FIRST GENERATION P Peter Vermilyea, (Identified by Riker as the son of #52, Fourth Generation, however this family is located in Canada with a Peter Vermilyea that appears to be their son #129) born about 1787, married Margaret, daughter of Ralph and Aleta (Sebring) Schenck who was born February 7, 1788 in New York, died January 27, 1861. Gass, 73 of 51 Dale Road, Gouverneur, retired businessman and village and town official who died Friday morning, Aug. 5, 1983 in Edward John Noble Hospital were Monday, Aug. 8 at 1 p. m. in Riverside Cemetery. Arrangements were with Burr-Green Funeral Home. Memorial donations may be made in his name to Gouverneur Rescue Squad or the local hospital. Surviving are his wife, Edna, a son, David, Huntsville, Ala., a daughter Mrs. William (Beverly) Miles, New Carlisle, Ohio; five grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Arnold (Evelyn) Broggi, Woodstock; a brother Frank B. Mr. Gass married the former Edna Clark of Gouverneur at Cape Vincent. He served with the New York State Police from 1940 until retiring in 1951 as a sergeant. The couple moved from Tupper Lake to Gouverneur in 1951 when Mr. Gass became associated with Walter J. Christensen in the local G. & C. Hardware and Appliance firm which they operated until selling the business to Joseph Clancy in 1981. Mr. Gass served as a Republican village trustee for seven terms, was a town councilman for eight years and served as a town justice for three years.
