Joan Harzich-Sipich performed as a soloist, singing Moj Osijek, and as a duet with Joe Gornick, of Sino vi Orchestra fame, singing Waltz Croatian which includes Nate Mislim. Gornick also gave his beautiful rendition of Dalmatinski Sajkas. Both Gornick and Sipich opened the program singing the American National Anthem and the Croatian National Anthem. Joan Sipich and Joe Gornick can also be heard on YouTube. The Sloboda Junior Tamburitzans Alumni, our guest orchestra, again directed by Joe Gornick, gave a great performance. Besides the beautiful Croatian music, the audience was entertained with American music including Begin the Beguine and Embraceable You. Joe Grlica, with Sloboda Orchestra, performed as Elvis singing Can t Help Falling In Love With You. The finale was great with both orchestras combined playing Hungarian Beauties! Throop St. 6:35 PM START $500 COVERALL St. Gabriel Youth Group Maintains Prayer Vigil On Holy Thursday, March 24th, St. Gabriel Parish celebrated the Evening Mass of the Lord's Supper. At the end of Mass, a solemn procession took place, that brought the Eucharist to the beautifully decorated altar of repose. The tradition of the Catholic Church is that people then pray silently before the Blessed Sacrament. The parish Youth Group made a commitment that they would maintain a prayer vigil that night, until the Church closed. We sincerely thank our Youth Group for their strong faith and for making this such a spiritually meaningful time! Pictured: Three Youth Group members, Nick and Matt McCarthy and Emily McManus, kneeling in prayer during the vigil. Living Stations of the Cross at Santa Lucia During the Lenten season, the students of Santa Lucia School present their interpretation of the Stations of the Cross each Friday night in church. On Friday, March 18, the 7th & 8th class presented a beautiful evening of this traditional Lenten devotion. In full costume, with beautiful music, the Junior High acted out the last few hours of Christ's life for the school families and parishioners. These weekly student Lenten performances are unique to Santa Lucia. The school children are proud of their presentations and have made the weekly Stations of the cross so much more meaningful for all who attend. Friends of the Chicago Rivers Overflow Action Days At the Wed., March 23, 2016 meeting of the Cook County Board of Commissioners, Commissioner John P. Daley introduced a resolution in support of the Friends of the Chicago Rivers Overflow Action Days initiative. The initiative is aimed at minimizing the amount of water that goes into the sewer system. If concentrated and timed properly, the Overflow Action Days initiative has the ability to offset combined sewer overflows throughout the Chicago River System. Overflow Action Days are necessary because the regional combined sewage system cannot always handle the amount of rain that falls in addition to the daily load of sewage and industrial waste. An initiative like Overflow Action Days helps play an enormous role in protecting our rivers and our water supply. Commissioner Daley praised the initiative saying The Friends of the Chicago River have been working to help improve the health of the Chicago River since 1979 and we can support them in their efforts by participating in Overflow Action Days. Men s Softball League at Donovan Donovan Park, 3620 S. Lituanica, is looking for interested teams to participate in their upcoming Men's Friday Night 16" Softball League. MAN WHO ADVERTISES HIS BUSINESS HAS ONE Page 6 - BRIDGEPORT NEWS Community Banking Week - April 3rd through 9th, 2016 Whether located in small towns, suburbia or big-city neighborhoods, community banks improve America s community. They use local dollars to help families purchase homes, buy cars, finance college and build financial security. By driving local economies and creating local jobs, community banks are an integral part of our financial system and play a key role in our nation s economic recovery. COMMUNITY BANKS: BIG WHERE IT MATTERS...OUR COMMUNITIES. Here are some other fun facts about community banks: Community banks constitute 96 percent of all banks! Of all U.S. banking organizations, 88.2 percent have assets under $1 billion and almost 50 percent have assets under $250 million; There are more than 600 counties almost one out of every five U.S. counties that have no other physical banking offices except those operated by community banks; There are more than 51,000 community bank locations nationwide; Community banks employ 700,000 Americans and create countless jobs thanks to their role in lending to small businesses and agricultural enterprises; Community banks hold more than $3.8 trillion in assets, $3.1 trillion in deposits, and $2.6 trillion in loans to consumers, small businesses and the agricultural community; Community banks make more than 50 percent of small business loans; Community banks make 90 percent of agricultural loans; More than 2,500 community banks have been in business for over 100 years; The oldest community bank is in Rhode Island. It s 215 years old, which means that it opened the same year that John Adams was elected president and Volta created the first modern battery! How are Community Banks Different? Community banks' boards of directors are made up of local citizens who want to advance the interests of the towns and cities where they live and where their banks do business; Most community bank loans benefit the neighborhoods where depositors live and work; Research has shown average fees for checking accounts and other depository services are lower at community banks than at large, multi-state institutions; Community banks offer a wide range of banking services and products designed to meet the needs of consumers and business including: Anytime, anywhere electronic banking; Automated teller machines, often with little or no surcharge fees; Credit and debit cards with competitive rates and features; Competitive mortgage- and consumer-loan products; Competitive checking, saving and investment products and rates; and Small business and agricultural lending. Need a Reason to Bank Locally? Here are Seven... 1. Community bankers focus attention on the needs of local families, businesses and farmers. Conversely, many of the nation's megabanks are structured to place a priority on serving large corporations. 2. Unlike many larger banks that may take deposits in one state and lend in others, community banks channel most of their loans to the neighborhoods where their depositors live and work, helping to keep local communities vibrant and growing. 3. Community bankers are generally accessible to their customers on-site. CEOs at megabanks are often headquartered in office suites, away from daily customer dealings. 4. Community bankers are typically deeply involved in local community affairs, while large-bank officers are likely to be detached physically and emotionally from the communities where their branches are located. 5. Many community banks are willing to consider character, family history and discretionary spending in making loans. 6: Megabanks, on the other hand, often apply impersonal qualification criteria, such as credit scoring, to all loan decisions without regard to individual circumstances. Community bankers offer nimble decision-making on business loans because decisions are made locally. Megabanks must often convene loan-approval committees in another state. 7: Because community banks are themselves small businesses, they understand the needs of small-business owners. Their core concern is lending to small businesses and farms. The core concern of the mega banks is corporate America. Check out the below advertisements from two of our neighborhood bank advertisers: South Central Bank offering Home Mortgage Specials and Washington Federal Bank for Savings offering a Great CD Rate! Remember shopping local is what keeps our neighborhood strong...that includes using a community bank for all your banking needs. So Bank, Shop & Dine Locally!
