Acknowledgments The basis of this volume is a workshop-conference that took place at Oslo University in summer 2011. The participants were members of the Collaborative Research Center Ritual Dynamics (SFB 619), members of the project project Religion on Stage: Traditional South Asian Performances in New Public Spheres and Media of the Cluster of Excellence Asia and Europe in a Global Context The Dynamics of Transculturality (both projects at Heidelberg University), and members of the Oslo project on Ritual traditions in Kanchipuram. Moreover, we invited a number of renowned and young specialists in the field to join us in our common endeavor. The 2011 Oslo workshop built in form and content on another workshop on festivals held in October 2009 at the University of Oslo. While the first workshop Perspectives on Festivity opened the scene with case studies from all over the world, the 2011 workshop South Asian Festivals on the Move focused on festivals in South Asian traditions, taking place in India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Germany. The editors wish to express their gratitude for the generous financial support by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, the Sonderforschungsbereich 619 Ritual Dynamics at Heidelberg University, the Cluster of Excellence Asia and Europe in a Global Context: The Dynamics of Transculturality at Heidelberg University, the Department of Culture Studies and Oriental Languages (IKOS) at Oslo University, and the research network PluRel (Religion in Pluralist Societies) at Oslo University. We moreover want to thank Eva Kahlmann and Quoc-Bao Do for their invaluable help with preparing the manuscript and the index.
