Descendants of Christian and Catharina (Erichsen) Nielsen Generation 1 1. CHRISTIAN 2 NIELSEN (Hans 1 ) 1 was born on 29 Feb 1732 in Hasselberg, Schleswig-Flensburg, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany 2. He died on 16 Jan 1801 in Rabenholz, Schleswig-Flensburg, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany 2, 3. He married Anna Catherina Erichsen, daughter of Hinrich Erichsen and Trude on 17 Jan 1753 in Gelting, Schleswig-Flensburg, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany (Pastor: Ulrich-Anton Feddersen 4, 5 ). She was born about 1726 in Grimsnis, Schleswig-Flensburg, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany 4. She died on 17 Aug 1808 in Rabenholz, Schleswig-Flensburg, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany 4, 6. Christian Nielsen 1 was buried on 19 Jan 1801 in St. Katherine's Lutheran Church Cemetery, Gelting, Germany 7. Notes for Christian Nielsen: [source: Martensen, 1997]. Christian's mother, Magdalena Elisabeth, died at childbirth and he was raised by her sister Anna Petersen, wife of Christian Petersen, who was a vogt [overseer, steward] at Röst and was a good man. His father Hans marries again, but Christian remains with his aunt and uncle in Röst. He had a cousin there who was only a year older than him. Apparently there was someone in the neighborhood who also had recently given birth and Christian's aunt and uncle approached her to ask whether she would consider being a wet nurse to Christian. She agreed and indeed was able to produce enough breast milk to satisfy both Christian and her own little baby girl. In 1796, Christian Nielsen (farmer) was listed as one of the freed serfs who received a parcel of land from the noble estate of Priesholz following the abolition of serfdom in Denmark. Anna Catherina Erichsen 4, 5 was buried on 21 Aug 1808 in St. Katherine's Lutheran Church Cemetery, Gelting, Germany 13. Notes for Anna Catherina Erichsen: At the time of Catharina's death, her son Hans Hinrich wrote that "... his mother was always very religious in her life. The carpenter Jürgensen from Gelting built her coffin. Their neighbor Asmussen wanted to drive the hearse to the cemetery, which apparently was kept at the pastor's residence in Gelting, so they had to go there and bring it back. Following the hearse was the pastor and his driver, then the wagon with the flowers, and then the mourners either on foot or horseback. Following the hearse on the trip from Rabenholz to Gelting was the pastor and his driver, then the wagon with the flowers, and then the mourners either on foot or horseback. After the funeral and burial, the mourners and especially the coffin bearers were invited to the mourning house for coffee. After an hour, all left. [Source: Martensen, 1997] Christian Nielsen and Anna Catherina Erichsen had the following children: 2. i. Christian acquired the farm about 1796 when serfdom was abolished and Gut Priesholz (estate Priesholz) was parceled out. [source: Volker Nielsen, personal communication, 2011]. HANS ADOLPH 4 NIELSEN (Hans Hinrich 3, Christian 2, Hans 1 ) 1, 2, 4, 14 was born in 1786 in Rabenholz, Schleswig-Flensburg, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany 2, 4, 15. He was buried on 03 Jan 1858 in St. Katherine's Lutheran Church Cemetery, Gelting, Germany 22. Notes for Hans Adolph Nielsen: Hans Adolph was listed as the owner of the family property in 1818 and was identifed as a "Hufner" or farmer. After the death of Hans' wife Anna Margaretha in 1851, Hans lived with his eldest surviving son Hans Nikolaus (who was incapacitated by a childhood brain disease) in the "altenteil" that had been only constructed in 1850. An "altenteil" was a cottage on the property where parents often lived "in retirement" after turning over the estate to a child. The rest of the children (Hans' daughter Page 3 of 12

Descendants of Christian and Catharina (Erichsen) Nielsen Generation 3 (con't) lived "in retirement" after turning over the estate to a child. The rest of the children (Hans' daughter Margaretha & husband Asmus, plus presumably Hans' sons Adolph, Conrad, & Dietrich) lived in the old residence of the farm, which was apparently built before 1710 and in need of repair or replacement. [Source: Martensen, 1997] Anna Margaretha Henningsen 14, 15, 27 was buried on 24 Jan 1851 in St. Katherine's Lutheran Church Cemetery, Gelting, Germany 13. Hans Adolph Nielsen and Anna Margaretha Henningsen had the following children: i. HANS CHRISTIAN 5 NIELSEN 15 was born on 16 Mar 1821 in Rabenholz, Schleswig-Flensburg, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany 15. He died on 06 Apr 1821 in Rabenholz, Schleswig-Flensburg, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany 15. Notes for Hans Christian Nielsen: Hans Christian only lived for three weeks after his birth. [Source: Martensen, 1997]. ii. MARGARETHA DOROTHEA NIELSEN 2, 15, 23, 24 was born on 02 Apr 1822 in Rabenholz, Schleswig-Flensburg, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany 2, 23. She died on 31 Oct 1866 in Rabenholz, Schleswig-Flensburg, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany 2, 23. She married Asmus Thomsen, son of Thomsen in 1856 in Sterup, Schleswig-Flensburg, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany 2, 23. He was born on 14 Dec 1817 in Sterup, Schleswig-Flensburg, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany 2, 23. He died on 03 Jul 1866 in Rabenholz, Schleswig-Flensburg, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany 2, 23, 25. Notes for Margaretha Dorothea Nielsen: Daughter of Hans Adolph and Anna Margaretha (Henningsen) Nielsen. Margaretha's father writes in his chronicle (pg 35) that he and his wife decided that Margaretha would inherit the property, partly because they felt she would be best suited to care for her "moronic" (Ger. schwachsinnige) brother Hans Nikolaus (a result of some brain disease in childhood). After the death of her husband Asmus in July 1866, Margaretha writes in her chronicle (pg 41) that since she would not be able to manage the farm itself she would enter into a lease with her brother Dietrich Nielsen in November of 1866 to manage the farm beginning in May 1867. Because Dietrich intends on marrying in the fall of 1866, Margaretha plans on their moving in to the residence, partly because she worries that she lives alone with her two little girls. Towards the end of 1866, she begins to experience chest pains and is of the opinion that she will not live through the winter. She makes arrangements (pg 42) for her two daughters to live with her two brothers-inlaw, Asmus and Jes-Jakob Thomsen, who lived in Sterup and Kalleby respectively. Furthermore, both brothers-inlaw entered into an agreement with Dietrich Nielsen that his lease of the family farm would expire upon the wedding of Margaretha's oldest daughter (Anna) and then she and her husband would resume control of the farm. Dietrich consequently managed the farm for 12 years until Anna's marriage to Nikolaus Martensen in 1879. Descendants of Christian and Catharina (Erichsen) Nielsen Generation 3 (con't) iii. HANS NIKOLAUS NIELSEN 15, 27 was born on 27 Nov 1827 in Rabenholz, Schleswig-Flensburg, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany 15. He died in 1898 15. Notes for Hans Nikolaus Nielsen: Hans Hinrich's chronicle notes that Hans Nikolaus developed a "brain disease" (Ger. gehirnkrankheit) early in his childhood and remained an "idiot" (Ger. schwachsinnig) throughout his life. [Source: Martensen, 1997] iv. ADOLPH HINRICH NIELSEN 15, 27, 28 was born on 22 May 1831 in Rabenholz, Schleswig-Flensburg, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany 15, 28. He died on 19 Feb 1884 in Buhskoppel, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany (Never married 15 ). Fact: 19 Mar 1865 in Struxdorf, Schleswig-Flensburg, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany (Listed as sponsor for nephew Adolph Nielsen's baptism. 28 ) He was buried in St. Katherine's Lutheran Church Cemetery, Gelting, Germany 29. Notes for Adolph Hinrich Nielsen: Adolph Hinrich apparently never married and lived with his younger brother, Dietrich, in Buhskoppel. [Source: Martensen, 1997]. v. DIETRICH AUGUST NIELSEN 15, 27, 30, 31 was born on 25 Oct 1836 in Rabenholz, Schleswig-Flensburg, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany 15, 30, 31. He died on 20 Feb 1908 in Buhskoppel, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany 15, 31. He married Magdalena Christina Jensen on 07 Jun 1867 15, 31. She was born on 10 Feb 1844 in Rabel, Schleswig-Flensburg, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany 15, 31. She died on 05 Oct 1931 in Buhskoppel, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany 15, 31. Dietrich August Nielsen 15, 27, 30, 31 was baptized on 28 Nov 1836 in Gelting, Schleswig-Flensburg, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany 30. He was buried in St. Katherine's Lutheran Church Cemetery, Gelting, Germany 29. Notes for Dietrich August Nielsen: Dietrich's niece Anna (Thomsen) Martensen assumed the control of the Nielsen family farm upon her marriage in 1879 to Nikolaus Martensen. Following the deaths of Anna's parents in 1866 (Asmus & Margaretha Nielsen Thomsen), Dietrich apparently operated the farm on a 12-year lease until 1879. [Source: Martensen, 1997, pg 35a]. vi. CONRAD PETER HEINRICH NIELSEN 14, 15, 27, 32 was born on 25 Oct 1836 in Rabenholz, Schleswig-Flensburg, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany 14, 15, 32, 33.
