a fully fitted kitchen with dining area and lounge. This is further from the centre of town than most hostels (around 20 minutes walk from Trinity), but there are useful amenities nearby on Regent Street. The Mill Road area, around 5 minutes walk away, also has many pubs, restaurants and international food shops. This is the closest hostel to the train station and is convenient for south Cambridge, including Addenbrooke s and the Education faculty. 20 VICTORIA STREET (CB1 1JP) This is a 3-storey, 6-bedroom terraced house near Parker s Piece, less than 15 minutes walk from Trinity College. There is a kitchen and living room to the ground floor, with shared bathrooms on the first and second floors. This hostel is ideally situated for the Downing and New Museums Sites on Downing Street. For shopping, in addition to being close to the main town centre, it is very close to the Grafton Centre and only a short walk from Mill Road. 18 NEWTON ROAD (CB2 8AL) At around half an hour s walk from Trinity College, this is the furthest hostel from town. It is in a quiet area beyond the University Botanical Gardens, and is handiest for departments in South Cambridge (such as the Education Faculty) and for Addenbrooke s. There are 17 rooms in total (over 3 floors), 5 of which have en suite facilities. There is a shared kitchen and living area to the ground floor, and there are also bathrooms and kitchenettes on each upper floor.
