Federigo Tocchini 11/12/1848 to 8/20/1913 Federigo Tocchini was born in Italy and although it is believed he was from Porcari or possibly Capannori, I could find no birth information in either place so he was more than likely from any of the many little towns nearby. He married Dorotea Del Carlo on February 16 th, 1874 in Capannori (Fraz. Porcari), according to documentation found at the local church in Porcari and came to America on May 26 th, 1903 at the age of 55. Sailing upon the Napolitan Prince, he arrived in San Francisco with sons Armindo, 16 and Daniele, 13. Although I could not find record of it, it appears three other sons Giuseppi, Aristide and Arideo had already come over. Residences are mentioned as being 2636 Hyde Street and 526 Broadway in San Francisco. The sixth son, Attillio moved to Sao Paolo, Brazil. After a few years, the family moved to Santa Rosa and lived at 216 Hewitt Street, with the exception of Giuseppe who remained in San Francisco. Federico lived and operated a grocery store at his residence until his death on August 20 th 1913 at the age of 64.
Dorotea Del Carlo 2/6/1852 to 12/7/1932 Dorotea was born in the town of Porcari to Domenico and Zabella. Her God parents are listed as being Lorenzo Del Carlo and Assunta Del Carlo, most likely being her uncle and aunt. She had one sister, Ermegilda. She was 52 when she came to America. There is some reference that she moved to San Francisco for a time after the passing of Federico and lived with son Giuseppe at 2636 Hyde Street. She soon came back to Santa Rosa and made her home with son Daniele until her death in 1932.
Aristide Tocchini 7/4/1874 to 5/19/1942 Aristide (Tide) was the oldest of the Tocchini sons and was born on July the 4 th, 1874 and came to America in 1898 at the age of 24(Ancestry.com). He lived in San Francisco for a time before coming to Santa Rosa. He never married and I believe he owned and ran a ranch on Olivet road. He use to drive into town every Sunday for lunch and he would bring a gallon of wine with him. It has been mentioned that he and Jack London were rumored to be drinking buddies. I did a little timeline check on their ages and indeed they were only a few years apart who knows? Aristide died at the General Hospital of a ruptured appendix in 1942 at the age of 67.
Giuseppe Tocchini 9/15/1874 to 3/10/1949 Giuseppe was the second oldest son and was born in 1874. He appears to have come to San Francisco with two other brothers just prior to the rest of the family arriving. He lived on Hyde Street and also on Broadway with two of his brothers, Aristide and Arideo. I believe he went into the grocery business and did very well. He married Assunta Lazzarini and they had five children, Fred, Hazel, Remo, Evelyn and Harry. He remained in San Francisco until his death at the age of 74.
Attilio Tocchini 1881 to 19?? Attilio was the third oldest son and since he never came to America as the others did, I have less information on him. He either met someone from Brazil and moved there or decided to go to Brazil and met his future wife, I believe though that Anita was a native of Brazil. He moved to Brazil in the early 1900 s. He and Anita had two children, Gerardo and Jone. Attilio came to Sebastopol at one point for a surprise party for Daniel and Marie but his life was spent in Sao Paolo, Brazil where there are still many Tocchinis.
Arideo (Henry) Tocchini 8/20/1884 to 7/31/1942 Arideo was the 4 th son in age and arrived in San Francisco with his two older brothers, Aristide and Giuseppe. He came to America in 1899 according to Ancestory.com. After living in San Francisco for a period of time he and Aristide moved to Santa Rosa. Arideo would marry Assunta Forni and have five children, Emma, Anita, Dante, Lida and Giulio (Jake). They lived at 750 Davis St. across from brother Daniele. Jake was to carry on the family name but died at the age of 26 with what was called 3 rd degree pneumonia. Arideo and brother Daniele became prune ranchers initially, and then grocery store owners at 114 Fourth Street in Santa Rosa, but fate lead them to the theater business and at one point they owned all the theaters in Santa Rosa and a couple in Petaluma and were quite prominent businessmen in the area. Arideo died in 1942 at the age of 57.
Armindo Tocchini 9/18/1888 to 2/25/1930 Armindo was the second to the youngest son and came to America in 1903 with his brother Daniele, mother and father. They met up with their brothers Aristide, Attillio and Giuseppe in San Francisco. After moving to Santa Rosa, Armindo married Nella. I m not sure what her maiden name is at this point. They never had any children. I believe they were also grocery store owners. Armindo was hospitalized for several months in Colfax where I am told he tried to escape on several occasions. After about five months of illness he eventually succumbed to tuberculosis in 1930.
Daniele (Papa) Tocchini 3/21/1890 to 6/3/1974 Daniele, 13 was the youngest of the sons upon arrival in New York in 1903 with Mom, Dad and brother Armindo. The family then moved to San Francisco. On April 17 th, 1912 at the age of 22, Dan married Maria Santini and in 1913 moved to Santa Rosa, living at 155 9 th st. They had seven children, Evelyn, who died at just over a year of age and Norma, Leonora, Doris, Thelma, Gloria and Daniel (Junior). The family initially moved to Hewitt street where Federico operated a grocery store out of the home. Dan tried his hand at prune ranching initially, and then went into the produce business, owning a grocery store with Armindo on lower Fourth Street in Santa Rosa. Circumstances later demanded that he and Arideo take over a theater that they had bought as an investment which turned out to be a fortuitist move at that time, as talkies were just coming to be, and the business boomed. He later went on to buy or build many other theaters and became quite a successful businessman within the county. My father just wasn't much of a drinker. Maybe, because a long time ago, when he bought the El Rey theater, he had stomach problems. That was when he sold the Roxy in Santa Rosa. He was going to retire and did for a short time, then built the theater in Sebastopol. He did always keep a bottle of grappa on the top shelf just in case an old Italian friend or relative dropped in. Otherwise, I only remember seeing him drink a couple of times. Gloria Tocchini Smith
Giuseppe Santini wife Anunziata (Lotti) Santini April/1867 to 10/15/1928 3/25/1868 to 4/2/1946 daughter son Maria (Santini) Tocchini Alessandro Santini 10/28/1894 to 6/6/1963 12/11/1895 to 6/3/1958 On May 6 th, 1905 Giuseppe (36) arrived at Ellis Island with his Sister-in-Law Veneranda. Veneranda would soon be with husband and brother of Giuseppe, Rafaello who came over at an earlier date. It would be another four years before Giuseppe s wife, Anunziata (Lotti) Santini would set sail aboard La Bretagne with the kids, Maria and Alessandro who were 14 and 13, respectively. Maria would soon get a job working at the Ghiradelli factory where she would meet husband to be, Daniele Tocchini. They would marry in San Francisco on April 28 th, 1912. Witnesses names are listed as Eda Bruschini and P. Del Carlo. Alessandro would later marry Lida Tocchini, daughter of Arideo Tocchini and Assunta (Forni) Tocchini. Though Al and Lida, and Maria and Daniel would move to Santa Rosa, Giuseppe and Anunziata remained in San Francisco until Giuseppe s death in 1928. Then Anunziata moved to Santa Rosa until hear death in 1946. Both are buried in the Italian Cemetery in Colma. Note: Funeral services for Giuseppe Santini were provided by Valente MariniPerata in San Francisco, 4840 Mission St (415-333 0161) They said that he had listed his mothers first name as Filomena.
