INTRODUCTION The new year has started with a phase f re-examinatin and internal assessment fr the 51% Calitin. This perid fllwed issues faced after a December 2014 letter t the Head f the Partnership fr Jamaica (PFJ), the Prime Minister, in relatin t the handling f the Natinal Husing Trust/Outameni matter. The three-mnth perid has seen cnsistent mnthly meetings with fcus n discussins arund the Calitin s structure, rganizatin, membership, gvernance and sustainanbilty. In additin, it included assessing the actins and psitins taken by the Calitin in the Natinal Husing Trust/Outameni matter with relatin t accuntablity, transparency and gd gvernance; and the subsequent impact fr and the perspectives f members. Prcesses f cmmunicatin and cnsultatin were analyzed and frmalized, thereby enhancing decisin-making within the Calitin. Fr the Calitin, the first quarter fr the year 2015 has been deemed an active ne, with the Organizatin engaging in a number f wmen s related activities, steady capacity building and advancing advcacy actins and initiatives. In between activities the Calitin engaged in several Steering Cmmittee Meetings increasing capacity and enhancing wrking relatinships between members. Cming ut f this critical perid geared mainly twards reflectin, slidarity and grwth, the fllwing salient pints were raised: Fcus n cnsensus building in the 51% Calitin. Fcus n cre issues f the 51% Calitin, namely gender equality and equity fr sustainable develpment, wmen s representatin and participatin in decisinmaking (with a fcus n qutas), and issues f accuntability, transparency and gd gvernance. Ensuring the 51% Calitin has its wn vice and chices n the issues fcused n. Membership f the Calitin: It is recmmended that individual members f umbrella rganizatins decide whether r nt they can supprt the actins and psitins f the 51% Calitin. ACTIVITIES JANUARY HIGH IMPACT - LOW STRESS COMMUNICATION WORKSHOP Thrugh an invitatin extended by the Cuncil f Vluntary Scial Services (CVSS) t the Wmen s Resurce and Outreach Centre (WROC), n January 15th the Calitin Secretariatiat tk part in a wrkshp entitled High Impact - Lw Stress Cmmunicatin - Say Mre with Less and be Heard at the CVSS Natinal Vlunteer Centre. During the three-hur sessin guest presenter - Shannn Whissell, Cmmunicatins, Branding and Marketing Advisr t CVSS and CUSO Internatinal Vlunteer - spke n hw cmmunicatins, branding and marketing wrk tgether; hw t make cmmunicatins easier and mre effective; and the tls t aid in cmmunicatins planing and strytelling. FEBRUARY COMMONWEALTH SECRETARIAT CONSULTATIONS FOR A RESILIENCE PROFILING EXERCISE On February 26 th the Calitin Secretariat briefly tk part in a civil sciety cnsultatin n the Resilience Prfile f Jamaica. The prject is part f the Cmmnwealth s wrk prgramme n Strengthening the Resilience f Small States and was agreed and endrsed by leaders in varius fra, including the Third Cmmnwealth Glbal Biennial Cnference n Small States that tk place in Saint Lucia in March 2014. The cnsultatin s aim was t engage the Civil Sciety sectr t gain perspectives n the vulnerability/resilience prfile f the cuntry with respect t scial, ecnmic and envirnmental gvernance. With discussins t take place n: Perspectives n structural elements determining decisin-making in sciety such as traditin, histry, and infrmatin, cmmunicatin and technlgy (ICT) readiness; Sectral perspectives n what has been the dminant plicy challenges ver the past several years cvering the ecnmic, scial and envirnmental, such as natural disasters, urbanizatin, crruptin and emplyment; and The extent t which gverning systems such as strategic capacity, the electral system, plicy implementatin and the state as an institutin, play a critical rle in the resilience, r lack theref, f the cuntry. The meeting began with remarks by Dr. Denny Lewis-Byne, frm the Ecnmic Plicy Divisin f the Cmmnwealth Secretariat, wh set ut the meeting s bjectives. This was fllwed by an intrductry presentatin by Jean Paul Fabri, Cnsultant, Cmmnwealth Secretariat which detailed the assessment framewrk. Pints mentined: plitical, scial, ecnmic envirnments; creating pprtunities fr small states; key aspect: imprving gvernance and assessing gvernance meaningfully; need fr plicy changes. The cnsultatin prcess then tk place, invlving the filling ut f a 60-page questinnaire regarding the abvementined areas f discussin. Hwever, due t time cnstraints the Calitin representative was nt able t particpate in the extensive assessment. The Calitin lks frward t attending the reginal wrkshp where the utput and findings which help t determine the requirements fr building resilience in Jamaica will be disseminated. MARCH INTERNATIONAL WOMEN S DAY EXPO 2015 March 7 th saw the secnd staging f the Internatinal Wmen s Day Exp, by WROC and partners. The Internatinal Wmen s Day Exp 2015, themed Wmen & Girls: Making It Happen, featured a shwcase f presentatins relevant t wmen s issues related t health and wellness, financial empwerment and security. The Exp, which was held at the University f the West Indies (UWI), Mna Funders Park, a day befre Internatinal Wmen s Day, cmmemrated WROC s 32 nd anniversary, and saw exhibitins by ver 40 rganizatins, including the Jamaica Cancer Sciety, Eden Gardens and the Hair Lss Clinic f Jamaica. Objectives included empwering girls and wmen n issues which relate t their develpment, as well as raising awareness abut the imprtance f wmen s health and rights and the varius services available t assist them in making infrmed chices. The day s guest presenter was H.E. Mathu Jyini, High Cmmissiner f Suth African High Cmmissin, wh presented n, Wmen & Girls: The Pwer Within. Other presenters included: Her Wrship the Mayr, Senatr, Cuncillr Angela Brwn Burke JP (Develpment Dwntwn), Rbert Finzi-Smith (Security), Dr. Tracey-Ann Brwn (Health and Medical) and Buffy Campbell (Fitness and Wellness). In supprt f n-ging wrk n wmen s empwerment, and in celebratin f Internatinal Wmen s Day, Nadine Spencer, Ambassadr t the Representatin Prject, alng with cmmunity partners, hsted a debut screening f the award-winning dcumentary Miss Representatin in Kingstn, Jamaica, n Mnday, March 23 rd at the UWI Mna. A number f members f the 51% Calitin attended the event and participated - thrugh cmments and suggestins - in the fllw up dicussin segment. These members included: Dr. Marcia Frbes (Individual Member), Justine Harrisn (Calitin Secretariat), Drthy Whyte (WROC), Lrna Lee (WROC), and Nadeen Spence (YWLI). Miss Taitu Hern representing UN Wmen Jamaica als participated. Written and directed by Jennifer Siebel Newsm, Miss Representatin expses hw mainstream media cntribute t the under-representatin f wmen in psitins f pwer and influence in America. The film challenges the media's limited and ften disparaging prtrayals f females f all ages, which makes it difficult fr wmen t achieve leadership psitins and fr the average wman t feel empwered. The film includes stries frm teenage girls and interviews with famus pliticians, jurnalists, entertainers, activists and academics like Cndleezza Rice, Lisa Ling, Nancy Pelsi, Katie Curic, Jane Fnda, Rsari Dawsn, Cry Bker, Jacksn Katz, Jean Kilburne, and Glria Steinem. The film ffers startling facts and statistics that leave audiences shaken and armed with new perspectives. Fllwing the screening, issues presented by the film were then discussed by the audience and a panel cmprising: Strm Saulter - Film Directr, Kay Osbrne - CEO f Kay Osbrne Assciates Ltd., Aubyn Hill - CEO f Crprate Strategies Ltd., Dr. Pamela Appelt - Retired Citizenship Curt Judge, Canada, Kamina Jhnsn Smith - Attrney and Senatr, Marlene Malah Frte - Senatr, Pat Ramsay - AL Harvard Fellw 2014, Directr, Internatinal Wmen s Frum. Jamaicans need t speak up, in cases f inequality, abuse and sexual vilence. The need fr the gvernment t use traditinal media fr PSAs t address issues.
