Most of the information on Bython and his descendants was supplied by AllenG. Hamann of Goldsboro, NC in 1985. The following is his introduction: Bython B. Alford Family Bython B. Alford was born about 1817-1820, with the censuses of 1870,1880, 1860 and 1850 each adding a year to his age. Though Bython seems the most prevalent spelling, the 1850 census spells it By than and the 1880 census lists him as Bythan V. He apparently served as a justice of the peace, and was more commonly known simply as "B.B." Alford. An obituary notice in the Raleigh Register says simply that "B.B. Alford d. 14 Jun 1886 at Boon Hill, Johnston Co." There is a Johnston Co. marriage record on 19 Aug 1843 for Bythan Alford and Joanna Barnes, though apparently this was of short duration. Apparently she was the daughter of Jacob Barnes, as evidenced by the land division of Jacob Barnes, dec'd. on the 4th Monday in Sep 1843 (Johnston Co. bk. 1-228), which gave to Simon Aycock, Demsy Grant, Bython Alford and "for benefit of Sarah Barnes, Jacob Barnes and Bethany Barnes, minor heirs." No further record has been located by the editor concerning Joanna (Barnes) Alford. Bython's second wife was Keziah "Eveline" K, though no record of that marriage has been found, nor has her last name been discovered. In several land transactions, she is referred to simply as K.E.K. In the 1850 census, she is called Evaline, in 1860 is Eveline, in 1870 is Kizzie and in 1880 is Keziah C. (which probably should be an E.) On 25 Sep 1848, Bython and Eveline K., wife, sold land to Dr. H. Whitley. Since Bython's oldest daughter was named Keziah C. ("Kizzie"), it would be assumed that she was named after her mother. Kizzie's birthdate was 27 Jul 1847, so presumably Bython and K.Eveline were married around 1846. K. Eveline's death is unknown. Based on census and land records, it appears that Bython and K.Eveline Alford had 9 children, though relatively few grandchildren. Children included Keziah C., William, Apsilla (Appie), Charles Stephen, Sarah E., James B., Della O., Mary Mamie, and Emma S. (see further details following). In a hard to read land transaction of 29 Nov 1869, West Massy and his wife Tabilhia sold land to K.E.K.Alford wife of B.B.; D.C.Alford (who is this? could it possibly mean B.B., since he is not 1
mentioned?), and the other children of B.B. (named in document) except for oldest child Kizzie who was already married, youngest child Emma not yet born, and William, who must have already died young prior to this. William is not in the 1870 census or later ones, nor in the 1892 land division or the 1895 will. On 21 Jan 1892, the land division of the deceased B. B. Alford involved children J.B., Della, Mamie Royals, Kizzie Stevens, Emma and C.S., suggesting that his wife and children William, Apsilla, and Sarah were deceased. Three years later, on 25 Jun 1895, B.B.'s daughter, Mary M. (Alford) Royals made her will, which included her siblings Kizzie, James B. and Della O. Her brother Charles S. had died around 1882, and Emma must have died 1892-95. On 3 Jan 1898, the land allotted to Emma Alford was divided among her sisters Della and Kizzie, brother James B., and Charles' three sons (her nephews). Johanna: Land records suggest the name of her father and siblings Jacob and Bethany Mrs. Simon Aycock,m and Mrs. Demsy Grant. Keziah: Some of the folks enumerated with the family in 1860 suggest the possibility that her maiden name was Ballard. Maybe she was the daughter of Caleb and Mary Ballard.
