Introduction Jonathan Sergison In the previous semester (Autumn 2011) the studio began an ambitious and wide ranging study of European cities which considered strategies for the their growth through low rise densification. We are interested in the manner in which different cities can attend to this need; to absorb rising populations, contemporary housing requirements, better working conditions and a need for growth to be contained within existing boundaries rather than forever spreading outwards. This task requires solutions to be found that are specific and relevant to demands made by the city in which the work is situated. We are not interested in advocating universal solutions but rather in finding strategies that are relevant to the unique set of conditions encountered in a place. And because we are dealing with the European city this inevitably means a complex history and urban inheritance. The city chosen for projects in this semester is Zurich. In many ways it is the antithesis of London. While it is the largest city in Switzerland it is a fraction of the size of London. One of the few things it shares with this city is that it is currently facing a housing crisis which is not of the same numerical dimension as London but due to it s rising population, and the discrepancy between supply and demand is very problematic. The typical contemporary level of apartment vacancy at a given moment in Zurich is 0.05% of the housing stock. Working on a number of sites that can be seen as examples of different and representative urban characteristics, projects explored realistic and appropriate solutions for the future densification needs of the city of Zurich. As in the past our work was supported by different experts and expertise. In this instance a number of people from the Architecture and Urban Planning Department of the city of Zurich. 4 5
