Rothelowman is a leading Australian architecture and interior design firm that specialises in the design of major mixed-use, commercial, residential, hospitality and retail projects. With offices in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane, Rothelowman employs many of Australia s best architects, interior designers, urban designers and planning specialists to work on projects throughout Australia and Asia. Every building designed by Rothelowman responds uniquely to client needs, the site potential and the natural and urban environment. Rothelowman designs buildings that support the lifestyle of its inhabitants; they are striking, functional, sustainable and make lasting contributions to communities and cities. Established in 1991, Rothelowman is led by respected architects and industry specialists, Shane Rothe, Kim Lowman, Nigel Hobart, Michael Banak, Jeff vbrown, Chris Hayton, Stuart Marsland and Ben Pomroy. 07
Culture As a national practice with over 140 professionals, our team collaborates across all three states. Our internal culture is positive and progressive focused on learning and evolving as a collective. Mentoring and training also ensures ongoing professional development. Celebrating with mid-year and end-of-year events, our studios also coordinate in-house initiatives such as our art competition Get off Your Art, Go-karting, Ping-Pong Tournaments, our Bake Off competition, and our ArchiSoccer team which has been established since the programs inception. Training Full-time employees are provided with a training allowance to help support their professional development. Training is encouraged in fields relating to their role within the practice. Innovation Convertible Spaces Movable joinery that increase living space by 70% Individual buildings tend to be part of a much larger system and the broader context needs to be understood in order to respond intelligently and effectively. At the core of Rothelowman s approach is the belief that sustainable design is multi-faceted and should consider social and economic viability as well as environmental factors. To ensure sustainability measures are properly considered, Rothelowman projects are evaluated during the design and documentation phases by a specialist in-house team. In addition to internal reviews, the firm supports the assessment of projects with industry rating tools and is fully conversant with the methodologies that the various assessment tools require. Rothelowman works closely with clients and specialist consultants to define benchmarks for the environmental performance of projects, ensuring sustainability objectives remain achievable and consistent with other stated project parameters. Accredited by the National Centre for Sustainability, Rothelowman is also a member of the Green Building Council of Australia. As architects, urban planners and interior designers, we have a responsibility to pro-actively uphold the integrity of our social, economic and environmental contexts. Principals Kim Lowman Founding Principal Director Shane Rothe Founding Principal Director Nigel Hobart Managing Principal As well as being involved in the firm s architectural design and development processes, Kim is a driving force behind Rothelowman s reputation for outstanding client service. Kim understands that a clear and concise understanding of property is vital to achieving architectural integrity, excellence and project endurance. Kim obtained his architecture degree from the University of Melbourne and completed a Graduate Diploma in Property from RMIT. Along with fellow University of Melbourne architecture graduate, Shane Rothe the pair established Rothelowman in 1991. Born and raised in Hong Kong, Kim has more than 20 years experience designing multiresidential, mixed use and commercial projects throughout Australia and the Asian region. As a founding partner and managing principal of the firm, Shane continues to be heavily involved in all aspects of the architectural design and production process. Reflecting upon the journey of the business, Rothelowman consistently inspires and drives Shane to accomplish excellence in architecture. Shane finds witnessing his clients problems become solutions, watching those solutions develop, provide enjoyment and stand the test of time, extremely rewarding and personally satisfying Shane is immensely proud of the breadth, success and quality of the practice. He feels even prouder that as Rothelowman s client list continues to grow, so too does Rothelowman s contribution to the evolution and appearance of the community s built environments and interior spaces. As Managing Principal, Nigel is primarily responsible for leading the business side of the practice to ensure seamless service delivery for all clients. Prior to joining the firm in 2007, Nigel was a client of Rothelowman for almost four years. This client-side perspective that Nigel brings to the practice gives him a unique, direct insight into client needs and expectations. Nigel is based in the Melbourne studio and regularly spends time with clients and Rothelowman team members in Sydney and Brisbane. Nigel has a Bachelor of Economics and MBA from the University of Queensland. With over 20 years of experience in construction funding, project marketing and general business management, Nigel has the skills and motivation to help clients achieve their project goals. 32 Rothelowman 2016
Michael Banak Principal NSW and ACT Jeff Brown Principal QLD Ben Pomroy Principal NSW and ACT Chris Hayton Principal VIC Stuart Marsland Principal VIC With 20 years experience designing both local and international projects, Michael brings his enviable experience Rothelowman s national leadership team as a Principal in the NSW/ ACT studio. A Green Star accredited professional and a member of the Green Building Council of Australia, Michael uses his extensive knowledge of workplace design to further expand the firm s commercial office division with agile, technologically intelligent and sustainable solutions. As well as design expertise, Michael is dedicated to leading industry change as a signatory to the Male Champions of Change Charter through the Australian Institute of Architects (NSW Chapter). He also participated in the Australian Institute of Architects mentoring program and has developed a specific approach to engaging a millennial workforce. Michael s commitment to sustainability, forwardthinking design and mentorship complement Rothelowman s well-established and skilled teams across Australia Based in the QLD studio Jeff brings a broad range of architectural experience from projects worked on in the Australia and the UK. In his role as Principal, Jeff is equally proficient designing individual luxury homes as he is mixed-used residential and commercial buildings. Jeff is particularly experienced project directing and leading design teams on major masterplanning and feasibility studies for private sector developers and government clients. Jeff places particular emphasis on maintaining involvement in all project work, from inception through to completion. His skills base and innovative approach to providing workable solutions to all levels of design ensure a clearly defined and communicable vision for all projects. Ben brings deep experience across multiple project types including residential, retail, mixed use, and integrated transport. Having worked extensively across all project stages, Ben has honed his skills as an allround architect. His concept design skills have been refined through the application of knowledge gained through project documentation and construction management. Aside from technical skills, Ben s focus is on interrogating each project s brief and client s business so that the right solution for their needs can be found. He takes the role of trusted advisor seriously. He appreciates the complexities of construction and the importance of successful project delivery to tight budgets and deadlines. Ben relishes the opportunities presented by new 3D technologies and their capacity to enhance communication in the design process and their ability to maximise the quality of built outcomes. Our People As a Principal Chris is responsible for design direction, Urban Design and ESD across the practice. Committed to the advancement of the quality of the built environment he believes good design is founded on an intelligent response to context, building programme, user needs and an effective response to environmental issues. Subsequent to graduating from the University of Edinburgh Chris has 20 years experience working on major projects in Australia and Europe. Fully conversant with all aspects of architectural practice he is a highly regarded designer with a reputation for balancing the many demands of large scale, complex projects. An advocate for high quality medium and high density housing, he has been heavily involved in the successful design of a number of high profile residential projects, and believes strongly in the integration of new developments with their wider context. In his role as Principal, Stuart constantly pushes the boundaries in design and detailing, creating cleaner, more efficient, rigorous and elegant solutions on challenging sites. Stuart s passion for high quality dense urban design was born out of training at the Metropolitan University of Manchester in the UK, just as the city was going through its postindustrial regeneration. Prior to joining the practice in 2006, Stuart worked in London on large commercial and residential projects where clients included the London Underground. Throughout this period, Stuart created innovative designs and expanded sites, maximising their yield. 33
During her two years post graduate experience at Rothelowman Ellie has been exposed to a diverse range of projects varying in scale, program and site condition. Ellie Kirk Graduate Architect Working as a student architect for a year between my Bachelor and Masters became fundamental in understanding the practical evolution of large-scale projects, as well as developing a strong skill set in the appropriate software. Rothelowman is a diverse design practice, and with collaboration across three states I am constantly exposed to innovative and interesting approaches within design and construction. I returned to my Master of Architecture with a deeper appreciation for the built form and now as a Graduate Architect in the Melbourne studio I feel confident and supported with my registration goals. An experienced Architect and Associate, Damian uses strong communication to collaborate with colleagues, clients and consultants to drive projects from inception to completion. Damian Butler Associate Damian prides himself on excellent client service and helping deliver contextually relevant projects with design integrity. His project experience includes residential developments of varying scales and budgets, as well as commercial office buildings. Ranging from concept initiation and Feasibility studies through to construction Documentation, his experience allows him to work seamlessly across all aspects of any project. By establishing positive working relationships with his consultant teams, Damian is able to ensure the design intent is realized to its fullest. Our People 35
