NASW Social Work Pioneers ABOUT THE PIONEERS The NASW Social Work Pioneer Program was created to honor members of the social work profession who have contributed to the evolution and enrichment of the profession. The Pioneer Program identifies and recognizes individuals whose unique dedication, commitment, and determination have improved social and human conditions. Pioneers are role models for future generations of social workers. Their contributions are reflected in every aspect of the profession, as well as in the establishment of social policies and human services programs. They have accomplished this through practice, teaching, writing, research, program development, administration, advocacy, legislation, and election to public office. Being elected by one s peers as an NASW Social Work Pioneer is one of the profession s highest honors. PLANNING COMMITTEE Bernice Catherine Harper, LLD, ACSW, Chair Dorothy V. Congratulations to the NASW Social Work Pioneers on your 20th Anniversary. I am so proud of each and every one of you. I continue to remember with great fondness Ruth Irelan Knee and Mark G. Battle. Bonita Davis In Memory of Laura Nichols, my first social work supervisor who persuaded me to attend a social work program at Bryn Mawr College. Laura was the first African-American professor in the social work program at the University of Pennsylvania. She was inspirational, a superb role model, and an accomplished, dedicated social work pioneer who led the first Foster Grandparent Program in the War on Poverty. Barbara Glaser Congratulations to the new pioneers. Marjorie Brittain Hammock Dr. Bernice Harper is my forever mentor. In life you need a true friend, a confidante, a supporter, a light that shines when things get dark. How lucky can I be that she is all of this to me! Lovingly on the 20th Anniversary of NASW Social Work Pioneers. Martha Duncan Bond Keep on Keeping on! A Never-ending tribute to our Pioneers and in memory of my dear friend Virginia Insley. Beryl Carter Rice Congratulations. Everyone is in my thoughts and prayers. Shirley Jones To Robert Cohen: Bob, I wish I could hear your presentation. I am proud of our Boston University School of Social Work graduate. More than that, I have enjoyed my work with you through various NASW committees over the years. All the best.
