Greeting from the President Welcome to the International & European Studies (IES) Program at the University of Tübingen. In times of increasing global interaction, we are faced with challenges which affect almost every region in the world. Thus, it has become crucial for all of us to understand how intercultural dynamics shape the lives of people today. Knowledge about how states cooperate and about how companies do business with each other across borders, for example, can help us to gain valuable insights into globalization processes. Our intensive English-taught shortterm programs in International & European Studies give students from all over the world the chance to study Europe and the European Union as an example of how nations and individuals work together. The University of Tübingen one of Germany s most prestigious universities is located in the heart of Europe, in a region of Southern Germany. It is the perfect setting for students to focus on European politics and history, business, law and culture. In seminars, lectures and excursions, IES students will explore how European institutions have developed and how they are operating today. The University of Tübingen combines a tradition of more than 530 years with internationally renowned state-of-the-art research. About 28,300 students are enrolled at Tübingen. In recent years, both teaching and research at the University have become increasingly international. Numerous student exchanges, research collaborations and partnerships with universities worldwide help us to attract the best students, scientists and scholars from all over the globe. 3 International & European Studies International & European Studies (IES) offers students from all over the world a chance to study Europe and the European Union at the University of Tübingen, one of Germany s universities in the Excellent class. In short-term programs throughout the year students learn about and discuss diverse topics on Europe and the European Union, share their knowledge and experiences, and have the opportunity to get to know the University of Tübingen as an excellent place for study and research. This brochure provides you with information on the different IES short-term programs and will help you to prepare for your stay in Tübingen. We look forward to welcoming you! Your IES-Team In seminars taught in English students will learn a lot of fascinating things about Europe and the EU. You will visit relevant European cities such as Strasbourg and Berlin, meet with European politicians, debate current European affairs, and attend guest lectures by experts. In German language courses and intercultural workshops you will improve your language and intercultural competency skills. Depending on the program you either take a variety of academic introductory or in-depth courses on diverse areas such as EU politics, history, law, international business, and culture: You can participate in the Winter and Summer Programs of four to six weeks or complement and continue your studies by attending the Fall Term Program of three months. Tübingen is the ideal location for this highly effective academic program: Located in Baden-Württemberg, Tübingen is only a few hours from Strasbourg, France, the seat of the European Parliament, and equally close to Frankfurt, the seat of the European Central Bank. Tübingen is a very lively university town with 85,500 inhabitants, 28,300 of them students. Its historic charm and attractive position on the Neckar River offer a high quality of life whether you are studying, working, or taking a break. 4 University of Tübingen. Innovative. Interdisciplinary. International. Since 1477 Founded in 1477, the University of Tübingen is one of Europe s oldest universities. Several hundred years of history in the sciences and humanities have been written here. The latest chapter of the University s history is marked by its success in the German government Excellence Initiative, which placed Tübingen among the country s top universities. The University has a good reputation among international students and academic staff alike and has many partnerships with educational institutions in North and Latin America, Asia, Australia, Africa as well as with all European countries. 5 IES at the University of Tübingen The IES Program offers students from all over the world a short-term study abroad experience throughout the year focusing on the acquisition and deepening of academic knowledge, German language skills and intercultural competence. Since its launch in 2014, the program has worked closely with various disciplines at the Faculty of Humanities, the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences and the Faculty of Law as well as the Department of German as a Foreign Language and Intercultural Programs. The University s teaching staff is dedicated to excellence in teaching. Effective and individual learning is a great strength of the program: classes are small and and individual mentoring is guaranteed at all times.

6 The IES Winter and Summer Programs The IES Winter and Summer Programs of four to six weeks are designed for young international students with an interest in Europe. You study European politics, culture and history in a variety of diverse academic introductory courses, each held by University of Tübingen faculty. Winter and Summer Programs Facts Academic introductory courses Study trips and company visits German language courses (A1-B2) and intercultural workshops For undergraduate students with any kind of academic background 8-12 ECTS Dates Winter Program: January (4 weeks) Summer Program I: June (4 weeks) Summer Program II: July-August (6 weeks) Introductory courses on EU politics, history, international business and law IES seminars reflect the core elements of the European values which constitute the foundations of Europe and the European Union: Peace, the separation of powers, the rule of law, and freedom. Sessions focus on topics such as the history of the EU as a project to ensure peace among European nations, the institutional setup of the European Union today, EU law, and how people do business in Europe. Guest lectures and study trips Through interactive class sessions and guest lectures by renowned University of Tübingen professors and lecturers, company visits, and study trips to European institutions in exciting European cities such as Berlin, Strasbourg and Stuttgart, you have the opportunity to explore, further investigate, and discuss the basic European principles that have shaped the complex process of European integration for more than 60 years. I found this to be one of the most enjoyable experiences of my life. I learnt so much more about the EU and about other cultures. 7 The IES Fall Term Program The three-month IES Fall Term Program offers advanced international undergraduate students the chance to broaden their academic horizons and deepen their knowledge of diverse fields such as European Union politics and history, law, international business and European literature and culture. In-depth courses on EU politics, history, international business, law and culture You study Europe in diverse academic classes, designed for interested students who already have a basic understanding (in some) of the aforementioned fields. Sessions focus on the historical yet very complex process of European integration, which has resulted in a steadily growing group of nations working together to face political, legal, economic, and cultural challenges in Europe. As this program overlaps with the current academic year at the University of Tübingen, you will be able to experience student life in Tübingen as well. Fall Term Program Facts Academic in-depth courses Study trips and company visits German language courses (A1-B2) and intercultural workshops For advanced undergraduate and graduate students from the humanities, economics, social sciences and law 24-30 ECTS Dates Fall Term Program: September-December (3 months) The program offers the perfect chance of deepening your knowledge of Germany and Europe, and it gives you diverse opportunities to apply your knowledge to the real world! By debating, exploring other cultures, cooperating with all the lovely students, I could develop myself more than I could do by myself. Workshops, guest lectures and study trips Each course is held by a different lecturer of the University of Tübingen and brings together our international guest students and Tübingen based students eager to study Europe in English. Class sessions are interactive and complemented by workshops, guest lectures by renowned Tübingen University staff, company visits, and study trips to European Union institutions in exciting European cities such as Berlin, Strasbourg, Amsterdam/The Hague and Stuttgart. Furthermore, the IES Fall Term Program serves as an opportunity for international students interested in further studies at the University of Tübingen at the M.A. or even PhD level. 8 Study trips Strasbourg Visit the only supranational and democratically elected parliament of the world: The European Parliament. Stroll through the picturesque old city center with its breathtaking cathedral, and enjoy the delicious cuisine of the Alsace region. Berlin Enjoy one of Europe s most vibrant metropoles buzzing with life, culture and arts, discuss current issues with a member of the German parliament at the Bundestag, visit museums and galleries, and get the opportunity to experience history in Germany s capital. Amsterdam/The Hague Discover two Dutch cities full of European history, traditions and culture, visit the Anne Frank House and museums which are renowned all around the word, and learn more about the legal foundations of Europe and Human Rights. Stuttgart Experience one of Europe s most innovative and economically successful cities/ regions, visit the impressive Mercedes Benz Museum, its cars and architecture, and don t miss the opportunity to try more of the outstanding Swabian food. Company visits Company visits like Daimler and Ritter Sport will allow you to get to know influential companies in the economically strong region of Baden-Württemberg. You will gain insights into different fields of work and have the chance to learn more about internship and working opportunities. Social activities The IES programs offer you multiple opportunities to experience German culture in various social activities such as an intercultural evening, museum visits and trips to sights in the region. In summer you can join a tour on the Neckar River on one of Tübingen s famous punts. A perfect chance to explore Tübingen and its surroundings and to get to know your classmates and Tübingen students ( buddies ) better. Leila, Iran

9 Buddy Program The buddy program made the stay more comfortable being in a new country. The interactions between the participants as well as between the participants and buddies allowed us to learn more about different cultures even when outside of class. Tristan, Australia Farewell fun Within the Buddy Program students of the University of Tübingen accompany the IES participants and help them to make their stay as smooth as possible. Your Buddy will help you to prepare your stay in Tübingen and support you after your arrival and during your entire stay in Tübingen. The Buddy Program aims at initiating an intercultural exchange between international and Tübingen students and will allow the IES students to get to know German student life first-hand and to make friends. Together you can spend your leisure time or take part in events offered by the IES Program. 10 Program Information Admission The IES programs are designed for (advanced) undergraduate and graduate students. Participants must be at least 18 years old and must have a very good command of English to be able to follow the academic courses and participate in discussions. Credits & Grades The University of Tübingen applies the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS). The ECTS is a system for international recognition of academic achievements and transfer of study credits. At the University of Tübingen 1 ECTS equals a workload of 30 hours (regular presence and active participation in the courses, private and independent study, preparation of presentations and examinations). Each course in the program concludes with a written exam. The grade of each course will be calculated by the result of the written exam and active participation in class. Excellent program. Jahdiel, USA Certificate & Transcript After successful completion of all requirements students will receive a certificate of attendance and a transcript of records which shows the course titles, contact hours, the grading and ECTS credits earned. The certificate of attendance will be awarded on the last day of the program. The transcript of records will be sent within 4 weeks after the end of the program via postal mail. Fees & Expenses The program fee depends on the program and includes all courses and workshops, course materials, study trips, accommodation, a public transportation ticket for use within Tübingen as well as a welcome and a graduation reception. The following additional expenses are not covered by the program fee: flight and travel to/from Tübingen, visa fees, health insurance, meals and beverages, and some of the optional social activities. 11 Practical Information SAFETY Tübingen is a safe university town and the ideal location for a short-term abroad stay in Germany. The IES-Team makes every effort to guarantee a high standard of safety in all activities of the program. HEALTH INSURANCE It is very important that you have an international health insurance to cover any medical expenses. The health insurance must be valid in Europe and apply immediately when you arrive in Germany. HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO LIVE IN GERMANY? The estimated average monthly expenses for meals and drinks are 150-200 EUR (depending on whether you eat out or cook). The average price for lunch in the student canteen is 2.95 EUR. More information on the cost of living in Germany is provided by the DAAD (www.daad.de/en). WHICH CLOTHES TO BRING? In winter you should bring a warm jacket, hat, scarf, gloves, warm sweaters and waterproof shoes. In summer it is recommended to bring clothes for warm temperatures as well as pants, sweaters, and closed shoes. In all programs it is advisable to bring comfortable shoes and sport clothes. WHAT ELSE TO PACK? You should bring towels, an adaptor for your electronic devices, a laptop with Wi-Fi (recommended), a dictionary, rain protection, and special medication if needed. Moreover, you will have the chance to present your culture during the program, so you can bring along something typical from your home country. PASSPORT Please bring your passport and other travel documents such as a visa. We recommend that you make a copy of the travel documents and keep it separate from the original. INTERNET There is free internet access in your accommodation as well as on campus. VISA Whether you need a visa for your stay in Germany depends on your citizenship. Please contact the nearest German embassy in your home country as early as possible about visa requirements.
