Family Checklist Notify your family attorney, financial advisor or CPA of your loved ones death. Identify who is to serve as the Executor or Personal Representative. Find a trusted person to assist in making decisions and tracking estate related items. Remove loved one from bank accounts and safety deposit boxes and add another person.* Inquire of an attorney or county office about filing the will for probate if needed.* Notify Social Security and apply for possible death benefit ($255.00) and benefits for dependent children (if applicable.) Remove loved one from residential property deeds, rural property and out of state property. Consider adding other names for estate planning.* Remove loved one from titles on automobiles and add T.O.D. if applicable.* Transfer car insurance into your name so it is valid. Change or add names to stocks, bonds or other investments.* Create an asset list for estate purposes. Change designation of cemetery property owned by deceased. Cancel any credit cards for deceased and consult with your attorney before paying any outstanding balances.* Change utility and credit card billing information to update records to reflect your credit information. Watch all incoming statements/invoices to make sure they are valid. (Some companies run scam operations with false statements saying that your loved one paid an amount down and a balance is due. Verify before payment.) Notify employer about death and ask about benefits or pension. Replace loved one from beneficiary status on other life insurance policies and check for old or lost policies. Cancel medical coverage policies on deceased. Obtain multiple certified death certificates. Inquire if you may have them back of if they will accept a regular photo copy (not certified) Check with your attorney or financial advisor about updating your personal estate planning information. * Contact legal advisor before making changes. * Most changes in legal documents will require a certified death certificate.

Estate Executor s Duties During the Probate Process READS YOUR WILL Expedites your burial instructions. ADMINISTERS YOUR ESTATE Governed by the wishes expressed in your Will, the requirements of your estate, and the local probate law. Gives special study to valuable collections; determines method and time of sale for articles not bequeathed; makes a careful estimate of amount of cash to be raised for payment of taxes, legacies, and expenses of administration and of prob- Gives exhaustive study to your business interests and determines policy of continuance, liquidation, or sale with due regard to expressions in your Will. Ascertains and pays inheritance tax in state of residence; obtains waivers for transfer of securities. Arranges for necessary proceedings to release securities of property located in other states. Makes careful survey of all possible tax claims to see that no further liability exists upon review by the government. SETTLES ALL PROPER CLAIMS Publishes notice to creditors; obtains all available evidence regarding propriety of each claim filed, resists all improper claims; pays out of estate funds all approved and allowed claims. Files preliminary notice, prepares return, and pays both State Inheritance and Federal Estate Tax. DISTRIBUTES YOUR PROBATE ESTATE Prepares data for final account showing in detail all receipts and disbursements; notifies interested persons of hearing on account, after settlement of account by court, distributes remaining property of your estate as directed by court. OBTAINS FINAL DISCHARGE After final payment and distribution to legatees and devisees, secures final discharge as an executor.

f Executor's Checklist PRELIMINARY STEPS Retain and meet with estate attorney to complete application f or probate. Make provisions for any fees that may be applicable. Prepare list of assets and liabilities. List assets by class, their value and full particulars thereof including certificate number, registration particulars, maturity date, interest rate, payment frequency and dates. Open an estate bank account. Determine immediate cash requirements of family. List contents of safety deposit box. Arrange for safe custody of personal valuables. Review adequacy of property insurance coverage and alter if necessary. If deceased lived in a rental property, terminate lease or arrange sublet. Cancel health coverage. Cancel driver's license, magazine and newspapers, utilities and club memberships. Confirm outstanding bank balances and cancel credit cards. Complete or cancel outstanding broker's orders. Ascertain assets and liabilities by writing to financial institutions, insurance companies, brokers, employers. Obtain prior year's tax returns. Locate and obtain title documents for real estate, mortgages, bonds, debentures and guaranteed investments certificates. Arrange evaluations of real estates, securities, personal property and automobiles. Arrange for review of the investment portfolio.

Information Summary Banking Information Make a prompt request for release from each bank or financial institution in which the deceased and you held a joint account. This is necessary before you can withdraw funds from the account. The bank will tell you what forms you may need to sign. Titles, Deeds, and Registrations Before you change the deed on property and remove the deceased's name, with local officials where the property is located. You'll need a copy of the Death Certificate for this process. The same is true for changing titles and registrations on vehicles. check Bills and Credit Obligations Do a thorough job gathering outstanding bills and credit obligations, like credit cards, car and bank loans. In some cases with installment loans and credit cards, you may be covered by credit life insurance which will pay off the account balance in the event of death. Insurance Review With the passing of a spouse or significant other, your insurance needs may change. You don't want to be underinsured or over insured.
